00:00It's a recap of game number two of the 2024 Stanley Cup Final.
00:04So it's not just Ben.
00:05It's not just Donnie.
00:07Joe Maddon joins us live right here on this Tuesday
00:10on the Early Line on Sports Grid.
00:12Joe, thank you so much for taking the time to be here
00:14on this Tuesday.
00:16A recap of game number two,
00:18the Panthers up two games to none in the Stanley Cup Final.
00:22And so we project what the rest of this series might hold.
00:26Thanks for being here on this Tuesday.
00:29Yeah, absolutely.
00:30Thanks guys for having me on that game last night.
00:34It was fantastic.
00:35If you're a Panthers fan and if you're an Oilers fan,
00:38man, you've got to be waking up with a bad feeling this
00:40morning.
00:42Yeah, it hasn't been great for Edmonton.
00:45They lose each of the first two games by a total of six
00:48goals combined.
00:50Three nothing in game one.
00:52Sergei Bobrovsky was fantastic.
00:54The man noticed Bob not bad yesterday and it was tied
00:58entering the third period and Edmonton actually scored
01:01first the only goal in the opening period and then Evan
01:04Rodriguez scored twice for Florida to start to pull the
01:08Panthers away as they win game number two, four to one.
01:13Joe, what was the difference last night to give the Panthers
01:16another commanding win and a commanding 2-0 series advantage?
01:20Yeah, the difference really was Ben that the rest of the
01:23Panthers showed up not just Bobrovsky because when we looked
01:27at that first game Bobrovsky stole them that game offensively
01:30and defensively that team just wasn't there even though you
01:33saw a box score of three to nothing.
01:36That was Bobrovsky's win in game one and looking at game
01:39two the way the defense was able to come out and lock down
01:44all of the players of the Edmonton Oilers in that first
01:47and second period this team these teams were not able to get
01:51those shots on goal.
01:52The Edmonton Oilers were completely limited out there on
01:55the ice.
01:56Everyone really thought Connor McDavid would come out flying
01:59last night and he was only able to record three shots on goal.
02:03The Panthers ability on the defensive side to really a limit
02:06the Edmonton Oilers was absolutely fantastic offensively.
02:10This team showed up hard hitting a physical game out there
02:13last night.
02:14And at the end of the day, the Florida Panthers played their
02:17game.
02:17They got Edmonton to play their game and they solidified that
02:20win.
02:22I'll tell you what was good about last night's game, which
02:24you watched yesterday.
02:25I tweeted out said, you know what relaxing from RBI props.
02:27I want to take a look at my Oilers play some hockey and
02:30apparently not on the only one here 43% ratings increase this
02:34year for the Stanley Cup final.
02:35So they have our attention.
02:36There's plenty of superstars.
02:37We'll see how long this can go.
02:39But my question on this show is you have a two to nothing
02:41series lead by Florida.
02:42That's more than they could ask for.
02:44They love that going back to Edmonton.
02:46But also can you speak on maybe Barkov getting injured late
02:49in that game and what that could possibly mean to the series
02:51if he's out for an extended period of time.
02:54Donnie, this could be major trouble for the Florida Panthers
02:57out there.
02:57Barkov is one of the best two-way players out there on
03:00the ice and him going out with that hit from Leon dry side
03:03of last night where I'm known.
03:05We don't know when he's going to hit the ice.
03:07There's a lot of time in between game 2 and game 3 with
03:11game 3 on Thursday.
03:13That was an absolutely nasty hit from the look of it to
03:16myself.
03:16It looked like an elbow straight to the jaw and we'll see
03:19how his jaw is doing.
03:20We know players will play through a lot but a dislocated
03:24or broken jaw out there.
03:25I really can't see him playing if it is broken, which honestly
03:30that will be a huge difference and I do think Edmonton will
03:32be able to pick up a win without Barkov on the ice in game
03:35three.
03:36He's all over Connor McDavid out there.
03:39And like I said, he plays both sides of the pot.
03:41He's absolutely fantastic and he's a huge difference maker
03:45for the Florida Panthers.
03:46So the Panthers without him will absolutely have their hands
03:49full and I could see Edmonton taking game 3 if that's the
03:51case.
03:53Yeah, Joe, you detailed for us in previewing this series and
03:56one of the key matchup advantages is the style of hockey
03:59that Florida plays incredibly physical for the Panthers last
04:02night though.
04:03It was the veteran Evan Rodriguez netting two goals to start
04:06off the third that really pulled the Panthers away and said
04:10good night to the Oilers for that 4-1 victory, but not just
04:15Evan Rodriguez, not just the four goals scored yesterday by
04:18Florida Sergei Bobrovsky has been sensational once again,
04:23Bob 32 saves a perfect clean sheet in game number one last
04:29night only face 19 shots, but did save 18 of the 19 and now
04:34with Florida up to oh as we head to Edmonton for game number
04:38three on Thursday and the Panthers a hefty favorite to win
04:42Lord Stanley's Cup Sergei Bobrovsky in odds on favorite to
04:46win the cons might the playoff or Stanley Cup final MVP.
04:51Joe.
04:51Do you believe that Bobrovsky is worthy of a minus money
04:54price? And if not, who else would you might take a flyer
04:57on? You know what?
04:59When I look at Bobrovsky, absolutely.
05:01He's been able to get to shut out so far in the playoffs
05:04and who's to say he won't get a third out there on the ice.
05:07These defenses have been phenomenally strong in front of
05:11him for the Florida Panthers.
05:12And I do think that Bobrovsky he deserves it if they're
05:16able to get there.
05:17He's been able to hang in all of these playoff games.
05:21He's only had one really bad one out there where you kind
05:23of go.
05:24How did Bobrovsky let that in but that goal last night that
05:27the Edmonton Oilers scored on him in that first period was
05:30right through his five hole.
05:31That's something we're normally not seeing Bobrovsky is so
05:34strong at protecting that five hole.
05:36I absolutely think he deserves it and that note on Rodriguez
05:40being able to get the two goals.
05:41Ben, do you realize that was on two shots on goal only that
05:44he was able to get so absolute fire last night.
05:49Yeah, we're taking a look at those cons my thoughts and
05:50also yes, you read about that questionable goal that Bobrovsky
05:53gave up and also it's a perfect game plan for Edmonton.
05:55You wanted to get that breakthrough goal here on the road
05:58to go up one to nothing and then four unanswered goals here
06:00by Florida.
06:01We'll see how it plays out with the cons my trophy.
06:03But if you're Edmonton, you need some of your big guns to
06:06start firing here to get you back into that series.
06:08So if we take a look Joe at the updated series prices here
06:11Florida's a heavy favorites.
06:12No surprise a minus 500 price to win the series.
06:15If you're still digging Edmonton, you can get a plus 375.
06:18If we take a look at the spread the series Florida minus
06:20two and a half games Edmonton plus two and a half games any
06:23one of those is it just so simple that Florida should win
06:26this series or is there some buyback opportunities here for
06:29the Oilers Joe?
06:30You know what if you have hope that the Edmonton Oilers can
06:34get another win here.
06:35You're getting the value right now.
06:36We don't know what's happening with Barkov.
06:38So I do think grabbing them plus the 360, especially if
06:42you already took the Florida Panthers to win at all before
06:46this series kicked off.
06:47You've got a nice hedging position here.
06:49I do think though Florida is going to win this.
06:52I'm really hoping they're able Edmonton is able to push it
06:55deep at least we want a nice competitive Stanley Cup finals.
06:59We don't want to see the sweep at least I don't even though
07:02I'm riding with the Florida Panthers.
07:04I do think it'd be nice to see Edmonton stay competitive
07:07in this one.
07:08But at the end of the day you guys you've lost all the value
07:10on the Florida Panthers unless you got them before this series
07:13kicked off.
07:15Yeah, Joe.
07:15We see the same thing in the NBA finals with Boston up 2-0
07:19and Florida up 2-0 both teams had home floor and home ice
07:23advantage.
07:24So it's not crazy to see that team.
07:26Take that commanding 2-0 series lead, but in two series, we
07:30expected to be competitive to see at least six games, maybe
07:33even go the full duration of seven.
07:36It does feel a little bit fleeting where now the team that
07:39is booked as the underdog has to win four of the next five
07:42games.
07:43If they are going to end a champion where it seems the Celtics
07:47and the Panthers certainly in line to hoist that title, but
07:51maybe it gets competitive Joe.
07:53How many more games do we see here in the 2024 Stanley Cup
07:56final?
07:57We got to get you to game six at Rogers Place.
08:00We've got to get to game six, but I've got a gut feeling
08:03sinking gut feeling this only goes to five.
08:05That's coming in at plus 235 Edmonton.
08:08It's such a hard place to play in and you've heard Connor
08:11McDavid say I can't wait for everyone to doubt us again.
08:15He's going to be fired up.
08:16So look for the best out of Connor McDavid here in game
08:19three, but Edmonton will collapse if they're not able to
08:21win game three.
08:22This team will fall apart out there on their ice.
08:25Their fans are absolutely brutal.
08:27The booing that will come at home if they lose that game
08:30three, it's going to be nasty you guys.
08:32So for Edmonton's sake, I hope they're able to get the win
08:36in game three there.
08:37Less than a couple of days off before game three in the
08:40change of venue.
08:41It's a long trip from Sunrise, Florida all the way up to
08:44Edmonton, Alberta and game three is on Thursday.
08:48Edmonton is booked as a home ice favorite at minus 135.
08:53Joe, as always, thank you for the sensational breakdown
08:56for the Stanley Cup final.
08:57We appreciate the time.
08:59Thanks you guys.
09:00Appreciate you having me on.
