The Cyber and Social Media Unit of the TTPS confirms that it has been receiving calls from members of the public, mainly men, in relation to the 'Is this your man?' Facebook page. Meantime, at least two men have come forward to tell their side of the story. Rynessa Cutting has more.
Transcript
00:00 On May 14th, the "Is This Your Man" Facebook page was created. The page has since racked up a whopping
00:07 55,000 followers with more than 100 men posted on the page
00:11 allegedly by women who they are said to be entertaining.
00:15 Now while the Bacchanal could be entertaining at times, the fact is these are real people, real
00:22 relationships and real lives. So it's hardly a laughing matter.
00:27 I'm here with one of the men who was posted on the page and he has come to share his side of the story.
00:33 Tell me about your experience. Well on my side the experience
00:38 to me it was
00:41 wasn't a nice one.
00:43 In terms of a lot of the information posted was fabricated. There was no substance
00:49 said.
00:53 Mr. X tells TV6 he knows who sent his name and photo to the page and
00:57 claims it was done out of pure spite and malice. As he says he was involved with a woman many years ago.
01:05 But he says to his dismay when he started commenting on the post the administrator restricted him.
01:11 A female goes sending some information
01:13 or just read a few lines with a picture or the man or they will never call the other person and say hey
01:21 look so making this
01:23 accusation on here. Do you have anything recent or anything to negate it or are you really pursuing this person before we highlight it or
01:30 whatever the nothing. They put a picture, they put a story and
01:34 you cannot message them.
01:37 You cannot defend yourself. You cannot send any information contacting well alright I was talking to this person
01:43 but like that was six years ago. You making it sound like it's yesterday. With the fairness in that
01:48 and saying that they call and say they're doing the Lord's work.
01:51 Me know God does work so.
01:54 Mr. X is also calling on members of the public to be wise. As he points out the intent of the admin may not be
02:01 as claimed.
02:03 You can try to reach a certain amount of people. When they ask for donation they could have nice because you ask them for PayPal,
02:07 $10, US, any amount they could send. So if you have almost 60,000 followers everybody send $60,000 a month.
02:14 For what? At the expense of good men character.
02:18 Meantime one man who has generated much attention on the page with multiple women sharing stories about him
02:25 says now that everything has gone public he is reflecting on some of his actions.
02:31 I understand some of these girls are hurt and
02:34 you know people can be as soon as they find a channel to vent they will do so but this is actually
02:43 defaming somebody because this is done on a large scale.
02:47 Right now my work is being affected by this. But he believes all parties should take accountability.
02:55 It's not like I drugged anybody or
02:58 force anybody. This is free will and I mean
03:03 some of them is saying oh we see the red flag, but you saw the red flag where you're still running in.
03:13 If you understand I saw the red flag yes
03:16 it was this and it was that and I saw this and I saw that but you're still running in.
03:20 So that mean what they are damaged too? I don't know maybe I'm damaged in a kind of way. I don't know.
03:26 All the way is going through things.
03:28 Meantime the cyber and social media unit of the TTPS says
03:32 members of the public mainly men have been reaching out in the hopes of getting redress.
03:38 Both the persons whose things were put up as well as
03:43 probably their significant other or some relative to the person also.
03:47 That you know they also feel the
03:50 distress that this page is causing to them.
03:53 But it's more men.
03:56 We are also aware too that a
03:58 female page has you know been created
04:02 similar to the male page.
04:04 Sergeant Walker laments that many people are distressed by the activity but says there's little the police can do at this time.
04:12 He's advising that affected parties seek the advice of a lawyer.
04:16 The situation with this it's not really
04:20 per se a criminal offense that is taking place.
04:25 This situation would more fall under
04:28 what you call defamation or character which is a civil offense and not a criminal offense and
04:36 thus will not really require any police involvement or inquiry.
04:42 However, we are paying attention to
04:44 this particular page
04:47 because of the mere fact of the cause and the indication that you know it causing some
04:53 distress. What we have been advising persons is that if they
04:59 see their image or some post about them and they know it not to be true
05:05 they can reach out to Facebook to matter and make reports of you know violations
05:12 or what they believe might be violations of
05:15 Facebook's community guidelines.
