00:00Fortunately for me, Jacob, I was watching coverage of the NFL draft and what I found
00:10amazing in the coverage was I rarely see analysts, you know, listen, I'm guilty of it as well,
00:17getting stunned by things.
00:18I rarely see analysts have nothing to say in the moment, like nobody had an answer.
00:24Nobody could understand what they were doing.
00:26So we all just assume that the draft would progress, the Falcons would talk, and we'd
00:32hear about a trade or we'd hear about an injury or we'd hear about just something that made
00:37this make sense.
00:38Jacob, we got nothing.
00:40This is where we're at.
00:41They believe in Penix.
00:42They want him to be their guy.
00:44What gives here?
00:45What do you make of this whole situation?
00:48I don't know what to make of the situation and the fact that they signed Kirk Cousins
00:51and drafted Penix.
00:53It's very strange.
00:54I think you look at it and you say, Kirk Cousins is a 36-year-old quarterback and he's coming
00:58off a torn Achilles.
01:00So under normal circumstances, you'd say, all right, well, it makes sense for them to
01:03draft the young quarterback to kind of develop behind him in case, you know, he doesn't reach
01:08that same peak.
01:09But doing it at number eight, that was stunning.
01:12And I love Michael Penix Jr., the player, and I actually think he's an excellent fit
01:16in Atlanta because Atlanta's offense is built up with a great offensive line.
01:21There are plenty of weapons that allow him to succeed there.
01:24So I think that if you're talking about building a franchise for the future and beyond, which
01:28is something I think Arthur Blank would like to do, he likes having stability.
01:32He likes having succession plans in place.
01:35They didn't have that for Matt Ryan, and I think he kind of looked at that and said,
01:38we can't have that again with Kirk Cousins in case he regresses as a veteran.
01:42So I think that's what they're thinking.
01:44But still, taking a quarterback at number eight after paying Kirk Cousins that massive
01:49four-year contract with $100 million guaranteed, it was shocking.
01:54It's the most shocking NFL draft pick I think I've ever seen.
01:57And the only thing I think that could potentially rival it from a draft standpoint is when Anthony
02:01Bennett went number one in the NBA draft about a decade ago.
02:05Bill Simmons's reaction to that stands out to me to this day, and I think a lot of NFL
02:10analysts had that kind of moment last night.
