Transcript
00:00 According to the General Secretary of the Public Services Association,
00:04 Kellen Wallace, the problems at the MIC Institute of Technology in Makoya are many,
00:09 based on complaints from members of staff which came to the trade union in writing.
00:14 The centre being hampered by the lack of a senior instructor,
00:17 the lack of a designated classroom for training effectively,
00:22 the lack of promotions for staff,
00:24 the timely procurement of tools and materials for training,
00:28 the refurbishment of staff room to boost staff morale,
00:32 the timely appraisal and outstanding appraisals for staff,
00:36 the shortage of staff at the centre,
00:39 and we have now suspended again a senior instructor,
00:42 and the delays in the centre with regards to meeting and addressing critical issues.
00:48 The PSA, pointing to the collective agreement,
00:51 is calling on MIC Makoya to move with haste in its investigation of a senior instructor
00:57 who has been on suspension with pay since February 8.
01:00 Collective agreement says this whole thing is supposed to be looked at,
01:04 be dealt with and investigated within a period of 30 days.
01:07 And it didn't say working days, it says 30 days, which is a normal calendar month.
01:11 Wallace claims that apart from a highly inconvenient transfer
01:16 from the Sandy Grandi Centre to Omera,
01:18 the chairman of the PSA MIC section committee was recently on suspension without pay for two weeks.
01:25 We see this as an attack not only on the association,
01:29 but one attack in the head to keep the workers in line.
01:33 He tells us that MIC Makoya has finally agreed to meet with its employees this Friday.
01:40 But the PSA says that promotions are a problem across the board at MIC institutions.
01:45 According to Wallace,
01:46 there are instances where certain people have been promoted twice in one year or one period.
01:52 Well, some say five times while others haven't received a promotion in 10 and 15 years plus.
01:57 See, the only time your salary changes is when there's overall negotiations or you are promoted.
02:03 And we are seeing that promotion being used as a ways and means of elevating friends and families.
02:11 That apart, Wallace states that workers are still on 2014 salaries.
02:16 And while negotiations for non-cost items are nearly completed,
02:20 it's not the same for cost items.
02:22 If anything that deals with money, the management is unable to speak on
02:27 because they have not been given the go ahead by the government to do so.
02:32 Yet we have the proliferation of the 4% throughout the other state sectors.
02:39 The PSA is calling on the government to assist in getting that part of the process started.
