00:00 From Frankston mum to federal MP, Jodie Bellier is the latest addition to Anthony Albanese's
00:07 team.
00:10 Jodie, Jodie!
00:11 I spoke to him a short time ago and I am now officially the second most important Jodie
00:18 in our vote.
00:21 The primary vote, maintained in the way that Jodie has done it, is just an extraordinary
00:27 achievement.
00:28 Federal Mayor and Liberal candidate Nathan Conroy narrowed the gap, but not by nearly
00:33 enough.
00:33 In the next election we are coming for Albanese and his government.
00:39 And chose to focus on the brighter side of the by-election battle.
00:44 Just before I came up on the stage my wife whispered in my ear that we are having our
00:48 second child.
00:52 The party picked up votes from One Nation and the United Australia Party which didn't
00:56 stand candidates.
00:58 The people of Dunkley have sent Anthony Albanese a really strong message.
01:05 And it's not happy birthday!
01:09 Outer suburban seats like here in Dunkley are the ones the coalition need to win to
01:13 find a path to victory at the next election.
01:16 Opposition leader Peter Dutton wanted to make this by-election a referendum on the cost
01:21 of living.
01:22 But with Labor's primary vote slightly up, it's being seen as vindication for its stage
01:27 three tax cuts.
01:32 With Dunkley safely back in Labor hands, the Prime Minister's focus remains on the one
01:37 issue that dominated the campaign.
01:39 And on cost of living we'll continue to look for what measures we can put in place to take
01:45 pressure off cost of living without putting pressure on inflation.
01:50 The Liberal Party loss will trigger some self-reflection about its policy agenda.
01:54 Do you need now to start releasing more policy alternatives?
02:00 Of course and that's what we will do.
02:03 The by-election was held after the death of former MP Peter Murphy from cancer last year.
02:09 Embracing Ms Murphy's husband Rod Glover, Jodie Balliet has vowed to build on her legacy
02:14 and fight for her electorate in Canberra.
02:18 Because I am Frankston Tough.
