00:01It's been very warm for May.
00:04Compared to summer, not really, but for this time of year,
00:06we're talking 12, 14 degrees above average.
00:09Hobart Airport, 27.5 degrees.
00:11That's the second warmest day in Tasmania on record.
00:15Hobart City itself, around 26.5, also a May record,
00:19and their records go back 139 years.
00:23Davenport, only 21.1, but that was a record there.
00:26Launceston, around 25 degrees.
00:28Strawn, 26 degrees, records there.
00:31St Helens, Friendly Beach.
00:33Pretty much anywhere around the state had a record May day today
00:36in terms of maximum temperature.
00:38With the coldest temperatures around the country,
00:40I often hear of Liarweenie,
00:42which is that tiny little spot in the Highlands.
00:45I wonder, you don't know, that's very specific,
00:47but you don't know, happen to know what happened there today?
00:52I do know they had their warmest night on record for May.
00:56Would you believe?
00:57Kudos to you.
00:58At a warm 9.9.
01:01What was that number again?
01:02About 20 or something there today as well.
01:06Sorry, Liarweenie, I can't pronounce it.
01:07It was 9.9.
01:09That was their warmest May night on record, would you believe it?
01:11Only 9.9.
01:13Classic.
01:14OK, so what was driving this warmth?
01:18Yeah, you know, we're talking about this blocking high
01:21in the Tasman Sea, bringing those northerly winds,
01:23and now we're getting a strong cold front
01:25moving into South Australia in the Bight,
01:27and that's acted to funnel all that really warm air
01:29from Southern Australia and even Central Australia
01:32all the way down into Tasmania,
01:33and that's why we've seen those record temps.
01:36And much of Southern Victoria also saw many records broken there
01:39with their warmest day on record as well.
01:41And can you mention any spots in Southern Victoria
01:45that hit records?
01:46Like, was Warrnambool among them or not?
01:50Yeah, it was.
01:51Neil Edenhope, around 28 degrees.
01:54Warrnambool, Portland, also around 27, 28 records.
01:58Aries Inlet, 28.5 a record.
02:00Avalon, Geelong, 29.3 May record.
02:03Many of Melbourne's suburbs, 27, 28 May records for those.
02:07Bendigo, Shepherd and May records.
02:09So, I think we're talking about 40 or 50 May records
02:11in Victoria and Tasmania.
02:13So, it's been an incredibly warm day for this time of year.
02:16And how are the days ahead looking?
02:19Yeah, we're going to see that strong cold front
02:21move across South Australia tonight and tomorrow.
02:24And would you believe many areas in South Australia
02:26and Western Victoria could have their warmest May night
02:28on record tonight, you know,
02:30only dropping down to 16 or 18 degrees.
02:32That band of rain and storms will move across
02:34South Australia tomorrow.
02:36Victoria, New South Wales and Tasmania on Sunday
02:39with moderate falls of rainfall
02:41and much colder temperatures as well.
02:43So, by the time we get to Monday, Tuesday,
02:45we'll be back to normal temperatures,
02:47which is around 17 to 21 degrees.
02:49And, Dean, over the past couple of days,
02:51we've had a couple of stories about just how dried is the drought
02:54setting in Western New South Wales in particular.
02:58Can you tell us anything about what's been happening there
03:01and what's ahead for that part of the country?
03:06Yeah, particularly a bit for the northwest slopes and plains,
03:09so places like Tenterfield, Glen Iris, you know,
03:12and then up through St George and then the Granite Belt
03:14and southeast Queensland.
03:16Bit of a concerning situation developing there.
03:18We've had a very dry previous few months,
03:20and I think April itself was the second driest April on record
03:24for much of New South Wales.
03:25And we are moving into the dry season as well
03:28through those northern New South Wales, southeast Queensland,
03:31particularly inland areas.
03:32So, yeah, unfortunately,
03:33dry conditions continuing there in the coming weeks.
