The UK's weather is currently under the influence of low pressure, this means a broadly unsettled theme with many areas of rain developing through the day. Places such as southern Wales and central England will be dry at first, but outbreaks of rain will reach these areas later on, as bands of rain move northwards. Cloudy for many with some sunny spells across central England and eastern Wales. Breezy, especially over the southeast and Scotland. – This is the Met Office UK Weather forecast for the afternoon of 09/02/24. Bringing you today’s weather forecast is Alex Deakin.

00:00 Thanks for joining me for this Met Office weather update.

00:03 This afternoon, fairly grey.

00:05 And for many of us, we'll see some wet weather as well.

00:07 It will mostly be rain, but there is some snow still falling

00:10 over northern Scotland.

00:11 Here's the bigger picture from space.

00:13 And you can see one, two swirls of cloud,

00:16 two areas of low pressure that are dominating our weather.

00:21 These weather fronts have been slowly pushing northwards,

00:23 bringing wet weather, but also behind it,

00:25 introducing slightly milder air.

00:27 But much of Scotland is still in the cold air.

00:30 And so as the wet weather works in here,

00:32 we are still seeing some snow over the higher

00:35 ground of northern Scotland, where

00:36 we have a Met Office yellow warning in place.

00:38 With a gusty wind blowing here, that means blizzards possible.

00:42 So that makes for some pretty tricky driving conditions,

00:45 particularly on those higher routes.

00:46 A little bit of snow is likely for a time at lower levels

00:49 as well.

00:49 But through the central belt and further south,

00:51 it is all rain that we see.

00:53 And it's not going to rain everywhere all day.

00:55 There'll be some brighter spells through the Midlands,

00:57 a bit of sunshine.

00:58 And we've got the milder air in place across the south.

01:00 Temperatures could get into the teens.

01:02 It's a slightly warmer day over northern England

01:04 and southern Scotland, but still feeling pretty cold here,

01:07 and especially feeling cold across northern Scotland

01:10 with that gusty wind.

01:11 And so we'll continue to see some hill snow here

01:14 through the night.

01:15 And again, it could be icy in places also.

01:18 Elsewhere, we'll see further outbreaks

01:20 of rain for parts of Northern Ireland, Northern England,

01:23 and southern Scotland.

01:24 We'll see some showery rain working away

01:25 from eastern England.

01:26 So actually, a good part of England and Wales

01:29 becoming dry for a good part of the night.

01:32 With clearing skies, could turn a little misty in places.

01:34 And temperatures will drop well down into single figures.

01:37 But most places will be above freezing

01:40 as we start the weekend, certainly feeling

01:42 very cold, though, still in northern Scotland

01:44 with that strong and gusty wind only slowly easing.

01:47 We'll also start to see the winds picking up

01:49 in the southwest as we go into the weekend.

01:51 And showers expected here to develop pretty quickly

01:54 over southwest England and south Wales.

01:56 Further rain across central and southern Scotland,

01:58 further snow on the hills of northern Scotland,

02:00 but through the day becoming increasingly confined

02:03 to the tops of the hills.

02:05 Still pretty windy in the far north as well.

02:07 But for a good chunk of the Midlands, North Wales,

02:10 Northern England, eastern England,

02:12 and a large part of Northern Ireland,

02:14 it'll be a dry and a bright day on Saturday.

02:16 We'll see some winter sunshine coming through.

02:19 And that milder air will be continuing to trickle

02:22 its way northwards as well.

02:23 So temperatures for many should be a little bit above average.

02:26 But with the showers in the southwest and the gusty winds

02:29 here, it'll probably feel a little cooler and still

02:31 that cold air in place across the far north.

02:33 But for many, we'll get to double figures, 10, 11, 12,

02:36 perhaps even 13 in one or two spots.

02:39 During Saturday evening, not a great deal of change.

02:41 We'll see a few more of these showers moving in.

02:43 You can see a low pressure circulation here.

02:46 And that weather front still lingering

02:48 across the extreme north of Scotland

02:49 through the northern isles in particular.

02:51 It's still quite wet and windy even into Saturday night.

02:55 So still low pressure in control during Sunday.

02:58 But it has pushed that colder air further and further north.

03:01 So pretty much all parts of the UK in that milder air

03:04 by the time we get to Sunday.

03:06 It is still February, however.

03:08 So it's still going to feel pretty chilly

03:09 when the showers come along.

03:10 And with low pressure dominating,

03:12 there is always the likelihood of some showers during Sunday.

03:16 The rain perhaps clearing away from Shetland

03:18 and then bands of showers drifting in from the west.

03:21 The potential for a bit more wet weather

03:23 to come back into parts of the east.

03:25 But I think it'll be a murky old start over eastern areas.

03:28 Mist, low clouds, and fog around on Sunday.

03:30 That could take quite a while to clear away as well.

03:33 And a few more showers developing

03:35 through the day across parts of Wales, Western England,

03:37 and Western Scotland.

03:39 It is a messy old weekend then.

03:41 Temperatures on Sunday, again, high single figures,

03:44 maybe double digits across parts of the south.

03:46 So perhaps turning a little cooler

03:48 as we go through the course of the weekend.
