Bigger income tax cuts for millions of Australians will come into force from the 1st of July after the federal opposition confirmed it will wave the government’s proposal through parliament. After a fortnight of criticism, the Coalition folded on the first sitting day of 2024. But it is promising a broader tax policy for voters to mull over ahead of the next election.

00:00 (BELLS RINGING)
00:04 Seeking spiritual counsel on a drizzly Canberra morning.
00:07 Hopefully it'll set the tone for a respectful but difficult year.
00:12 Provided with a reality check...
00:15 You are not gods.
00:18 ..along with some timely advice.
00:20 You are allowed to ask for forgiveness.
00:23 That's something the Prime Minister's praying will be offered by voters
00:26 better off under his reshaped income tax cuts.
00:29 He can go right at the back.
00:31 (LAUGHTER)
00:32 Insisting it's the opposition struggling to find its policy position.
00:35 If they are faired income,
00:37 then their response must be to not only oppose,
00:41 but to promise to roll it back.
00:44 The Coalition's response was delivered.
00:47 We don't want to deny Australians tax cuts because people are hurting.
00:50 The opposition's been railing against the Prime Minister
00:53 for breaking an election promise.
00:55 A liar in the lodge.
00:56 And while not thrilled with the policy
00:59 and promising to try to amend it during parliamentary debate,
01:02 Coalition MPs and senators couldn't ignore the extra $800 a year
01:06 which will flow for most low and middle income earners.
01:09 We're supporting this change not to support the Prime Minister's lie,
01:13 but to support those families who need help now.
01:16 Ten days ago, Mr Dutton was taking a different tack.
01:19 I think you should call an election.
01:21 The opposition keen to broaden their attacks
01:23 by suggesting changes to income tax cuts
01:25 opens the door to scrapping tax concessions on property,
01:28 such as negative gearing.
01:30 With the Coalition now on side,
01:32 messy and perhaps expensive deals with the Greens and Senate crossbench
01:36 have been averted.
01:38 But don't expect Peter Dutton and members of the Coalition
01:41 to relent in their assault on Anthony Albanese's integrity.
01:45 In this place, character is always tested,
01:48 even by those on your own side.
01:50 I said the name Peter Dutton. What one word springs into your mind?
01:54 Thug.
01:56 Have you found me to be a thug?
01:58 I think some of the narrative is sort of retrofitting a particular purpose.
02:02 And it's only day one of the parliamentary year.
