It is the stage show that took the world by storm. The Phantom of the Opera set a new standard in the world of musicals in the late eighties. As part of a global program to mark its 40th anniversary, a new cast is rehearsing for a major production on Sydney Harbour.

00:02From 1990 to now, over 36 years and 15 productions, Guy Simpson has seen it all.
00:12It's irresistible to come back. I don't do this all the time.
00:15I've done many, many productions overseas and here.
00:18And it's just a show that has become a huge part of my life.
00:24He's now leading the cast through a show on a floating stage
00:28four times larger than what many are familiar with.
00:31In the beginning it felt like you were kind of running a 400m track event around the edge of the
00:36stage.
00:36I'm under the stage with a screen of the conductor for the cast.
00:41And so communication is difficult but we build that up over the next couple of weeks as we rehearse on
00:46site.
00:52But before those on site rehearsals there have been dozens of dry runs.
00:57Up until this point the singers and the orchestra have been practicing their parts separately.
01:02But in this rehearsal, known as the Sitz Probe, they're running through the whole show together for the first time.
01:12It's an epic sound in the room. It's a very emotional day.
01:17Back in the 90s we had no idea that it was going to become this.
01:21For us it was just the next job, the next show.
01:24Decades later it's still going strong.
