00:00 A trail of tragedy along an outback road as police investigate how four occupants of this
00:07 small car were killed in the first of two deadly crashes which more than doubled the
00:13 territory's road toll in a single evening.
00:16 Comparatively to other countries, the northern territory road toll is one of the worst in
00:19 the world.
00:20 Three women and one man were killed in a single vehicle rollover along a remote stretch of
00:25 the Roper Highway yesterday evening.
00:28 Another man was taken to Catherine Hospital for treatment.
00:32 Meanwhile a fifth person, a male pedestrian, lost his life in Darwin's rural area after
00:37 he was hit by a car along the Stuart Highway.
00:41 Police say the driver pulled over to help and called emergency services.
00:45 He returned a negative blood alcohol reading.
00:48 The pedestrian, police say, had been seen walking alone near the Stuart Highway before
00:53 the crash.
00:55 Police now tasked with identifying all five killed overnight.
00:58 A loss of five people in one night is tragic.
01:02 The road toll obviously has risen from three to eight.
01:08 Eight fatals in January is a significant number.
01:12 It's a number we don't want to see increasing.
01:14 Authorities say last night's dual tragedies happened along dark stretches of road and
01:18 they're urging anyone who may have witnessed the incidents or who have dash cam footage
01:22 of the area to come forward.
