00:00very hot indeed temperatures in the high 30s if not low 40s across much of New South Wales
00:07inland parts of Victoria and South Australia as well although it has cooled off across Adelaide
00:12and Melbourne just a touch on what we saw yesterday but compare that to Sydney today
00:16Sydney has already hit a top of 42 degrees in the city centre today still sitting in around that 40
00:23degree mark in the western suburbs but we have come down to the high 30s along the coast now
00:27so sweltering conditions but for the heatwave conditions it's the persistence of this heat
00:33that's more remarkable it's not just this one hot day in a row it was warm yesterday it's going to
00:37be hot again tomorrow and the next day and it's those continuous hot days interspersed with the
00:42warm nights as well that's really driving these severe heatwave conditions that will be ongoing
00:47through eastern New South Wales across the weekend okay so will this be the worst day though for high
00:52temperatures of this current hot spell look inland areas are really likely to see very little change
01:00over the coming days remaining in the high 30s to low 40s throughout the next few days for coastal areas
01:06including around the Sydney area it will be a touch milder tomorrow but only by a few degrees before that
01:12heat returns to pack another punch on Sunday so today and Sunday really looking like the hottest days in the
01:18period we will see some milder weather coming through early next week but it'll still be above average
01:23through that early part of the Christmas week unfortunately no real cooling off until later
01:29in the week is expected okay so temperatures are also staying high overnight you said is that unusual
01:34look heat waves which is when we see three or more days of unusually warm hot sorry daytime and nighttime
01:44temperatures compared to the average in a general sense they're not unusual for summertime we generally
01:50do see a few heat wave periods but the numbers we're talking about are significantly above average that's
01:55what's unusual about them and really what it means for communities is that it is simply more difficult
02:00to recover from that heat more difficult to cool down again overnight and that's when we can see some
02:05really dangerous risks to people's health when that heat is so relentless with so little relief yeah very
02:12little relief as you say so what's happening with the winds at the moment of course everybody thinks
02:16about bushfires at this time of the year yeah we certainly are seeing some fresh winds continuing
02:24across parts of the southeast high fire dangers are forecast today for parts of south australia
02:28victoria and new south wales extreme fire dangers are actually ongoing today across the wimmera and
02:34mallee in victoria across parts of eastern south australia too tomorrow we should see most areas dropping
02:40back to moderate to high fire danger ratings but with more heat to come later in the weekend it is
02:46possible we could see some districts particularly in new south wales potentially pushing up to extreme
02:51fire danger again what all of this means for residents is even if we do drop back to high fire
02:55danger ratings be aware that the landscape is dry it is very very hot and if we do get those windy
03:01conditions on top of it we're going to see dangerous fire weather conditions whether or not we've
03:07got a fire weather warning current so when's the next rain forecast miriam
03:13this weekend is the short answer to that question we're already seeing storms starting to develop
03:18across inland parts of the southeast including parts of new south wales victoria south australia
03:23today that's going to continue tomorrow with a lot of wet weather to come down on sunday we're getting
03:29essentially some tropical moisture coming down from the north it's coming all the way across the
03:34continent and feeding into showers and storms across those southeastern states on sunday in particular
03:40now that means we're likely to see some widespread moderate rainfall across victoria and parts of
03:45new south wales with the risk of heavy falls with storms it's really a day to watch out for
03:50particularly with that thunderstorm risk it's the last weekend before christmas so we know everyone's
03:54going to be out and about visiting friends and family getting the last minute christmas shopping done but
03:59just be aware that keeping half an eye on the bureau the bureau's app will be a good way to stay on top
04:04of any warnings we may need to issue across the weekend okay so you say things are going to cool
04:09down towards the end of next week so let's put you on the spot what are you expecting for thursday
04:14christmas day
04:17yeah well look for for new south wales we're certainly expecting much milder and more settled christmas day
04:23compared to what we're seeing this weekend with the heat and the storms currently forecasting a maximum
04:28temperature in the mid 20s or so so really fairly pleasant there across the rest of the eastern
04:33seaboard though brisbane could see some storms it's going to be very cool further south particularly for
04:38hobart and melbourne so a bit of a mixed bag across our christmas day what about perth and the other
04:43capital cities settled in perth but very hot and dry temperatures pushing up into the high 30s if not
04:52low 40s perth currently looking at a christmas day forecast of around 39 degrees adelaide is kind
04:58of going to get a bit of a bit of all of it settled weather and not too hot heading currently for a top
05:03of around 26. up in darwin across the tropical north of australia typical weather for this time of
05:08year with showers and storms darwin is no exception for christmas day unfortunately heading currently for
05:13for a top of 32 there
05:23you
