00:00 G'day, I'm Paul. Have you ever wondered what happens if you pull the emergency brake on an EV?
00:06 I've never done it myself and I was thinking, you know, what actually happens.
00:09 So today we're going to test it and see what happens. So let's jump in and get set up.
00:13 Okay. Now, let me explain what we're doing here. So this is the Kia EV6.
00:19 It's basically Kia's entry-level EV6 variant. So rear-wheel drive, single motor. I'm gonna get it up to speed.
00:26 We're gonna pull the emergency brake, which is located down here and
00:30 we'll see what happens.
00:33 So here's what we're gonna do. I'm gonna get it up to 80 k's an hour.
00:37 I'm gonna yank this switch down here and we'll see what happens.
00:41 So in old cars when you did like pull up the handbrake, it would just lock the wheel because you're physically
00:46 closing the brakes at the rear. This on the other hand, there's no easy way to ease it on.
00:52 It's either on or off. So I hope this doesn't just lock the wheels because we'll be in trouble.
00:56 So let's give this a shot. We'll get it up to 80 and then I'll flick the switch. Here we go.
01:00 Accelerating.
01:06 Okay, we're at 80 k's an hour. Here we go. I'm gonna pull the switch. Which will be the best.
01:11 Oh wow.
01:15 That was super gentle. That was literally just like me using the brakes myself.
01:21 Yeah, it wasn't what I was expecting. Okay, what happens if I flick it while we're driving?
01:25 I guess even if my foot's on the throttle it still jams it on which is good.
01:30 Let's do one more thing. I'm gonna switch stability control off. I'll see if that actually makes a difference when we accelerate.
01:39 Get it up to 80 again, and then I'll flick that switch.
01:43 Doesn't make any difference. It just basically slows down and comes to a complete stop.
01:50 So okay, that was slightly less eventful than I thought it was gonna be.
01:54 So I know what you're thinking. "But Paul, what happens if you're on gravel?" Good question.
02:02 We're on gravel now. So I'm gonna get it up to
02:06 what's called 70 k's an hour and I'm just going to flick the switch. Here we go.
02:12 That's a little more violent.
02:17 That's way more violent. So what happened there as we got close to the end of our travel
02:22 I could hear the ABS kicking in because with gravel it basically is a lower mu surface.
02:29 So you get a whole lot more slip as the car's trying to stop.
02:31 So we've built up a little bit of gravel in front of our wheel there.
02:35 So look, it means it works on gravel as well.
02:37 You can use this switch anywhere you want if your brakes aren't working or if you need to stop in a hurry and
02:43 that is your only option.
02:45 Well, there you go. We've learned that the emergency brake on an EV just works like, I guess,
02:52 pressing the brakes as hard as you possibly can.
02:55 It's not like a traditional handbrake that sort of locked up the wheels as as soon as you yanked it up.
03:00 Now, it is worth keeping in mind that some EVs could perform differently.
03:03 We've only tested the one here,
03:05 but I suspect most of them use a similar system when you do pull the emergency brake.
03:08 Otherwise, the car should be sent all over the road. When would you use it? I don't know really.
03:12 It's probably, yeah, if you have some issue with your brakes,
03:16 that is the switch you want to go for if everything goes pear-shaped.
03:20 So at least you know what it does now and that it works on an EV.
