00:00Okay, wait for that to go solid, there it is, no, again, it's just taken us over that, over that line.
00:10Now, second row, despite appearances on the outside, there's actually heaps of room here, so heaps of knee room,
00:15and that is with my seat quite far back as well, so pretty sort of impressive space.
00:19G'day, I'm Paul, a little while back in China, we drove the Havel H7,
00:25and I said, I can't wait to get it back in Australia to see if it is actually any good,
00:29and here you go, Havel H7, it is now in Australia.
00:32So, today we're going to do a detailed review of this, they're launching it in Australia in just one spec,
00:37it is the H7 Vanta, it is priced at just under $47,000 drive away, front wheel drive only, and hybrid only as well.
00:44So, today we will do a detailed review on this, if you do want to skip ahead to other parts of this review,
00:49you've got time codes that are up on the screen, or if you're on YouTube, you can scroll down and use the chapters below.
00:54Let's talk about design first.
00:56So, it's a bit interesting, because it kind of looks a bit rugged and off-road-y, but it is front wheel drive only,
01:02so it has that sort of boxy proportion, and unlike the H6, which sort of has that softer rounded edge to it,
01:09this just looks a bit more sort of harder in terms of what it can do.
01:13So, circular headlights up the front here, with LED daytime running light, full LED headlights as well,
01:19Havel badging on the front there, camera there as well for the 360 camera.
01:23Around the side here, you're sitting on a set of 19-inch alloy wheels with a machined finish there,
01:28and then piano black on the inside.
01:30You've got this wheel arch cladding, and it's interesting, we've got these sort of faux bolts here as well,
01:35that look like they unscrew, but I doubt they would, but it just sort of gives this, like I said,
01:40a bit of an off-road appearance, even though you're not going to be doing any off-road driving.
01:44Indicator built into the wing mirror there, with a camera on the side there as well.
01:47You've got some roof rails, privacy glass, a bit more of that plastic cladding,
01:52and then come around to the back with me.
01:53Now, around the back, you've got this black section up the top there,
01:56that sits on top of the LED light, circular width, one that runs along the top there.
02:01HEV, which indicates this is a hybrid, GWM badge up there, and H7 down the bottom as well.
02:08Shark fin aerial up the top.
02:09So, let me know what you reckon about the design of this, and the price.
02:13Do you think it is a bit pricey? Because it is quite a lot more expensive than a H6 with a hybrid system.
02:20You can get a H6 plug-in hybrid for around the same price,
02:23so it makes you wonder whether it is along the pricey side.
02:26So, let me know your thoughts in the comments section below.
02:29Okay, so we are inside the H7. We will start off with the key.
02:32This is what it looks like. You've got lock, boot, unlock, panic, and then have all down the bottom there.
02:39It's a proximity sensing key, so you can leave that in your pocket,
02:42and then once you're inside, you've got a push-button start just down here.
02:46Now, in terms of interior design, this is an interesting one,
02:49because the other Havel products are a bit more sort of, you know, normal car looking,
02:53whereas this, this has that sort of big handle and the, you know, multiple air vents
02:59and all these screw things around the place.
03:01It really makes you feel like you're driving a tank,
03:04and it is just a bizarre styling setup, given that it is just front-wheel drive.
03:08It's not even really capable of doing any off-road driving.
03:11So, really sort of curious setup, even down to the gear selector being up here.
03:16So, you see it there, you see it on the screen, you see it down here.
03:19I just don't understand some of that stuff, but anyway, different design choice, I guess.
03:24In terms of the rest of it, it's quite dark in here.
03:27There's not really a huge amount of colour separation,
03:29and it would be nice to see the option of different colour palettes inside these cabins,
03:33because we did notice when we were over in China, out on that Shanghai trip with GWM,
03:39that they had an aura there that had a completely different interior to what we're used to seeing.
03:44So, it does appear that for the Chinese market,
03:46they do offer a variety of different interiors for customers to pick from.
03:50So, anyway, in terms of touch points, though, this is nice and soft there,
03:53but what I did notice this morning on the drive-in,
03:56your elbow kind of leans on this bit, which is harder than that bit,
03:59so you have to really be quite far back to get the sort of benefit of that softer surface.
04:05It is soft on the door, though, which is good news.
04:07How soft are they? We've got our gerometer.
04:09We've tested the main surfaces in this cabin.
04:11If you want to see how this car compares to others that we've tested before,
04:14there is a link in the description below.
04:16Now, build quality.
04:18This feels fairly solid there, and this is what door slam sounds like.
04:23Now, interestingly, this car's called the Havel Big Dog in China,
04:29and it literally, like last month, got an update.
04:33So, we're getting the not updated model.
04:36The update comes with a whole bunch of bits that you can actually add to the car as customisation.
04:40The interior looks fairly similar, but there are a couple of sort of changes
04:43to just the layout of some of the components inside the cabin.
04:47Now, let's chat infotainment.
04:48So, this central display is just under 15 inches in size,
04:52and then a 10.25-inch display ahead of the driver.
04:55In terms of infotainment, it's pretty basic.
04:57There is no in-built satellite navigation.
05:00You've got AM, FM, DAB digital radio, and just an eight-speaker unbranded sound system.
05:05A shortcut menu from the top there as well.
05:08Nothing too crazy, though, and, I don't know, we have seen some of the upcoming infotainment systems
05:14that they're working on out of China, and they look much more sophisticated than this.
05:18This kind of feels like a bit of an old-school setup and perhaps one step behind the rest of their newer cars.
05:24So, you know, hopefully that stuff will come soon.
05:27In terms of brightness, that's one thing that they just can't seem to get right.
05:31At night time, these screens are so bright, and even if you turn them down all the way,
05:36they are just still piercingly bright, and there just doesn't seem to be a way to turn them down enough
05:40so that it's not distracting.
05:42And then, if you leave them in that fully low setting, and then you're driving during daytime,
05:46they're really dark, and you can't see them.
05:48So, there's no sort of intelligence around how bright the display is while you're driving the vehicle.
05:53This is what Apple CarPlay looks like.
05:54This is wireless.
05:56You can see they're slightly laggy, but it takes up that entire display
05:59and works sort of fairly well from that regard.
06:02And this is what Android Auto looks like.
06:05This is also wireless.
06:07There it is there.
06:08Yeah, one thing that is common between this and Apple CarPlay is you just can't shortcut back to that home screen.
06:16You're going to go back through this menu and then go up there to get back to your home screen
06:20if you need to change climate functions and stuff.
06:22You can click on one of these to then bring up the climate menu,
06:25but it's just a bit of a clumsy application that I think could be a little bit better.
06:29Screen ahead of the driver, it is sort of fairly straightforward.
06:32You have a button here that transitions between volume and music selection to screen selection,
06:38and that allows you to then flick through the different menus on the screen there
06:40with the same set of controls, which just takes away some of the complexity
06:44in running through those functions, and you get a little head-up display as well.
06:47In terms of parking, you have front and rear parking sensors and a 360 camera.
06:53I'll show you what that looks like.
06:54So it's actually not a bad view there, and then you can flick between all of these different angles
07:00if you want clear chassis as well.
07:03Reverse tracking, which is a clever feature if you do want to follow the path that you just came down.
07:09What else have we got there?
07:11A couple of other sort of bits and pieces there too, but pretty decent quality camera.
07:15And that's what the horn sounds like.
07:17So practicality, we'll start off with your connectivity.
07:19You've got a wireless phone charger there with some cooling vents.
07:23You've got a single USB-A charger, which is bizarre, and then a 12-volt outlet.
07:27You have a second USB-A charger up the top here, but no USB-C,
07:31so it seems like really old technology that they're sort of playing with there.
07:35Cup holders over here.
07:36You do have a really generously-sized centre console with air conditioning, which is nice to see.
07:42Let's have a look at the glove box.
07:44A reasonably-sized glove box, a bit of storage there as well, and then Sunny's holder up the top.
07:49By the way, you've got a full-glass sunroof there as well, which is nice to see.
07:54And then on the comfort front, you have dual-zone automatic climate control.
07:59You've got to go through these menus to adjust temperature.
08:02Don't know if I love that.
08:02Heated seats, though, and also heated steering wheel, along with cooling for the front row.
08:08In terms of comfort of the seats, not too bad.
08:12I spent a fair bit of time in the car now, and they're sort of comfortable but not amazing.
08:16But you do get electric seat adjustments.
08:18You can go forwards and backwards.
08:19Your backrest can go forwards and backwards.
08:22You lift the front of the seat, which you can't do in some GWM products.
08:25Back of the seat as well.
08:26You also have lumbar adjustment, which is good.
08:29No seat memory, though.
08:30And then on the steering front, you have both tilts and reach adjustment.
08:36I have mentioned before that in some Havel products, it feels like the steering wheel just sits a bit like that.
08:42This one is better.
08:43So the level of adjustment there is better, and it sort of sits a bit nicer in the hand, but still not super comfortable.
08:49And then on our reach test, all of this stuff is easy to reach while you're driving.
08:53Now, second row.
08:53So despite appearances on the outside, there's actually heaps of room here.
08:56So heaps of knee room, toe room is excellent, head room is really good.
09:00And that is with my seat quite far back as well.
09:02So pretty sort of impressive space.
09:04You've got air vents down here, a single USB A port, a little bit of storage there as well.
09:10And we've got centre armrests.
09:11Two cupholders, you have these manual privacy blinds.
09:15And then, does the window go all the way down?
09:18Let's find out.
09:18So let's auto up and down.
09:21So close.
09:24Now, cargo space.
09:26Let's see what it's like.
09:27So you've got a little under 500 litres to play with here.
09:31Reasonable amount of space in there.
09:33You've got some hooks off to the side.
09:35Show you what it looks like with our suitcase in there.
09:38So reasonably sized.
09:39Not a huge amount of space, but not sort of tiny.
09:42You do lose all of your underfloor, though, because under here, you've got 12-volt battery.
09:48And then you've got the hybrid battery plus cooling for that hybrid battery as well.
09:53So you don't really have any accessible space down there.
09:56And then, because of that, you're getting a tyre repair kit instead of a full-size spare or a space saver.
10:04If you do want to expand the space, you can drop the second row.
10:07And that increases the space to under 1,400 litres.
10:16All right.
10:17We've just hit the road in the Haval H7.
10:21I'll start off just by talking about the safety systems first.
10:26Yeah, this is one of the things I've mentioned in pretty much all of these reviews.
10:29That they probably just need a little bit more tuning from the point of view of accuracy.
10:35Of things like speed sign recognition.
10:36We've just passed a speed sign there that was 120.
10:39Nothing has come up here on the screen.
10:41It'll often come up telling me to concentrate on my driving.
10:44Even when I'm looking like literally straight ahead and concentrating on my driving.
10:48So just for the sake of this, I'm going to switch all this stuff off because it is pretty frustrating.
10:54Now, let's talk about what is powering the H7 hybrid.
10:59So under the bonnet here, you've got a mixture of internal combustion and electric.
11:04And the internal combustion engine is a 1.5 litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine.
11:09That alone makes 110 kilowatts of power and 230 newton metres of torque.
11:14Now, that is pretty much what you'd expect to find in a car this size normally.
11:18That's before it's hybridised.
11:20So the fact that they've added a hybrid drivetrain as well gives it a bit more kick.
11:24So the electric output is 130 kilowatts and 300 newton metres.
11:28Again, that in isolation would be more than enough to get this thing moving without any dramas.
11:33That all combines to give you just under 180 kilowatts of power and over 500 newton metres of torque.
11:41So that is an incredible amount.
11:43But the only downside to all of that is it is front-wheel drive only.
11:47And that presents a few issues because if you're driving from a standing start, for example,
11:53and you have any steering input, and I found this out the other day when I was trying to take off on a wet road,
11:59it will basically flare up that inside wheel and give you a bit of torque steer.
12:04If it is wet, once it flares up, the wheel traction control kicks in and stops your movement briefly.
12:11And that can present an issue if you're trying to pull out into traffic.
12:13It is just far too much torque suddenly.
12:16It really does need to be better tapered for a front-wheel drive car.
12:19It's just way too much power to be sending to the front there instantly.
12:23And it's something that they need to work on just in terms of revising how hard it hits when you jump on the throttle.
12:29I think there's just a bit more work that can be done there.
12:32Outside of those scenarios, though, when you do get stuck into the throttle,
12:35it gives you a nice kick in the back and it gets up and moves without any hesitation.
12:39So it is a really good drivetrain from that point of view.
12:42Even at low speed, when it is taking off and transitioning between electric,
12:47which you can see here when it's in EV mode, and then the internal combustion engine kicking on.
12:52I'm just waiting for these kangaroos.
12:55It's like peak hour here at the moment.
12:57It is really nice and smooth. You don't feel it.
12:59So from that point of view, it is an excellent hybrid drivetrain.
13:02Now, what does all that mean for fuel economy?
13:05So GWM claims a number of under 6 litres per 100 k's.
13:10We're currently sitting on with predominantly highway driving, where are we here, 7.6.
13:16So, OK, but not amazing.
13:18Would have liked to see a much lower number there,
13:20because that is higher than what we see in something like a RAV4,
13:23which has a similar drivetrain, obviously not with as much kick, though.
13:27Now, sine waves.
13:30Let's see what this is like at 130 k's an hour on our sine waves.
13:34It's maximum speed limit in Australia, and it gives us a good idea of body control.
13:42There you go.
13:42So one of the interesting things here is that GWM has hired the former head of ride and handling for Holden,
13:51and it's funny, they've actually announced that they'll be doing all of their ride and handling tuning here at the Proving Ground that we film at,
13:57which was Holden's old Proving Ground back in the day.
14:00So it's kind of like a return home for Rob Tribbiani, who's doing all that work.
14:05He hasn't touched this car yet, though.
14:06Well, he is working on this car at the moment, but he hasn't actually touched the version we're driving.
14:11And it's surprising, because it actually drives quite nicely in terms of the ride.
14:14In and around town, it's nice and smooth.
14:16Even on the sine waves there, the body control's great.
14:19So from a suspension point of view, this car's actually pretty well sorted straight out of the box.
14:23We'll see what it's like when we go for our faster drive,
14:25and we get to that sort of limit handling condition to see how it fares there with all that power through the front.
14:30But just from a comfort point of view, it actually feels pretty good.
14:36Now, bumpy road time.
14:37We do this at 90km an hour.
14:40Represents a shocking road.
14:42Just a standard road, if you live in Victoria.
14:4590km an hour here across these corrugations,
14:48and this actually feels really quite nice.
14:52We've got a condensed sine wave coming up here as well.
14:55Let's see what this feels like.
14:59Yeah, nice.
15:00It feels very impressive.
15:02I don't mind that at all.
15:08Now, let's talk about drive modes.
15:10You have eco, normal, sport, and snow.
15:13I'm going to pop this into sport.
15:16We're going to go for a lap of the ride and handling track here,
15:19just to see how the car feels when it's pushed to its limits.
15:23We test all cars back-to-back in the same way to see how they perform.
15:29So, here we go.
15:30All right, here's our first turn.
15:33All right.
15:37We've got a bit of body roll there.
15:40And you can see the traction control light flashing there,
15:49because it is trying to send 500 newton metres of torque through front-wheel drive,
15:54which isn't a very good idea.
15:58But it sort of gets up and moves really well.
16:00Like, it has got some pull.
16:03And while it does have body roll, it is pretty predictable.
16:06There's not a great deal of steering feel.
16:08It's sort of pretty numb there.
16:10But you can kind of get an idea of what the car is doing.
16:15That's fairly predictable in terms of how it works.
16:18One thing I did notice is that...
16:21There's that overactive hazard light flashing.
16:28Actually, it does it regardless of whether you're travelling quickly or not.
16:31It will flash if there is an uneven road surface and you're braking.
16:35It's one of these hybrid issues where it senses a loss of contact with the road really briefly.
16:41It actually brings me to...
16:43So, signing off, handling...
16:44Yeah, feels fine.
16:46Not a sports car, which is fine.
16:48But the brake pedal feel.
16:50It is terrible.
16:51I don't know what they've done here,
16:52but you literally just touch the brake pedal and it just dives.
16:56It's like an on-off switch.
16:57There is just no progression there on the pedal.
17:01And every single time you touch it, it just feels like it is diving backwards and forwards.
17:07And that is one of the symptoms of the hybrid drivetrain.
17:11It doesn't blend well between regeneration,
17:14which is where when you brake,
17:16it plumbs energy back into the battery that you can later use.
17:19And as a result of that,
17:20you have this inconsistency between the brake pedal when it's in regen
17:24and when you're using the friction brakes.
17:26And it is most obvious when you're in stop-start traffic is you just get this.
17:30It's really tiring, just constant diving.
17:33So, that is something they need to work on and get sorted
17:36because it is pretty frustrating.
17:42In terms of road noise,
17:43it's not the quietest cabin in the world.
17:47You do get a bit of tyre noise coming into the cabin,
17:50but it's not sort of over the top.
17:52You will notice it most on course-chip roads.
17:54We did put it up against our calibrated sound meter,
17:57and this is how it went.
17:59If you want to compare this car to other cars that we've tested before,
18:02there's a link in the description below
18:03that will take you to a table with all of our results.
18:05On the visibility front,
18:07out the front it's good.
18:08Massive wing mirror,
18:09so you can see clearly down the side there.
18:11Visibility out the back, though, is quite poor.
18:13It's a very narrow window envelope,
18:15and the seat backs really block your vision out the back there.
18:20So, I think that could do with some work
18:21or potentially have a digital rear view mirror
18:24that lets you see out the back there
18:25without having to be too concerned
18:27about having your views infringed.
18:32Okay, time to test the lane support systems.
18:35We do this at 70 k's an hour.
18:38I've just switched all this stuff back on now.
18:42Let's see how that goes.
18:44Okay, so that is on.
18:46Wait for the steering wheel to go solid.
18:55Okay.
18:56All right, there it is.
18:58So, we use the three outer lanes here to see what this is like.
19:01This is already pushing us quite close to that left-hand lane,
19:04and, you know, it gets progressively harder as we go up.
19:08This is pretty much the easiest one,
19:10and it's sticking quite close to that side.
19:13So, we'll try next lane over.
19:19Okay.
19:21Wait for that to go solid.
19:22There it is.
19:24No.
19:25Again, it's just taken us over that line entirely.
19:30All right, we'll try the outermost lane.
19:35Let's see how that goes.
19:36Wait for that to go solid.
19:44Doesn't look like it wants to work up here.
19:49Oh, doesn't look like it wants to work.
19:51I will mention just one thing that I found really weird.
19:54This indicator, it's really hard for it to, like, work properly
19:59when you put it on to switch it off.
20:02Sometimes, it doesn't switch off.
20:05It's really weird.
20:06I can't get it to do it now,
20:07but I did notice a few times that when I was driving,
20:10I just couldn't get it to switch off.
20:11You would then turn it on the other way,
20:12and it would then flash in the opposite direction,
20:14and it was like, just turn off.
20:16So, it's one of these weird ones.
20:18I can't quite replicate it now,
20:19but it was just giving me grief earlier today.
20:22There you go.
20:23I just tried to deactivate it then,
20:24but it's not switching off now.
20:26Yeah, that's weird.
20:31Okay, it's time to do a little bit of performance testing.
20:34I'm going to pop that into sport mode.
20:36I just want to see how quickly it accelerates.
20:38We're going to go from zero all the way through to 120,
20:41which is going to get us the 80 to 120 overtaking time as well.
20:46All right, so, line that up.
20:50We'll see if it's got, like, a launch control.
20:52ESC function is not turned off.
20:55Launch control unavailable.
20:56Okay, so, turn ESC off,
20:58and then we'll try launch control.
21:01Okay, there we go.
21:02Launch control activated.
21:07Okay.
21:1080.
21:13100.
21:13And 120.
21:18Okey-dokey.
21:20That's cool that it's got launch control.
21:21Sort of quite undramatic, but that's all right.
21:26So, it is zero to 100 in 9.32 seconds,
21:31which is reasonable,
21:33and then 80 to 120 in 6.82,
21:36which is okay, but not amazing.
21:39That's the funny thing.
21:39With 500, over 500 newton metres of torque,
21:42you would have thought it would be quicker than that,
21:44but it is just an issue there
21:47with being able to activate
21:49that much torque through the front wheels.
21:51Even with launch control,
21:52it is just hard to contain that,
21:54and as a result, they have to taper it in,
21:56and it's not sort of overly fast.
21:59Now, let's do a stop from 100
22:00so we can see what the brake and tyre package is like.
22:06Okay, here we go.
22:08Okay.
22:12I actually felt pretty strong from here,
22:20so 100 to zero, nice, 2.82 seconds,
22:2438.75 metres,
22:26which is really decent stopping distance.
22:29The brakes are smoking, though,
22:31which is not very good.
22:33I mean, that's one stop from 100,
22:36and the brakes are smoking.
22:37Okay.
22:37Okay.
22:42Yeah, I just wanted to confirm that was the brakes.
22:45Look, the car has 600 kilometres on the clock,
22:48so this will be the first hard stop it's done,
22:50but, yeah, I mean,
22:52one stop from 100,
22:54having that happen to the brakes
22:57just isn't very good.
22:58Kind of gives you an indication
22:59that the brakes are perhaps undersized
23:01a little bit for this vehicle.
23:03Okay, so, how quickly does it go in reverse?
23:07Here we go.
23:12All right, so, 46 kilometres an hour.
23:19So, Havel H7, what do we reckon?
23:22Look, to be honest,
23:23I reckon it's probably a little over
23:25in terms of pricing.
23:26I just don't get why you would buy this
23:27above and beyond a full plug-in hybrid H6.
23:30Yeah, I know that it looks a little different
23:32in terms of styling,
23:33but I don't know that that's compelling enough
23:34to justify the big price jump.
23:36I just feel that it is just a little let down
23:38in some of those areas.
23:39You know, it is punchy enough,
23:41but sending all of that torque
23:42through the front wheels
23:42doesn't make it a really engaging
23:44driving experience.
23:46The brakes felt like they were a bit undersized
23:47there with our braking stop as well.
23:49So, anyway, let me know your thoughts
23:51in the comments section below.
23:52What do you think about the pricing?
23:53What do you think about the concept
23:54of this in general?
23:55Do you think it would work better
23:57as an all-wheel drive?
23:58I'm keen for your feedback.
23:59If you did enjoy the video,
24:00please make sure you like it
24:01and you share it with your mates.
24:02But until next time,
24:03take it easy.
