00:00 These results give us insight into how Australians are experiencing abuse now and the types of
00:07 abuse that they have experienced throughout childhood.
00:10 The Personal Safety Survey is done every four to five years and asks Australian men, 12,000
00:16 Australian men and women, about their experiences of childhood abuse, sexual and physical assault,
00:22 harassment, economic and emotional abuse.
00:25 And the latest results suggest that more than a quarter of Australian women have experienced
00:31 partner violence or abuse since the age of 15.
00:34 And that's in comparison to about 15% of men.
00:38 For the first time, the survey also asked respondents detailed questions about their
00:43 experience of childhood abuse.
00:45 And it found 4.3 million adults have experienced violence or witnessed violence perpetrated
00:52 towards a parent before they turned 15 years old.
00:56 About 1.7 million women and 1 million men have experienced physical or sexual assault
01:02 in their childhood.
01:03 And just to break down those figures a little more for, women's first incident of childhood
01:07 sexual abuse, 49% were aged between five and nine years old, 84% never told the police
01:15 about the abuse and 88% knew their perpetrator.
01:19 For men, the figures were quite similar, 51% were aged between 10 and 14 when the sexual
01:25 abuse first occurred.
01:27 94% of incidents involved one perpetrator and 99% have never told the police about the
01:34 abuse.
01:35 For both men and women, roughly 30 to 40% of incidents involved a family member as the
01:40 perpetrator.
01:41 And Rachel, the survey also asked people about economic abuse.
01:45 What do the results tell us on that?
01:49 So previously economic abuse was grouped together with emotional abuse.
01:52 So this is the first time that more detailed questions about different types of economic
01:57 abuse have been asked to the respondents and they include behaviors such as sabotage and
02:07 the latest survey results show the majority of victims of economic abuse are women.
02:11 The results suggest 1.6 million women in Australia have experienced economic abuse and that's
02:17 18% of all women in Australia compared to 7.8% of men who have experienced economic
