Western Australia's Road Safety Commission says it will be reviewing penalties from AI road safety cameras, after an avalanche of complaints about harsh fines over seatbelts worn incorrectly. One woman who is a disability support worker says she's about to lose her license because of her passenger's involuntary infringements.

00:18It's sent anxiety through the roof. It's not something that I was ever prepared for.
00:25I've driven for over 20 years and to my best knowledge I've never received any loss of demerit points.
00:32AI safety cameras were rolled out in WA last year aiming to reduce the road toll capturing unlawful mobile phone
00:40use and seatbelts worn incorrectly.
00:42Since last October around 36,000 seatbelt infringements have been sent out. Penalties start at $550 and four demerit points.
00:52For Ellie, her passenger's involuntary movement could mean the loss of her licence.
00:57It's beyond nerve-wracking. I'm a full-time single mum and my work means everything to me and not only
01:06to me but I really enjoy my work.
01:09It's my huge passion and my clients depend on me.
01:13She's one of hundreds who are planning to challenge the penalties.
01:16The Road Safety Commission says a review is underway assessing whether infringements can be transferred from drivers to breaching passengers.
01:24The police officers exercise discretion. It's hard for cameras to do that.
01:28So we think there's a question that needs to be asked and answered around what's the proportionate, fair, common sense
01:34sort of approach we should take to these type of offences.
01:37Yeah, we'll take advice in relation to those issues from the Road Safety Commissioner.
01:42Like I said, we will continue to do what we can to improve safety. I can understand why people are
01:48upset.
01:48The Department of Transport has been given additional staff to deal with the volume of inquiries.
