00:00 G'day, I'm Paul, Joop has just taken the wraps off the Grand Wagoneer Concept and my word
00:05 is that this looks very much like the final product.
00:08 Today I'm going to take you through five cool things about the Grand Wagoneer, but before
00:12 we get started I will run you through an overview of what exactly this all means.
00:17 Now what is the Grand Wagoneer?
00:19 If you are like some of the Australian viewers that are watching this and have never heard
00:22 of this before, think Breaking Bad, it was the car that Skyler drove around in, the wood
00:26 panelling on the side, it is the bee's knees of Jeep products.
00:31 The Wagoneer brand name will become part of a portfolio of vehicles for Jeep and it will
00:36 use the Grand Wagoneer Concept here as something that they're going to launch it all with.
00:41 There will be likely a smaller version called the Wagoneer coming as well.
00:45 The platform of this car is going to be shared with the Ram 1500, but it won't ride like
00:50 the pickup truck that it's based on.
00:52 This car will have independent front and rear suspension, but still be massively capable
00:57 off-road which is what Jeeps are all about.
00:59 Now let's talk about the delays here.
01:01 So it was meant to be released in 2013, but series of delays and postponements meant that
01:06 it was pushed back to 2019.
01:07 There were then further delays which pushed it back to 2020, then COVID struck and instead
01:12 of being released this year we're only seeing the concept right now and production won't
01:16 start until next year at the earliest.
01:19 And finally, it'll be built in Detroit, Michigan alongside the Ram 1500 that it shares a platform
01:24 with.
01:25 Now let's get stuck into the five cool things about the new Grand Wagoneer.
01:29 First up Uconnect 5.
01:31 Uconnect is of course the infotainment system that's used across a number of FCA cars and
01:36 Uconnect 5 is the latest iteration of this.
01:39 It's based on an Android operating system and it was revealed earlier this year in 2020.
01:44 It contains six gigabytes of internal storage and it can then be further expanded with flash
01:48 storage up to 64 gigabytes.
01:51 It has five times more processing power than the last generation and I mean if you've used
01:57 the last generation they're actually pretty quick so I'm excited to see what extra elements
02:01 this brings to that Uconnect system.
02:02 Another cool feature is Uconnect 5 can support up to four additional displays and display
02:07 15 million pixels.
02:09 To put that into context that is a TI83 graphics calculator.
02:13 It'll do 6,000 pixels and the capability of Uconnect 5 is double that of a 4k television
02:19 and that is all with a car's infotainment system.
02:22 In addition to that it brings over-the-air updates for extra features and security updates
02:26 and it will also do wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
02:29 Now moving on to the next cool feature LEDs.
02:32 Car manufacturers love flexing big time when it comes to LEDs.
02:35 Audi's LED game is really strong but I think Jeep has gone next level here with LEDs.
02:40 I'm looking at pictures of the front of the Wagoneer.
02:43 You can see the grille there if you look closely.
02:45 It's got that obsidian black color to it and Jeep has that traditional seven slat grille
02:50 but in between the slats on the grille are individual banks of LEDs and then above that
02:55 you have an LED strip that lights up across the entire grille and then Wagoneer is extruded,
03:01 it sticks out and that is backlit as well so at night time this car is really going
03:06 to stand out.
03:07 If you take a closer look at the headlights you get bi-LED headlights but the bi-LED headlight
03:12 module sits within real teak wood so you see that around the frame there and I think that
03:17 looks really cool.
03:18 If you go around to the rear of the car more LED there with a strip that runs along the
03:21 back of the car and even more of that extruded grand Wagoneer lettering.
03:26 It really is quite a strong presence out on the road.
03:29 Now moving on to the next cool feature, the roof.
03:31 So it is just a standard panoramic roof, it looks pretty cool.
03:34 You see that in most cars today but Jeep has buried an Easter egg in there because the
03:39 roof features a mapped outline of Detroit.
03:43 Detroit is of course where they're building this alongside the Ram 1500 so it's a bit
03:46 of a homage to where the car is created and where it all starts and it'll be cool when
03:51 this is seen in other places around the world that you look up and you'll be able to see
03:55 that map of Detroit.
03:56 Now our friends over at Autoblog have even enhanced that image and found the factory
04:00 where it's going to be built so there is a fair bit of detail there and I'll be keen
04:03 to see whether this translates from the concept into the production car.
04:07 Okay moving on to the next cool feature and that is the interior.
04:09 I don't know, the outside I don't love and styling is entirely subjective so you may
04:14 love the outside but I don't know, I just think it looks a bit gaudy but the inside
04:18 is sensational.
04:19 It just looks really high-end luxury and I think that's what they're trying to strike
04:22 here with Grand Wagoneer.
04:24 It needs to be high-end and premium.
04:26 Just have a look at that, it looks fantastic.
04:28 Even that two-pillar steering wheel, you really don't see that very often and I think it just
04:32 adds that element of luxury.
04:33 You've got that suede headliner, you have recycled materials used throughout the cabin
04:37 but have a look on the passenger side.
04:40 There is a screen built into the dashboard.
04:42 Now this isn't the first car to feature this.
04:44 We have seen this previously on the Porsche Taycan and I had a chance to play with it
04:48 in the Taycan and it is kind of a pointless feature but I just love the fact that they've
04:52 integrated an LCD display there and this is part of what I mentioned earlier with Uconnect
04:56 5.
04:57 This is one of those four screens they're able to add to the rest of the car.
05:00 So in addition to that 10.25-inch screen, you also get 10.1-inch screens in the back
05:06 seat.
05:07 There's also a screen beneath the infotainment screen in the front seat and then you get
05:10 an additional screen in the second row for controlling your heating and cooling.
05:15 So this is a really nicely presented interior and a couple of other cool things that have
05:19 come up here.
05:20 So 3D wood inlays are used throughout the cabin but if you have a look at that dashboard
05:24 beneath the screen on the passenger side, the Grand Wagoneer insignia is inscribed in
05:29 raw aluminium directly into the wood.
05:33 So it's this kind of stuff that's going to sell this car because that isn't very easy
05:37 to do.
05:38 A couple more points I want to make here about the interior.
05:39 The Grand Wagoneer is a seven-seater but as you can see here in the concept, it's kind
05:44 of like a six-seat business layout.
05:45 So in the second row there, you've got that divider which means you don't need to be too
05:48 close to your passengers and those seats are individually controlled in terms of heating
05:52 and cooling.
05:53 So that looks like a pretty decent setup.
05:55 OK, finally, plug-in hybrid.
05:57 We do know that the Grand Wagoneer is going to come in petrol, probably a V6, a V8, the
06:01 standard raft of engines you expect in these types of cars but Jeep has said that it will
06:06 be fitting a plug-in hybrid drivetrain.
06:08 Now we do know that the 4XE Wrangler, which is the new plug-in hybrid version of the Wrangler,
06:14 uses a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine mated to an electric drivetrain
06:19 but I don't think they'll be fitting that to the Grand Wagoneer.
06:21 It's too big of a car to support a drivetrain like that so they'll probably fit a V6 or
06:27 a V8 as standard with the plug-in hybrid mated to probably a V6 petrol engine and that'll
06:33 mean that it has, according to rumours on the internet, a driving range of around 30
06:37 miles or about 50 kilometres on electric power alone and then you'll be able to charge that
06:42 at home using a standard power plug as well and the way this works is that it can use
06:46 both of those modes of transport, so the internal combustion engine and the electric motor or
06:51 it can just drive on electric power alone.
06:54 So it'll be interesting to see how this fits into the Grand scheme.
06:57 It forms part of a wider remit that Jeep has to electrify all of the vehicles in its range
07:02 and this is just the next one that's going to be electrified as part of that project.
07:07 So there it is, your first look at the Jeep Grand Wagoneer concept that's probably going
07:12 to be exactly what the production car looks like when it finally does arrive next year
07:16 and they start building it.
07:17 Let me know in the comments below what do you think, is it a bit sort of ugly, do you
07:21 like the look of it and what do you think of the interior, I think that's where they've
07:24 really kicked some massive goals.
07:26 Let me know in the comments section below.
