00:00 Well, hyper-realism has been gaining popularity in the food industry,
00:04 attracting foodies with visuals and taste.
00:07 You wouldn't want to put them to waste.
00:09 And what better way to make baking a piece of cake
00:12 than learning from the artist behind the Mona Lisa cake from Netflix.
00:16 Is it cake too?
00:18 There you go. We have with us Mico Hauhok Uy.
00:21 Welcome. Welcome back to Manila.
00:23 Hi, Ms. Christine. Thank you so much for having me here.
00:26 You know, it's such an honor.
00:27 Well, you know, it's incredible.
00:29 I mean, all the things that you create,
00:32 you are totally a different person now from when you left seven years ago.
00:37 Thank you so much.
00:38 Yeah, I think it's being in the US, you know, being immersed in different,
00:43 in the food industry itself, you know, being there itself is different.
00:47 The experience, it has changed me a lot.
00:49 And I'm sure you're happy you said yes,
00:51 because I know you were having so many doubts of wanting to join the show.
00:56 And of course, it's quite scary to put you in that.
00:59 It is. It is really quite scary, you know, because I was like,
01:04 who am I, first of all, to be considered, you know, in the show?
01:07 Oh my God. Thank you.
01:08 You are now Mico.
01:09 Thank you. Thank you so much.
01:10 But I was like, I actually freaked out when they said,
01:15 you know, when they told me that you are in the show.
01:17 The day before my flight, I actually freaked out.
01:19 I wanted to back out because I was just too scared.
01:22 I didn't know if my skill was good enough for the show.
01:25 We are so happy that you went on to do it.
01:29 So I guess you can understand, you know, how a lot of people,
01:32 when we do see your work, maybe we're also like you, a bit hesitant.
01:36 Am I good enough? Should I attend your workshop?
01:39 Because we are our biggest critics.
01:42 Critics. Exactly.
01:44 So that's why. And in particular with my work.
01:46 So I was like, is my skill good enough?
01:48 Yeah.
01:49 But, you know, so.
01:50 But, you know, OK, so you do have workshops.
01:52 I mean, so you would attend workshops.
01:55 Now you're actually giving the workshop.
01:57 Yes.
01:57 Tell us about when, where and the type of things that we will be learning.
02:02 So I actually have two upcoming workshops, and it's going to be on the 20th and the 21st
02:07 at the City Cakes and Co-Lifestyle classes in Muntinlupa City.
02:12 So these are two hyper-realistic cake classes.
02:15 One is a charcuterie board cake class, and the other one is a painted cake class.
02:20 So, yeah, I'll be there to supervise them, especially in the learning process.
02:25 I'll be there to teach them, you know, everything, especially the foundation.
02:29 So can anybody join?
02:30 Must I have a level of expertise in order for me to take your class?
02:34 Why, I'm so pitiful, when you see my creation?
02:38 No, no, not really.
02:39 You don't actually have to be.
02:41 I don't have to be super good?
02:43 Can I just be a regular housewife or somebody who just loves to bake?
02:46 Yes, definitely.
02:47 OK.
02:47 You know, you can be like an ordinary person, or even if you're just someone who just wants
02:52 to attend it, yes, you may.
02:53 Because actually, that's the reason why I'm there.
02:55 Yes.
02:55 You know, it's because I'll be there to guide them.
02:59 Yeah.
02:59 Like, from start to finish.
03:02 So, yeah, I don't want them to feel intimidated.
03:05 So, like I said, everyone can join.
03:08 Beginners, if you have beginner skill level, intermediate or advanced.
03:12 Or just the love.
03:12 Or just the love and appreciation.
03:14 As long as you have the passion to learn, that's what's important.
03:17 Because if you have the passion, then you can actually do it.
03:20 OK, so what do you hope that your attendees will be able to take home, aside from the
03:26 cake, or aside from their creation, will they take home, you know, after taking your workshops?
03:31 What are the skills that you hope that they will...
03:33 Definitely all the learnings.
03:35 You know, the foundation.
03:36 The basics of, first of all, how to sculpt cakes.
03:40 Second, how to paint on an edible surface.
03:43 Because definitely painting on an edible surface is definitely different from painting on canvas
03:48 or a piece of paper.
03:49 So you have to know the basics of it.
03:52 You know, and once you have all the basics, the foundation, the possibilities are endless.
03:57 Yes.
03:57 And I don't need to be a painter, or I don't need to have...
04:00 No, not really.
04:02 Yep.
04:02 Because I'll be doing everything.
04:04 I'll be sketching, you know, I'll be doing everything, like step by step.
04:09 And then I will let the students, like, you know, copy what I'm doing.
04:13 Okay.
04:13 And that way, we would come up with the same results.
04:17 And of course, like everything else, practice makes perfect.
04:19 I mean, you can't expect to be like you.
04:22 I know.
04:22 You know, after just one day, how long did it take you to be where you're at now?
04:26 How many years, 10,000 hours did you put in?
04:28 It took me a very long time, because I started doing artworks at the age of four.
04:35 Actually, three.
04:36 That's what my mom said.
04:37 Because you know how kids start to doodle.
04:39 Yeah.
04:39 And instead of having toys, my mom told me that I would ask her for pencils, crayons,
04:46 and a piece of paper, and that would already make me happy.
04:49 So it really pays to start young.
04:51 You brought samples of your...
04:52 So we can show...
04:54 Yes, I did.
04:55 Oh, that one.
04:56 Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
04:57 So we have here as well, you made some cookies.
05:00 Yes.
05:01 It's a hand-painted cookie.
05:02 Take a look at that.
05:03 I don't know if you can see it there.
05:05 So yeah, that's a hand-painted cookie.
05:06 Everything is hand-painted.
05:07 Everything is edible.
05:09 I used edible gel for it.
05:11 That's great, right?
05:12 Yeah, there's another one, but this one is green.
05:14 Wonderful.
05:14 Okay, so what's next for you?
05:17 You mentioned when we had you with Paolo via Zoom that you wanted to put up your business.
05:24 And where are we at on that now?
05:26 Well, honestly, everything is so uncertain.
05:28 I'll be going back to the US in January.
05:32 Everything is so uncertain, honestly.
05:34 But one thing for sure is that I'll be concentrating on...
05:39 My focus is now doing what I love to do, and that is cake decorating.
05:44 And I actually have an upcoming class as well in March in New York.
05:49 So it's a cake show in New York City.
05:53 So I'll be having a cake class.
05:54 And hopefully, I'm crossing my fingers, a brand collaboration.
05:59 Wonderful.
05:59 So I'm crossing my fingers for that one.
06:00 Lots of beautiful things happening for you, just because you decided to say yes when you thought you would say no.
06:07 Mico, thank you so much for joining us here in New Day, and all the best to you.
06:10 Thank you so much, Ms. Christine.
