Working with 15 health centres in 30 villages across Ladakh Mountain Homestays has developed a real-time health monitoring system, DEMETRA, for travellers and local communities, with strong privacy measures. Already pilot-tested, this scalable app enables travellers to receive current information on the health situation in the villages they are travelling to and enables local communities to health check their visitors. It also bolsters healthcare systems in remote locations, reducing the community’s need to travel to health centres. Eventually, the team hopes to also monitor the health of the environment or sustainability indicators. Mountain Homestays are also installing solar power and critical care equipment at local health centres.

00:02 - When Parash shared the concept of destination monitoring
00:08 and travel health system with me
00:10 almost a couple of months back,
00:12 I was spellbound to hear something like this,
00:15 because I could not imagine having a technology like this
00:18 in Ladakh.
00:20 So Demetra can definitely benefit the locals
00:26 as well as travels hugely,
00:27 because as I just mentioned,
00:30 that Ladakh is spread across 54,000 kilometers.
00:33 So you can just imagine travel and locals,
00:37 the population sparsely spread across such a huge area.
00:42 So when travelers go to these parts of Ladakh,
00:47 and then when they stay in some of the remote places
00:51 without where there's no communication as such, even today.
00:55 So this monitoring system can be a game changer
01:00 as well as a lifesaver,
01:02 because just by basic sensors,
01:07 putting the sensors on your body,
01:08 you can immediately, within minutes,
01:11 you can monitor someone's health.
01:14 So it will not just benefit the travel,
01:16 but also the villager or the homestay owner
01:21 to know the health conditions of that person,
01:24 so he can immediately inform
01:27 the nearest healthcare center.
01:30 Because now, post-COVID,
01:32 the way the pattern we are living,
01:35 the way we are traveling has completely changed.
01:38 So having a high-tech system like this
01:42 can definitely be a huge,
01:44 it will give a huge boost to all,
01:48 following the COVID protocols and safety measures.
01:51 (gentle music)
01:53 Honestly, I feel that not just travelers
01:59 or a hotel or a homestay owner,
02:01 I think every house owner now should have a technology
02:05 like this at their disposal.
