Here’s the winner of the silver award for Sustainable Leadership: Small Local Stays: Homestays - The Retreat

A former tea estate, one of the firsts in India, The Retreat in Bhimtal is a charming example of celebrating the ‘home’ in the word homestay. Guests are welcomed to step back in time at this heritage estate, and encouraged to go on nature trails nearby.

00:09 At the retreat, Bheem Tal, we keep up our family tradition of living within our jungle environment
00:16 rather than stamping our presence on it.
00:19 There are no fences or rows of lights outside.
00:22 The undergrowth and trees come right up close
00:25 and wild animals and birds freely come up to the house.
00:28 We fight forest fires, maintain, plant and protect the forest around us,
00:33 participate in advocacy by groups protecting the environment here.
00:37 We engage with the villagers on the former tea estate, both personally and in the community.
00:42 This includes guided walks and visits to family homes where the payments go directly to the people.
00:47 This old 160-year-old bungalow is maintained in its original condition,
00:52 comfortable but consciously not improved, modernized or luxurious,
00:56 which come at a price to the environment.
00:58 A stay at the retreat is a living example of how to successfully live a simpler,
01:03 gracious life of less consumption while having a great time.
