Welcome to Atomun - TeleSUR's program on science and technology in Latin America, focusing on the human side of science and technology at the service of progress. Today our host Danny Perez tells us that Solar Impulse II, an innovative airplane powered by solar energy is now on the second leg of its journey around the world with the aim of fostering the use of renewable energies. The plane that uses no fuel was designed and assembled in Switzerland and is covered with over 17,000 solar cells. It has a top speed of 87 miles per hour and is expected to complete its voyage in 25 days, ending up in Abu-Dhabi in July. This week we’re also taking a look at the movie Gravity, directed by Alfonso Cuaron, with a script by his son Jason Cuaron. It’s the story of a medical engineer and an astronaut engaged in a fight for survival after a catastrophe destroys their shuttle and leaves them adrift in orbit. The film with its amazing images of the Earth and the reflection of the Sun deals with the potential risk of collisions of space junk and is both truthful to scientific laws and complies with many laws of physics, unlike classics such as 2001: A Space Odyssey. Then it’s back to earth with Part II of the feature, How to Protect Children From Technology. Danny Perez offers a long list of attractive software, special search engines and internet sites designed especially for kids. And today’s edition of Atomun ends with a tribute to Yuri Gargarin, who on April 12, 1961, was the first man to venture out into space. teleSUR
