00:00Welcome back to Farm in the South and now we are heading to La Guaira where the women of Caravalleda
00:18Fisheries Cooperative are breaking all the rules. Through the Waving Nets program they process
00:24FESH create value-added products and consolidate a collective brand that allows them to market
00:30their products, build community and continue to empower themselves. Our correspondent Alvaro Fragua
00:36with the details. The work begins at sea but it continues on land. There the women of the Caravalleda
00:44Fishermen's and Fisher Women's Council receive all kinds of catches and transform them into
00:49different products for national and international consumption. Rosemary tells us about the various
00:54ways of preparing tuna. Tuna can be prepared in many ways in salads as an antipasto, stewed, shredded,
01:02however you like it. Grilled, it depends. It's a versatile food that can be used in anything,
01:07in anything. With the support of the government this work has enabled them to organize around
01:12the Kunpa collective brand which already has 25 products. Not only do they promote the local
01:17market but they also seek to cross borders. Right now we have about 25 products that are
01:27already recognized by the collective brand which is Kunpa and that helps us to market them in a car
01:32market and for it to be exported is our great dream. Beyond production, this space also means
01:38independence and dignity for the women of the community. It's feeling like a person who is,
01:46at least, how can I put it? At home you're a decoration, a decoration that cooks. Not here,
01:52here you come to work and, as well as working, you have extra money in your pocket.
01:58At sea, reality is also marked by external aggression. Despite US warships and threats,
02:04fishermen and fisherwomen insist on their resilience and perseverance.
02:14We will continue to fish, we will continue to go out against all odds, we will not stop,
02:20we are producing, we have awareness. The fishing sector today is incredibly organized,
02:27and that has influenced a lot in everything that has to do with production. But more than that,
02:32we are not afraid. This project not only ensures protein-rich food for schools,
02:37health centers, and communities, but also sends a message of organization and empowerment to other
02:42women in the country. Well, I tell those women to empower themselves, to be well empowered,
02:48because this work is not just for men. Women also have the right to get on a boat, go out and fish,
02:53because we are empowering women, if they do it, we do it too, and sometimes we do it even better.
02:58Between nets and pots, fisherwomen show that the sea is not just a man's world,
03:02their work is an example of a people that produces, resists, and empowers itself.
