Dance and Tradition. Dance is perhaps the cultural expression most closely associated with Latin America. In today's program we start in Mexico, with Jorocho dance and music, from the State of Veracruz. Its maximum expression is in the fandango festival, featuring music, dance, and poetry. A new generation is upholding and revitalizing this genre, whose roots go back to the Spanish colonial period. Then its on to El Salvador, with the Moros and Cristianos dance. Although it originally commemorated the defeat of the Muslim presence in Spain, it was adapted by the indigenous population to reflect their struggle against the Spanish conquistadores. And finally, to Bolivia for a look at the Festival of the Cross, a ritual celebration of the Quechuas, which began before the Spanish conquest and is being lost over time. teleSUR
