00:00Hello and welcome to the Dark Mystery Lounge.
00:03Let's continue Halloween story time with another doll that proved to be far more sinister than Robert the Doll was.
00:10I'm talking about Annabelle.
00:13If you've watched the movies based on her, you know that she wreaked havoc on anyone who dared to disrespect her.
00:20Whether or not you believe in her story is still pretty creepy and interesting.
00:24Let's get started.
00:30The year was 1970.
00:32A student nurse named Donna was given a large Raggedy Ann doll as a present for her birthday by her mother.
00:39With its red yarn hair, black button eyes, and a soft smile on her face,
00:45she was thrilled with the doll and thought it would make a cute accessory to her apartment,
00:49which she shared with her roommate, Angie, also a student nurse.
00:54At first, the doll was placed on the couch, greeting visitors as they walked into the apartment.
00:58It didn't take long for the girls to notice that something wasn't right with the doll.
01:04It seems that the doll would move on her own accord.
01:08Donna would sit her on the living room sofa before leaving work,
01:11only to come home in the afternoon and find her in the bedroom with the door shut.
01:17Donna and Angie then started to find notes left throughout the apartment reading,
01:22Help Me.
01:22According to the girls, the notes were written on parchment paper,
01:26which they didn't even keep in their own home.
01:29Donna discovered what appeared to be blood drops on the doll's hands and chest.
01:35Angie's boyfriend, only known as Lou,
01:38was in the apartment one afternoon while Donna was out
01:41and heard rustling in her room as if someone had broken in.
01:45He went to investigate and found no signs of forced entry,
01:49but found the doll lying face down on the ground.
01:53He was on his way out of the bedroom when suddenly,
01:56he felt searing pain on his chest that was so bad he almost fell to his knees.
02:02He looked down at his chest to find bloody claw marks running across it.
02:07Two days later, they vanished without a trace.
02:10Following Lou's traumatic experience,
02:13the women invited a medium over to help solve their seemingly paranormal problem.
02:19The medium held a seance and told the women that the doll
02:22was inhabited by a spirit of a deceased seven-year-old girl named Annabelle Higgins,
02:28whose body had been found years earlier on the site
02:31where their apartment building had been built.
02:34The medium claimed that the spirit was benevolent
02:37and simply wanted to be loved and cared for.
02:40The two young nurses felt bad for the spirit
02:43and consented to allow her to take up permanent residence in the doll,
02:48which would turn out to be a big mistake.
02:51Eventually, in an attempt to rid their home of the Annabelle doll's spirit,
02:56Donna and Angie called on an Episcopal priest known as Father Hagen.
03:01Hagen contacted his superior, Father Cook,
03:04who alerted demonologists and paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren.
03:10They reached out to the women and offered their help
03:13and clarified what was possessing this seemingly innocent doll.
03:17As far as Ed and Lorraine Warren were concerned,
03:20the two young ladies' trouble started when they began believing that the doll deserved their sympathy.
03:25The Warrens believed that there was actually a demonic force in search of a human host within Annabelle
03:32and not a benevolent soul.
03:35The Warrens' account of the case states,
03:37Quote,
03:39Spirits do not possess inanimate objects like houses or toys.
03:43They possess people.
03:45An inhuman spirit can attach itself to a place or object,
03:49and this is what occurred in the Annabelle case.
03:53This spirit manipulated the doll
03:54and created the illusion of it being alive in order to get recognition.
03:59Truly, the spirit was not looking to stay attached to the doll.
04:03It was looking to possess a human host.
04:06Unquote.
04:07If they would have waited just a few more weeks,
04:10the demons would have hurt or killed one or both of the young ladies
04:14or possessed one of them.
04:16At that time, the demon was in an infestation stage
04:20and was just waiting for the perfect time.
04:22The Warrens asked Father Cook to perform an exorcism of the home.
04:28This just made things worse.
04:30Donna asked the Warrens to take Annabelle with them,
04:33which they agreed.
04:34The Warrens buckled Annabelle into the backseat of their car
04:38and vowed not to take the highway
04:40in case she had some kind of accident-causing power
04:43over them and their vehicle.
04:45However, even the safer back roads
04:48proved too risky for the couple.
04:51On their way home,
04:52Lorraine claimed that the brakes either stalled
04:55or failed several times,
04:57resulting in near-disastrous crashes.
05:00Lorraine claimed that as soon as Ed pulled the holy water
05:03from his bag and doused the doll with it,
05:06the problem with the brakes disappeared.
05:08Upon arriving home,
05:10Ed and Lorraine placed the doll in Ed's study.
05:13There, they reported the doll levitated
05:15and moved about the house.
05:18Even when placed in the locked office in the outer building,
05:21the Warrens claimed that she would turn up later inside the house.
05:25They had enough of Annabelle's antics
05:27and decided to lock her up for good.
05:30They had a specially made glass and wood case constructed,
05:34upon which they inscribed the Lord's Prayer
05:36and St. Michael's Prayer.
05:38For the rest of his life,
05:41Ed would periodically say a binding prayer over the case,
05:45ensuring that the sinister spirit and the doll remained good and trapped.
05:49Even though she was locked up
05:51and only moved slightly on occasions throughout the years,
05:54it seemed like Annabelle wasn't done playing her evil tricks.
05:59A priest who was visiting the Warrens Museum
06:01picked up Annabelle and discounted her demonic abilities.
06:06Ed warned the priest about mocking Annabelle's demonic power,
06:10but the young priest lapped him off.
06:12On his way home,
06:14the priest was involved in a near-fatal crash
06:16that had totaled his new car.
06:18He claimed to have seen Annabelle in his rear-view mirror
06:21just before the accident.
06:24Years later,
06:25another visitor rapped on the glass
06:27of the Annabelle doll's case
06:29and laughed at how silly people were to believe in her.
06:33On his way home,
06:34he reportedly lost control of his motorcycle
06:37and crashed headlong into a tree.
06:39He was killed instantly,
06:41and his girlfriend just barely survived.
06:44She claimed at the time of the accident,
06:47the couple had been laughing about Annabelle the doll.
06:49Annabelle sits in the Warrens Occult Museum
06:52in Monroe, Connecticut,
06:54with a sign that reads,
06:56Warning,
06:57Positively Do Not Open.
07:00Ed passed away in 2006,
07:03and Lorraine passed away in 2019.
07:05The museum was passed to her daughter and son-in-law,
07:09but unfortunately,
07:10is permanently closed due to zoning issues.
07:13There was a rumor that Annabelle had escaped in 2020,
07:16but this proved to be false.
07:19Who would have guessed
07:20that a seemingly normal-looking raggedy Ann doll
07:23would cause so much havoc?
07:25I know the museum is closed,
07:27but if you had a chance,
07:28would you visit Annabelle?
07:30Do you think the story is true?
