Grigori Rasputin was a Russian mystic and holy man. He is best-known for having
befriended the imperial family of Nicholas II, the last Emperor of Russia, through
whom he gained considerable influence in the final years of the Russian Empire.

00:01Welcome to the Dark Mystery Lounge. Today we talk about one of the most
00:07mysterious men in history. Today we talk about Gregory Rasputin. Born in Russia
00:16in January 21st, 1869 to a poor family, Rasputin had a pretty normal life until
00:25he turned 30 when he went through a religious awakening and he became a
00:31wandering, self-proclaimed priest.
00:38Rasputin belonged to a mysterious cult where they had strange rituals, drinking
00:44and orgies. Rasputin became popular society figure in St. Petersburg in Russia
00:51by 1906 after becoming friends with King Nicholas II and his family.
01:01But it all started to go wrong when Queen Alexandra started seeing him as a
01:07prophet when he started healing people from their illnesses and especially her
01:14son Alexei. It was said that he also was able to heal and control people by
01:22hypnotizing them, just simply by looking through their eyes. Over the years, Rasputin
01:31influence increased over the royal family and he interfered in their political
01:36decisions. On July 12, 1914, a woman stabbed Rasputin in his stomach and attempted
01:47to kill him because she claimed he was the Antichrist. But she was later found
01:53insane and was sent to an asylum for her crime.
01:58In 1916 and during World War I, the Russian army was not doing too good and many believed
02:09Rasputin influence over the royal family was a big reason why.
02:17So a group of Russian nobles decided they need to get rid of him and they invited
02:23Rasputin to a small party at the royal palace on December 29, 1916.
02:33Once Rasputin entered the palace, he was offered tea and cake that had been
02:38laced with cyanide, enough to kill four men, but it seems to have no effect on him.
02:45So they decided to give him wine, placed with more cyanide and after drinking three glasses
02:55of it, again, nothing happened to him.
03:02So one of the Russian nobles shot him in the schist with a revolver.
03:07Rasputin fell on the floor and they thought he was dead.
03:12But after a while Rasputin got up and he started to attack them.
03:20So they shot him again, two more times.
03:24One more time in the forehead and one more time in the schist.
03:28Then they started to beat his head with a heavy object multiple times.
03:33Then they dragged his body and threw him into a freezing river.
03:43Just to be surprised that he was still alive and he tried to swim in the freezing cold water.
03:51But he was taken by the current.
03:54On January 1st, 1917, Rasputin's dead body was found covered in ice.
04:05The official autopsy showed no trace of cyanide in his body and that he didn't actually die from the bullets, but he drowned.
04:15He was buried on January 2nd, 1917, in a local church and the ceremony was attended by the royal family.
04:27So what do you think?
04:30Was Rasputin a strange man with supernatural powers?
04:35Or was he a normal man that his story was overhyped?
