00:00Hello and welcome to the Dark Mystery Lounge. Today we are going to have Halloween story time.
00:05Our first story for this month is an over 90 year old Mexican urban legend of La Pascualita.
00:11So sit back, relax, and enjoy the story.
00:17Let's take a trip back to March of 1930 to a bridal shop called La Popular in Chihuahua, Mexico.
00:23A new mannequin is put on display in a beautiful classic gown to start the spring season.
00:28Usually the more realistic a mannequin looks, the more customers the store attracts.
00:33But at closer inspection in the display window, people began to notice that this mannequin looks like the daughter of the shop's owner, Pascuala Esparza.
00:42The daughter's name has been lost to time, but La Pascualita, or Little Pascuala, died on her wedding day after being bitten by a black widow spider.
00:51Rumors spread quickly that maybe La Pascualita is not a dummy, but a perfectly preserved corpse.
00:57Did the Esparza family hire an expert embalmer to preserve her?
01:01Perhaps this was their way of hanging on to their beloved daughter that they love so much?
01:06At first, people were angry at the shop owner, sending them letters of disapproval.
01:11By the time Pascuala Esparza tried to deny that she is not a corpse, it was already too late.
01:17People would come by the shop window to stare at this supposed corpse bride,
01:21only to find that La Pascualita was staring back at them, then running away in fear.
01:26Some say that at night, she moves around on the shop floor once it's closed.
01:30The thing that convinces everyone that she's real, besides her real hair, glass eyes, and thick eyelashes, is her hands.
01:38They are so perfectly detailed, with all the little wrinkles and creases, even the nails in nail beds are extremely realistic.
01:44Some of the employees refused to dress her and claimed that her eyes would follow them around the shop as they worked.
01:50Her clothes were changed twice a week behind heavy curtains to preserve her modesty.
01:54She always dressed in a classic bridal gown from neck to feet.
01:58One employee, Sonia Berziaga, said,
02:00There were even rumors that a French magician would come by the shop every night to bring her to life and take her out on the town, only to bring her back just before dawn.
02:19With all these rumors floating and more people flocking to see this Chihuahua legend, business was good.
02:25Until one day, only a few years ago, La Pascualita was replaced with another mannequin, which is still beautiful, but obviously fake.
02:33Lots of people were angry, leaving negative Google reviews demanding that they bring back La Pascualita.
02:39After all, that was the only reason why some people would flock to Chihuahua was to see her.
02:44La Pascualita is renovating the building, and La Pascualita was sent to Mexico City.
02:49How long she will be there, we really don't know, but hopefully one day she will return to her rightful place.
02:55So what do you think? Is she real? Or is she just an expertly crapped mannequin?
