Transcript
00:00It's People Station V103. It's another exclusive. Big Glow is in the building.
00:04Hey.
00:05Man, the Glowverse.
00:06The Glowverse.
00:07This is genius.
00:08Thank you. I appreciate that.
00:10Now, this is like really genius.
00:12To form a whole community around glam for females?
00:16Yes. I think the biggest part I love that it's for both sides. It's for the customers and the breeder
00:24professionals.
00:25Now, is this an app that you own yourself?
00:27Yes.
00:28Yes. So, you might be ready to get you some of that Niles money.
00:32Hey, I ain't mad at it.
00:34You took it to Silicon Valley yet?
00:36No.
00:37No, this is going to be big for the culture.
00:39Okay, okay.
00:40Congratulations on that. But also, congratulations on your second record with the homie, Kurt Franklin.
00:46All into Fort Worth, Texas, to Memphis, to the eighth.
00:49Yeah. You from Fort Worth?
00:51No, I know he's from out there.
00:52Uh-huh, yeah. Yeah.
00:54How was it working with Kurt?
00:56It was great. He's so graceful. He's so welcoming. A beautiful person.
01:00Oh, he's definitely down to earth.
01:02Mm-hmm, super.
01:03Always, you know, not too extra.
01:06Yeah.
01:07A lot of people be too extra in the game.
01:09Yeah, nah, he, he, he, that's my peoples.
01:13The game has been really good to glow.
01:16Mm-hmm.
01:16Not the game, because it's not a game.
01:18Mm-hmm.
01:18Like, to watch you grow from a, a, a mixtape song, from a basement, from a house to where you
01:26are now, it's crazy.
01:29Now, I know a lot of people's trying to get on you.
01:31Everybody wanted money from you.
01:32Everybody's trying to get money from you.
01:33For people getting into the industry, explain to them how important it is to understand financial literacy.
01:39Just because you're making some money don't mean you got a lot of money just to give away.
01:44Right.
01:45You can lose it the same way you get it.
01:47And, you know, I'll say, like, and, like, if you're not a hustler and constantly making the money back, you
01:53know what I'm saying, it's easy to, you can get this certain amount of money one day.
01:57You got to pay taxes, you know what I'm saying, and you just got to be small with your money.
02:01I ain't never giving out no money.
02:02At 37 to 40 percent, that's, you already got a big business partner.
02:06But, you know, I do give, I ain't just, I ain't going to say I'm not giving out money because
02:12I do, like, I'm a generous person.
02:14You're a giver.
02:14Yeah, because I look, because God blessed me with it, and so I do love giving back, but I'm just
02:19not, like, giving it to you because you're not working, and you know what I'm saying?
02:24No.
02:24But it's very important for younger people to understand financial literacy.
02:28Exactly.
02:28You got to put enough money away.
02:30You got to save.
02:31That money can make money to take care of you just in case.
02:35I'm a big believer in making money in your sleep, so.
02:39Got to.
02:39Got to let the money make money.
02:40Mm-hmm.
02:41Like I said, and this Glowverse is going to be a big part of that.
02:44Yes.
02:44I mean, just imagine how many young ladies or how many stylists, male and female, around the country who can
02:50tap into this, who may get a chance to do somebody's hair or somebody's makeup or somebody's nails when they're
02:55out on tour.
02:55Right.
02:56And they just happened to be in their city, and they never, ever would have had that shot.
03:00Mm-hmm.
03:00Because there are a lot of stylists on the scene that get a chance to work with a lot of
03:04major artists that came from small towns, that came from situations, but they just was blessed to be in the
03:09right place at the right time.
03:11Exactly.
03:11When things happen, but a lot of people don't have those opportunities.
03:14They don't.
03:15Glowverse is going to make that happen.
03:16Glowverse is going to make it happen.
03:17I know this is just the beginning, but what are your thoughts and expectations on how far you think the
03:24Glowverse can grow?
03:26My expectations is for Glowverse to be the biggest on-demand glam app and just the biggest app anyway.
03:34You know, I'm always aiming for the stars, so I want it to be the biggest.
03:38Now, from working in a Walmart to sneaking in a Walmart, trying to shop, what goes through your head when
03:48you think about the days when you were working on a job and the days where you are right now?
03:52It's so crazy because I just went to Walmart like a week ago, and I was telling my people, I'm
03:58like, I really used to work here.
04:01Like, I miss working here.
04:01I said, I don't miss it, but I do miss it.
04:03Like, it's just like, I love, Walmart was my favorite still growing up, and when I was working there, I
04:08was so happy.
04:09Like, that was my favorite job, and so I'd be going around, like, I'd be acting like I know where
04:13everything is still.
04:15They'd be like, you swear you worked here.
04:17I'm like, I did.
04:17Like, I know where this stuff is.
04:19Like, every time I go in there, I act like I still work there.
04:21But you appreciate that experience.
04:23Yes, I do.
04:23That experience.
04:24How important was that experience for you to get to where you are now?
04:29You know, it built character.
04:31You know what I'm saying?
04:32It built the hustler and the character, so I appreciate it.
04:36I appreciate all my jobs.
04:37A lot of artists actually think that they're so talented and they're so good that they don't need a job.
04:44They don't understand sometimes these jobs and being in certain situations will actually lead you to other places
04:51and develop that character that you're going to need once you get to where you're trying to go.
04:55Exactly.
04:56It's not just about how talented you are.
04:57Everybody has a talent.
04:59Yeah.
04:59But building that character is the catalyst to make sure that talent really goes to the next level.
05:05Exactly.
05:07So a day in the life of Glorilla.
05:09Take us through a day.
05:10A day in the life with me.
05:12Big glow.
05:13I wake up.
05:15My alarm clock wakes me up.
05:16I go brush my teeth, wash my face.
05:19I go downstairs.
05:20I read my book for 20 minutes.
05:23I eat.
05:25I go to the gym.
05:26No, well, I eat.
05:27And as I'm eating, I go on my Bible out, listen to the five-minute scripture.
05:32And then I go to the gym, come back from the gym.
05:35I take a shower.
05:36Then I check emails.
05:39Then I go to the studio.
05:40And then I come back.
05:41Wow.
05:42Mm-hmm.
05:43All in the day's work.
05:44All in the day.
05:45Now, you took us through the Walmart.
05:46You took us through the day in the life.
05:48Now, take us through Memphis.
05:52What you want to know about it?
05:53I mean, it's a great city.
05:56So I know it gets a lot of negative publicity like a lot of other cities because people who are
06:01not from there, you know,
06:02they don't really understand what's going on.
06:04So they only pay attention to the fake news.
06:07Mm-hmm.
06:08So take us through Memphis, like the food and the destinations and pro sports.
06:15Yeah.
06:16Memphis got – we have a lot of great food.
06:18I'm going to stand on that hill that Memphis got the best food.
06:21And, you know, a lot of the best food come from somebody, mama or grandma's kitchen.
06:26You know what I'm saying?
06:27I would say we got a lot of good music.
06:30Like, we got a different sound.
06:31Like, when you hear Memphis music, it just gets you in that mood.
06:35Like, you're just going to bounce your shoulders.
06:38I think culturally Memphis is a great place.
06:41You know what I'm saying?
06:42And you got, like, a lot of – the Silver Rice Museum, of course.
06:47And Memphis is just Memphis.
06:49You got to know Memphis to love Memphis.
06:52My boy Barbecue, a.k.a. Mr. Polley, he got some of that good barbecue in Memphis.
06:56I think it was his dad's spot.
06:57He inherited it.
06:58Mm-hmm.
06:59It's a lot of good barbecue in Memphis.
07:00A lot of good barbecue?
07:01Mm-hmm.
07:03I think one of my favorite attractions is how Johnny Mars turned the old basketball arena
07:08into a bad pro shop.
07:10Oh, yeah, the pyramid.
07:11Yeah, the pyramid is crazy.
07:13Yeah.
07:13I stayed in there a few nights.
07:14I never – I went to the pyramid one time, and that was crazy.
07:19I had never been there.
07:20They said that was the old gym.
07:21And I had – I liked it.
07:23I had never been there before, but it's pretty cool.
07:26They got restaurants, everything in there.
07:27A hotel.
07:28Sure do.
07:28I didn't even know it was a hotel until I went there.
07:31What do they call it, the lodge?
07:33I don't know.
07:36Now, I heard some information about how you felt about Rihanna and Beyonce,
07:43how you really love Rihanna and Beyonce.
07:45Who else is on that list of icons in the eyes of Glorilla?
07:50Whitney Houston.
07:51Whitney?
07:51Whitney Houston.
07:53Of course, Mike Jack.
07:54That – I would say I do love Celine Dion, Mariah Carey.
08:08Let me see.
08:09It's a lot of greats.
08:11It's a lot of greats.
08:12Them's some of my favorites, though.
08:14Now, Salt from Salt and Pepper sat down with our very own Danny B,
08:19and she was talking about you collaborating with Kurt Franklin
08:22and how she got – I think she did a song with him like 30 years ago,
08:26and she got a lot of flack from being a part of the song by her being a rapper.
08:30How important is it for people to stop being so narrow-minded about
08:34because you make street music, that's the only thing you're supposed to do?
08:38I mean, I just think, like, everything people do throughout their day ain't holy.
08:44So you can't be mad because I'm rapping and then I give God glory
08:48when I'm pretty sure nobody is without sin.
08:51Nobody is perfect.
08:52You do something within your day that's not perfect.
08:57And so I just think the judgment should calm down.
09:00Got to calm down.
09:01Yeah.
09:02A lot of people just not conscious of what they be saying,
09:04really what they be thinking.
09:05Exactly.
09:06Because I can see, like, people talking about how Kurt Franklin
09:09rapping on the shawty low beat, which is not the shawty low beat.
09:13It's actually the Mandrell's beat.
09:14Mm-hmm.
09:15The whole sample came from another song.
09:18Exactly.
09:18So it's like he was smart enough to take it and use it
09:21and just really bridge another gap.
09:24Right.
09:24He's probably going to bring some people into spiritual music
09:27who may not have been exposed, but the negativity of it is just so crazy.
09:31Mm-hmm.
09:31I can't believe it.
09:32I can't believe, like, a lot of people from God is talking about people
09:36worshiping God.
09:37Like, that'd be the wild part to me.
09:39Do you think it's wilder with social media, like,
09:41people having a platform and a voice to be able to voice their worthless
09:45opinions?
09:46It's all crazy.
09:47But they did it 30 years ago, too, before social media.
09:50So I think they're going to do it regardless, but, yeah.
09:54New album.
09:55New album.
09:56On the way?
09:57Coming soon.
09:58Real soon.
09:59Soon.
10:02End of the year?
10:03Fourth quarter?
10:03No, I'm not getting Mariah Carey away.
10:05What?
10:06No, I'm not getting her away.
10:07Uh-oh.
10:08She got it.
10:09She got it.
10:10She got it.
10:10You're going to let her have a Christmas time?
10:11Yeah.
10:13This her month.
10:13Maybe we'll do a remix to Mariah Carey's Christmas song and put a
10:17glow verse on it.
10:19Ooh, a glow verse.
10:20Hey.
10:22And launch it on the app.
10:24Right.
10:26Put some Christmas decorations on it.
10:28Mm-hmm.
10:29Throw some Ds on it.
10:31Don't play with it.
10:33I want to thank you for coming by today.
10:35For sure.
10:35Thank you for having me.
10:36Like I said, Memphis is a special place to the culture of music.
10:43Yeah.
10:44And for you to be from Memphis, like I said, from a large family, and to be,
10:49have the story that you have in music.
10:52How does it really feel to you?
10:55Like how surreal is it?
10:56It's still surreal every day.
10:59Every time something big come, I can't believe it.
11:01But I just know it's coming from God.
11:02But I be like, wow, like me?
11:04It's coming to me?
11:06Big glow?
11:07Hey.
11:09What's the song say?
11:10Lord, times are hard.
11:12Life is hard.
11:13Big glow is hard.
11:13Big glow is hard.
11:15Hey.
11:16The glow verse is hard.
11:18The glow verse is hard.
11:19The glow verse is hard.
11:21This is really genius.
11:22Like this might be one of the biggest things in hip hop for females.
11:26And I was going to ask you about that too.
11:27Like being a female rapper right before you, Sexy, and Megan, and Cardi B,
11:35and all you guys came along.
11:36It was hard for a female rapper.
11:38We couldn't get a female rapper.
11:40Mm-hmm.
11:41And now it's crazy.
11:43Yeah.
11:43I mean, I feel like y'all had a good era though with Left Eye and Lil' Kim and Eve
11:48now.
11:48I mean, but after that, like there was a, it was like a drought.
11:51We had Nicki.
11:53Who else?
11:54That was it.
11:55But she was doing a lot of good music.
11:56So like she was doing good by herself.
11:59She trapped it out too.
12:00Yeah.
12:01You know when she talk about Be Me Up Scotty?
12:02You know who Scotty is?
12:03Who Scotty is?
12:04Scotty was the engineer at Hot Beats right down the street.
12:07By the gas station on 14th Street.
12:09The little building next door.
12:12Mm-hmm.
12:13That's where Kadife took Static Major to take Lil' Wayne, the lollipop song.
12:20Yeah.
12:20That's where that happened.
12:21That's where Drake did his first mixtape.
12:24That's where Nicki recorded all this, all her music at.
12:26That's hard.
12:27So, but it was a drought for a long time.
12:29So we thankful for you and the whole, all the females that's getting busy right now.
12:35Because it was hard for a long time.
12:37Yeah.
12:38You know what I'm saying?
12:38It was super hard.
12:39Like, I think you guys are the reason why Lauryn Hill has came outside.
12:44Mm-hmm.
12:44Like, because she wouldn't come outside for a minute.
12:46Yeah.
12:47Like, no amount of money, no agreement.
12:50It wasn't about, I didn't want to do it.
12:52But now that I think the female scene has gotten so big, I think you guys brought her outside.
12:57Yeah.
12:58Love Lauryn Hill.
12:59We love Big Glow.
13:01Thank y'all.
13:02Love y'all too.
13:02Hey, man.
13:03Thanks for being authentic and being yourself.
13:07Thanks.
13:07Because I know probably growing up, people probably used to tease you about your accent
13:11and the way you talk in other places, not understanding that was going to be your superpower.
13:16You know, I didn't leave Memphis until I was a grown person.
13:19And so, like, I didn't, I went to, I came out here to Atlanta like twice before I blew up.
13:23And that's the only place I had ever been.
13:25So when I started traveling and everybody didn't know what the hell I was talking about,
13:28I thought they was faking.
13:30I'm like, come on now.
13:31Like, I'm thinking I talk so regular.
13:33And then everybody, every city I'm going to ask me what I'm talking about, I'm like, oh, wow, we really
13:37got an accent.
13:38Oh, yeah.
13:38Memphis got some words now.
13:39I didn't understand we had an accent until I left.
13:42I swear.
13:42The first one that threw me, that really threw me was Yo Gotti with that music.
13:47It sounds so regular to me.
13:50I swear it do.
13:51Big Glow and the CMG family.
13:52How's the CMG family?
13:54We doing good.
13:55We doing good.
13:56You're going crazy.
13:57Yeah, thank you.
13:58Always working.
13:59Well, let's get it.
14:00Thanks for stopping through the People Station, V-103.
14:02We're looking forward to this new music.
14:03And all the ladies, everybody who's into the glam, we're looking forward to Glowverse.
14:08Yes.
14:09Like she said, get signed up.
14:10Set up your page.
14:12Go to glowverse.co, sign up, and become a glam professional or a customer either way, and into the Glowverse.
14:20Are you going to take this public?
14:21Are you going to IPO it?
14:22Yeah, most definitely.
14:25Mm-hmm.
14:26This might be the big one.
14:28Big Glow.
14:29Hey, in the building.
14:31Thank y'all for having me.
14:32And, of course, everybody can follow you at Glowrilla.
14:34Yep.
14:35She turns her social media off sometimes, though.
14:38And follow all the Glowverse at Glowverse.co on all platforms.
14:42Glowverse.co.
14:43Glowverse.co.co on all platforms.
