What happens when you have to look at yourself in the mirror and see who you are? What happens if there are a lot of mirrors? 'Dark Matter,' the Apple TV sci-fi action drama, takes every version of who you may or may not think you are and puts you dead center on the front of yourself. Hailed as one of the best sci-fi novels and celebrating the 10th anniversary of its release this year, 'Dark Matter' is a story about the road not taken. Alongside Joel Edgerton and Jennifer Connelly, Dayo Okeniyi is the one you have to watch out for. His character, Leighton, chases his grand vision of creating a perfect world.

Dayo sat down for a Romeo International Audacy Conversation to share insight into the character and how he was able to separate himself from himself.

00:00Now, I'm going to say this because I know you're a cool dude.
00:04I feel like this is a safe space and we can be honest with each other.
00:07OK, I mean this when I say this.
00:10Don't give me the box.
00:11Give me that box.
00:12I'm Thanos in this whole shit.
00:15I'm the most powerful in every single universe that I can find myself.
00:20I'm going to make myself the most powerful in every last single one.
00:24No judgment for me.
00:25No judgment for me, man.
00:27I might be the same with you on that for sure.
00:30I love Dark Matter from season one when I first got it.
00:33I like binge season one all the way up to like two days.
00:38OK, wow.
00:39The concept of your character, and I don't know how to word this correctly.
00:43I like you, but then I don't like you.
00:46But when the writing is in front of you, you have to split yourself between the same individuals.
00:56Ideally, like how do you balance that in a single series?
01:00Because technically you are playing four or five different versions of yourself.
01:03No, I hear you, man.
01:05I think that's a very astute observation, bro.
01:07Because the truth of the matter is I love playing polarizing characters.
01:13The moment you play a character that people are going back and forth in their soul about and they're like,
01:18oh, do I like this guy?
01:19I don't like that.
01:19You're on to something.
01:21That means the audience is still on their back foot.
01:25They're still trying to figure you out.
01:27And I think that means that we're tapping into the complexity of people, man.
01:32Think about sometimes I like myself, sometimes I don't like myself.
01:36Sometimes I'm like, damn, bro, why do you say that dumb shit, bro?
01:38Why do you say that dumb shit?
01:40You know, sometimes you're like, yeah, I'm the man.
01:41Yeah, I'm him.
01:42And you look in the mirror and you dig yourself up.
01:44So like, to me, I always like playing a character that kind of is, I mean, ultimately speaking, Leighton is
01:50me.
01:50So I should like him equally and not like him equally.
01:54I should be able to hold him accountable for some of the things that he does.
01:57And I should be able to root for him for the things where he wants to be better at himself
02:02with.
02:02And to me, that is what the whole show is wrapped around.
02:06You know, Dark Matter is just wrapped around who would you be if you had made different choices, right?
02:10I guess some would even argue it's who would you be if you had made all the right choices in
02:14life?
02:15And I think people come to find that you might not really necessarily like that version of you that made
02:21all the right choices.
02:22Or you might love that version of you so much that you start to resent who you are.
02:27It's the complicated nature of us in general.
02:30We all sit down and wonder who, man, what if I'd marry that girl or gone to that school or,
02:34you know, all the different things, you know.
02:37So, you know, I think that's just what it is.
02:41And if people are polarized on Leighton in that way, I feel like we're doing the right thing because, you
02:47know, it's not it's never that simple.
02:49You shouldn't just look at a character and go, oh, man, he's all evil or he's all good.
02:52Nobody in this world is all evil. Right. Right.
02:55So, yeah, we love the complexity of that.
02:57But did you find question marks in the different versions of you where you were like, oh, I hope I'm
03:02not that or.
03:03Right. Right. To go back to what you first said, which is, you know, am I going to help the
03:08world at large or am I just going to help my world?
03:11Like, bro, I got it. I got to go to the Jay-Z, the Jay-Z line for that one
03:16where he goes, you know, but there's much bigger issues in the world.
03:19I know. But I first had to take care of the world.
03:21I know. I know. You got to go home with that.
03:24So I say I say that to say Leighton thinks I think on a certain level, not to give too
03:28much away on the story, but I think he's really driven to change the world.
03:31I think he's really, really driven to change the world.
03:33But as the season continues, we peel back the layers on him and then we see what's really driving him.
03:41And then he has to answer that question for himself because there are things from his history, from his past,
03:45from his family that the audience is going to go, oh, whoa.
03:49So that's really what he's trying to fix.
03:53And is he is he being too naive to think he's doing it for the whole world or is he
03:59really being selfish?
04:00That's a question that audiences will get to see.
04:03And that's a question he'll have to try to answer himself over the course of the show.
04:06So, yeah, man, I think I think he's fighting that selfishness.
04:10But if he's being honest, he trying to take care of the world he knows.
