Jordan Schultz reports that Colts wide receiver Josh Downs could bring back a third- or fourth-round pick, with the Steelers, Chiefs and Commanders among the teams to watch. Chris Russell is open to Washington exploring a trade for Downs, but he draws the line at a third-rounder. Chris wouldn’t give up a third-round pick for the receiver, though he’d consider a fourth- or fifth-round selection. Is Downs worth a mid-round investment for the Commanders?

00:00And going back to what we were originally talking about, is they have to operate the commander's brass as if,
00:12A, this season is not over, which it's not, and B, we're going to be here long term.
00:19That's how they have to operate.
00:23And I think for a 32-year-old aging veteran-wide receiver, giving up a third-round pick would be
00:34out of the question.
00:36For a 25-year-old, it might be in question.
00:41I still think it's too much, but, you know, I don't make those decisions.
00:46I'll just tell you what I think.
00:50I will tell you this.
00:52I would rather have downs than IU.
00:56Even if downs cost me something.
00:58Now, would I like it to be a fourth or a fifth-round pick, conditional, whatever?
01:02Sure.
01:04Or if it's a third-round pick, can you do me 20-28, third-round pick style, as opposed to
01:0920-27?
01:11And is that asking for too much?
01:13I don't think that's asking for too much, is it?
01:17You said a 20-27.
01:19Well, I mean, the rumor has been a 20-27 third-round pick back to the Colts for downs, who's
01:24an expiring free agent, but is only 25.
01:28I'm saying I would like it to be a fourth or a fifth-round pick, maybe a conditional, if it's
01:33a 20-27.
01:35If it's a third-round pick, can you do me 20-28 instead of 20-27, just so I can
01:41push the bill further away?
01:44I mean, I see where you're coming from.
01:46My whole thing with the Josh Downs situation is more so like what you alluded to earlier, and having too
01:56many guys that sort of kind of do the same thing.
01:59And if we are going to give up a third, I would assume that we're trying to come to some
02:05long-term arrangement with downs.
02:09And for me personally, like, the way our team is constructed right now, I wouldn't necessarily want to do it.
02:16I think when you look up the makeup of the team anyway, Stephon Diggs plays the same position as Downs,
02:22slot guy, and he's been huge for us in the red zone.
02:25But think about it.
02:27Diggs is only under contract for one more year.
02:29Yeah, but at the same time.
02:30I mean, I'm sorry, for this year.
02:32Yeah, but unless you really love Josh Downs, he's going to come in and take who's, you know, next.
02:39But the trade might be, A, we'll figure this year out.
02:44B, it's also for next year, is I guess how they would have to think about it.
02:49If I'm considering paying a third-round pick, otherwise I'm not doing it.
02:52Yeah, or you can just wait for free agency because, again, also when you look at what Josh Downs has
02:56done,
02:57one, he requested a trade, and I like Josh.
03:01You know, I think he's a cool person, but you going out there requesting a trade with very little to,
03:07like,
03:08no production this year and last year, I don't know necessarily if, you know,
03:13those trade demands are going to be met.
03:15So, I mean, I was a little shocked to see it.
03:18Did you throw a couple back over the last couple years for Josh?
03:22Yeah.
03:22Hanging out in Indy?
03:23You did.
03:25Okay.
03:26Just asking the questions that have to be asked.
03:28I think he's a good player.
03:30I think he's solid.
03:32Sometimes struggle with drops.
03:35But I don't think he's, like, anything special, to be honest, for us to, like, be going out there
03:40and giving up a third-round draft pick.
03:43Like, that's where I stand.
03:45Now, if the offseason comes and, you know, he wants a one-year prove-it deal,
03:50I would be open to, like, giving him a one-year 10.
03:53I would.
03:53But that's free agency.
03:55That's next year.
03:55Stephon Diggs probably won't be on the roster anymore.
03:58So, now you can go out and fill that role.
04:00Yeah.
04:00Go prove it.
04:01Yeah.
04:02No, and that makes certainly more sense, I think, than trading even a third-round pick
04:08in 2028.
04:10Yep.
04:10You know, I'm just saying if it's a third-round pick and Indianapolis is insistent,
04:14either I don't do the deal, to your point, or I push for 2028 as opposed to 2027.
04:21I almost feel like a 2028 third-round pick, even though it's the same round as a 2027 third-round
04:28pick,
04:28it has less value because it's 2028, you know?
04:32Yeah.
04:32I mean, but to the overall point, he's a free agent to be.
04:39He's kind of similar to what they have or the type of route runner that they have.
04:47But, you know, we'll see.
04:50I don't personally think they'll go with one of those two guys, Ayuk.
04:56Well, I didn't even ask you about Ayuk.
04:59Has anything changed?
05:00And I don't remember where you were over the summer when you were working mostly with Doc
05:05and Ben and all those guys.
05:07Were you out on Ayuk completely?
05:10No, I was bring Ayuk in.
05:13Okay.
05:13And did it change as he went diabolical on social media or not?
05:18It only changed after training camp came, and he hadn't hired an agent.
05:25He hadn't got out of the contract because, again, I didn't want it to be a situation where it's like,
05:30Terry, you go all throughout training camp.
05:32You don't have any chemistry.
05:34You got to work your body up.
05:35Like, I didn't want any of that.
05:37So, again, we have been talking about Ayuk all summer, like going back to May, June.
05:44So, in that time frame, I would have expected something to happen to where you're actually making the strides to
05:51actually get on the field
05:53and get ready for the start of the season.
05:55That didn't happen.
05:56So, at that point, it was like, do I really want you now?
05:59Probably not.
06:00And then we go sign Diggs.
06:01Right.
06:02And then I would have never considered this if Terry was still here.
06:08Yeah.
06:09But without Terry, do they have to consider it?
06:13I mean, assuming that the 49ers say or that he's granted readmission to the NFL, which he should be,
06:22and say the 49ers just say, you know what?
06:23We're not dealing with this.
06:24We're just cutting him.
06:25He can go wherever he wants to go.
06:27I mean, I think in the – if everything gets handled how it's supposed to be,
06:32I would not be – I wouldn't mind bringing him in.
06:36You know what would be great?
06:39Brandon Iyuk would be great for business.
06:41He would get this fan base to give a rat's ass.
06:44We need an X.
06:45We need a Z.
06:46We need another one is what I – I mean, I'm loving what I'm seeing out of Traylon.
06:50I'm loving what I'm seeing out of Antonio's stuff.
06:54Would love to see more from Deami, but we're not getting that.
06:57So, again, I wouldn't be opposed to it.
06:59How would you slot him on this team?
07:00I don't want to give up a lot, though.
07:02He would be no better than the fourth guy on this team for me.
07:05Like, Brandon Iyuk hasn't played a game in two years in one month.
07:09Hey, but if he goes out there and gets it done in practice, then what?
07:13I know, but there's no way I'm giving him more reps and more targets
07:16and more target share and more opportunities than Traylon Burks,
07:20Antonio Williams, and Stephon Diggs.
07:22Yeah, nah, he can't jump straight to the front of the line.
07:24All I'm saying is you bring him in, you see what he can do.
07:27Like, practice is – you know, practice for a reason.
07:34Do you share with me the sentiment that the 49ers, once he gets granted readmission,
07:40presuming that that happens, that the 49ers still have another trick up their sleeves,
07:45that they're going to find a way to screw him like he screwed them?
07:48Yeah.
07:48I mean, I don't think he's going to get off, but in the event that he does,
07:53in the event that he does, why not?
07:56Okay.
07:58Low risk, low reward.
07:59A couple of contracts –
08:00Okay.
