The Mid-Devon Advertiser's post-match interview with Bovey Tracey AFC manager Ben Gerring after his side held on to defeat Brixham AFC in the FA Vase second round proper on Saturday, October 31.
Transcript
00:01Joined here with Bovee manager Ben Goering after a Vaz win over Brixham.
00:04Ben, start with your first thoughts on that match.
00:07My first thoughts is I'm just so pleased we got through that.
00:11I'd have loved to have been standing here now giving out all the plaudits because for 80 minutes we were
00:17fantastic.
00:18And I don't mean that in the sense that we played them off the park, but I just thought individually
00:23they all stuck to their task super, super well.
00:26We played in the right areas. We got in behind when we needed to.
00:32And then, yeah, obviously just, you know, I said at half time, we've been here several times, even against Brixham.
00:38And what I will give Brixham credit for is they don't give up.
00:41It doesn't matter if they've got players missing. They work hard for their club and their management.
00:46And we had the beers in our hands at 80 minutes.
00:51And that is just a real big lesson that we keep telling our players.
00:55The game isn't done until it's done. You've seen there, it was completely misjointed.
00:58Subs coming on in different positions, people going down injured, I'm having to come on.
01:04So, yeah, look, bitterly disappointed with the second half in particular and how we managed the scoreline.
01:10But ultimately, it's cup football. We got through and that's all that matters.
01:14You mentioned there about substitutes. Do you feel they changed the game against your favour, maybe?
01:19Yeah, it certainly didn't work for us. It certainly didn't work for us.
01:22I knew we were young today on the bench.
01:23So our starting 11 was about, not as strong as we could go, but as experienced as we could go.
01:29And then, obviously, we lost Bridger to an injury.
01:32We've then lost Balka to an injury and it did.
01:34It flipped the game. It gave them control.
01:36And they started to beat us up a little bit.
01:38They were able to go more direct.
01:39We lost a little bit of power at the top end of the pitch.
01:42He was doing really well, getting us up the pitch, winning flick-ons and we lost that.
01:47So, you know, no disrespect to Zico Kendall at all, but that's not the type of game he wants to
01:51come on into in those moments.
01:53So, yeah, the subs, not for their own fault, but it did switch the game round and it ultimately played
02:01into their hands.
02:02And with those injuries, obviously, that forced you to come on.
02:05How did you feel you got on in those few minutes?
02:07Terribly.
02:08I think I nearly shanked one.
02:10I nearly cost us at the end with giving a foul away and got booked.
02:14So, yeah, honestly, I think last Saturday I really enjoyed at Porter's Head, you know, the result, one thing.
02:19But I enjoyed putting my boots on and trying to help the team.
02:22But no, I didn't think I helped them at all.
02:23I was thrown on.
02:24No warm-up, nothing.
02:27So, and I even wore Balka's shin pads.
02:30It was just a mad 10 minutes.
02:33And like I said, we just, listen, that's us at the moment.
02:36I think last season we were poor at managing games and there's an art to it.
02:40And we just, we haven't mastered that yet.
02:42Let's just put our cards on the table.
02:44It's being streetwise.
02:46It's knowing the dark arts of the game.
02:48And we have, you know, me and Fark know them pretty well.
02:51And we have done this till we're blue in the face with these lads.
02:54But I think when they go out there, they're just, they're too honest.
02:56That's it.
02:57And yeah, we got through it today.
03:00But we know how football works.
03:01You've got to go right to the end.
03:02So happy with the win.
03:04And we'll celebrate that tonight.
03:06They say 75, 80 minutes, you're the better team.
03:08Maybe from minute 20 to 60.
03:10Plains really good football.
03:12Stand out, I would say, Josh Webber with two assists.
03:14What did you make of him today?
03:16I've said to loads of people about Josh.
03:18Even when we have our team meetings and our debriefs.
03:22Josh, the beauty of Josh is, if he's not playing well, he will give you everything.
03:26And I've said to him so many times, you know, add that, keep that quality up.
03:31And he's a massive player for us.
03:33I actually want to give credit to Jadour Lawson as well.
03:35I thought he was excellent.
03:36And the way that we set up our game plan was to get out their full backs and listen with
03:40the 3-5-2.
03:41We've got two wingers that want to get out people.
03:43So we spoke about getting a cross into the box and it took us 28 minutes.
03:47And I was screaming on the sideline, cross, cross, cross.
03:5028 minutes, Jadour Lawson doesn't look, cross into the box, 1-0.
03:54So when you've got wingers that deliver crosses into the box and you've got Baukers and you've
03:57got Oli Applins in the box, things will happen.
04:00So yeah, special mention to the pair of them.
04:01I thought Owen Stockton was magnificent again.
04:06Yeah, and I thought, listen, there's different ways that every 10 minutes is never the same
04:10in football.
04:10And for 18 minutes, we managed the game perfectly.
04:13For the last 10, we completely went away from what was needed.
04:16And that was, look, go long, hit areas, slow the game down.
04:20Win free kicks.
04:21Instead, we're doing the polar opposite.
04:22We're still trying to play.
04:24And it's just, it's a learning curve.
04:26And, you know, the penalty will drop eventually.
04:28Then lastly, what can you take from this game into a difficult month where you play the likes
04:32of Bridgewater and Nuki?
04:33We've got a very tough month going into this one.
04:37But what I've said to the boys, I think that's five wins in seven.
04:40And, you know, we haven't particularly been happy with our season when we're honest
04:44with ourselves.
04:45But listen, we have to take confidence from it.
04:47It's now what the VAR's done for our season last year alongside the league campaign was
04:52unbelievable.
04:53The town came together and it really did kick us on.
04:56So we've now reached that level again, that round again for the third time in the club's
05:01history.
05:02So again, they've got another opportunity, this group, to break records at this club and
05:05produce more history.
05:07So have to see the positives.
05:09We'll have our team night out tonight and we'll let them enjoy it.
05:13And it's the staff now.
05:15We'll get together sort of probably Monday.
05:16I need a couple of days.
05:18And then we'll pick the bones out of it.
05:19But for now, we enjoy it.
05:20Brilliant.
