00:05Ben, what are your first thoughts about that one?
00:08Just said, scoreline tells you everything you need to know. It's a fair result. First half,
00:13I thought we were super competitive. We expected them to be very direct with two big lads up top
00:19and three energetic midfielders going off the second balls. Harvey Coggins, I thought,
00:25was outstanding first half, dealing with Matt Wright. We won a lot of first contacts,
00:30which was what we were hoping for. It was probably no real quality in both teams,
00:36so nil-nil going into half, probably the right result. However, I do feel we had the lion's
00:42share of half chances, but we just didn't quite have that quality in the moments when it was needed.
00:49I'll be honest, I kind of give them a little bit of half time. I thought we were dogged
00:52and we nullified what their main threat is, but I knew they'd do that for 90 minutes.
00:57That's not a Bobby Tracey type of performance. So at some point you need to change and impose
01:04yourselves on the opposition. And I felt like we just kept doing what they wanted us to do.
01:11And it was only a matter of time before things started to become a problem. And 55 seconds it
01:17took from our centre kick. 55 seconds later, we're defending a corner. One minute 20 later,
01:24we've conceded a goal. And I think it was only five minutes after that, we've then conceded a penalty
01:29in a wild tackle. So I wouldn't say we were unfortunate today. I think we need to wise up
01:37and we need to stop causing ourselves problems, but beaten by the better side nonetheless.
01:42Did it feel though in that first half, if you'd been a bit more clinical with some of those half
01:46chances, it could have looked very different for you?
01:48Without a doubt. In a game that was very bitty, it was played in the air a lot.
01:54First and second ball was all around the thirds. It wasn't really settling. It was a lively pitch.
02:00So it comes down to moments. And we had at least two or three really good moments.
02:06And we blazed them, not even close, blazed them over the bar.
02:11So that's where we need a bit of calmness. But I didn't think we were calm all throughout. I think
02:15the way that Exmouth play, it's very high intensity. They make you defend. So in the box,
02:25you need a bit of calmness. And I don't think either side had that, to be honest with you. If
02:29anything,
02:30we were quite the opposite. So they stay as half chances. So yeah, if you take one of them,
02:36it could have been a different game. You know, but I thought for 45 minutes, we were wild.
02:41You know, after 20 minutes, you could see what tempo was to the game. At some point,
02:45somebody's got to put their foot on it. I thought Kieran Bridger tried.
02:48It just wasn't enough throughout our 11 to get the ball down and play.
02:52I appreciate it's not something you may be too keen to talk about, but with two yellows yourself,
02:56was that a case of frustration with the players or the officials or a bit of both?
03:00Nothing with the players. Nothing with the players at all.
03:03You know, at the end of the day, we wear the performance
03:05and the result as a team. That's a given.
03:10It was a bit mind boggling. So I'd spoken to the referee at halftime about a yellow card he gave
03:17to,
03:17once he'd blown the whistle, he booked one of our players. So I asked him about that.
03:21I walked off and then he called me back and booked me. But it was about 15 seconds later,
03:26I wasn't even facing him. So that was quite bizarre. But I'm on a yellow and I've taken it
03:31into the second half. I think the lino called the ref over three times for bits and bobs.
03:38And I've got a second yellow. It's just one of them things. I've got to take it on the chin,
03:43but I was certainly not towards the players. It was just me and my mouth.
03:47Yeah. Then just lastly, it's obviously quite a full on schedule at the moment. How do you,
03:52Varks and the rest of the coaches pick them up going forward now?
03:55I just said in there, we haven't been in this position before. In essence, I get to see what
04:00we're about now. We lost three games last season. Now we've lost two on the spin. Now I get to
04:07see
04:07who's a character and who goes missing. So I get to find out what I'm about as a manager as
04:12well.
04:13It's not panic stations. Absolutely not panic stations. I want to get us back on the ball,
04:17we're not playing the conditions well enough. And I don't think we're confident enough at the
04:21moment to just start stringing some passes together. But listen, they're an honest group.
04:26We'll get together. We'll work Tuesday. And no matter what, this group I know will always give
04:31their all. And I'm not about to change things now, but we certainly need to be a bit more streetwise.
04:36Absolutely. But we'll do that. We'll learn as we go. And I'm more than happy with the 16 that we've
04:42got.
