Part 12 - While recently playing 1985 Atari arcade game Paperboy I thought I spotted more than a few past / future references to movies associated with actor Tom Hanks.
- In 1987 Hanks & Dan Aykroyd formed a cop comedy duo in Dragnet.
- Aykroyd was later in 2015 sci-fi comedy Pixels about alien invaders who take on the form of video game characters. Paperboy has a cameo in this.
- A sign you'll see on the street in Paperboy reads "MEN AT WORK". This was also the title to a 1990 comedy written by & directed Emilio Estevez, co-starring Charlie Sheen.
- I did some previous videos on some possible easter eggs in 1983 horror anthology Nightmares, in which Estevez played a video game ace who winds up fighting the game characters themselves in the real world after they escape the arcade machines.
- Although a few years before Paperboy there are several Atari arcade cabinets in the film from the time period.
- Tom Hanks was also reportedly considered for the role of youth hockey coach Gordon Bombay in The Mighty Ducks in 1992.
- In another video I talked about Hanks in '89 Joe Dante comedy The Burbs. Dick Miller & Robert Picardo played garbage men in this & I often think about the similarity of these characters to Men At Work.
- In another video I mentioned the possible easter eggs to horror author Stephen King in Paperboy. Estevez had starred in his only directorial credit, Maximum Overdrive in '86 where cars, trucks & machines are possessed by an alien force. They come to life haunting & stalking any humans in the area.
- I also did a recent video on Paperboy & cyberspace / cyberpunk movies. Emilio Estevez was in a role like this: time travel thriller Freejack in 1992. I thought the premise similar to films that came later in the '90's such as The Matrix.

00:00While recently playing 1985 Atari arcade video game Paperboy,
00:06I thought I spotted a couple references for movies starring actor Tom Hanks,
00:13both past and future.
00:14I looked into this, and I must say, pretty impressive connections between Hanks and the actual game.
00:21In 1987, Dan Aykroyd and Tom Hanks appeared in Buddy Cop, the slapstick comedy film Dragnet.
00:30Dan Aykroyd, known for Ghostbusters, was later in 2015 sci-fi comedy Pixels, directed by Chris Columbus.
00:41This cast featured Adam Sandler, Kevin James, Peter Dinklage, Sean Bean, and Max Frewer cameos.
00:48So the story of Pixels is like an alien invasion scenario.
00:54The aliens have modeled themselves own popular video game characters, stretching back to the 1980s.
01:01They're cameos by many popular game characters.
01:06Paperboy was among these.
01:08One item that you'll encounter in some of the harder stages of the game,
01:13a road sign that reads,
01:15Minute Work.
01:16This was also the title of a 1990 comedy, written and directed by Emilio Estevez.
01:23Brother Charlie Sheen co-stars, along with Leslie Hope, Keith David, and Dean Cameron.
01:30Interesting connections here.
01:32I did some previous videos on 83 horror anthology Nightmares,
01:38in which Estevez stars in a fascinating segment entitled The Bishop of Battle.
01:44He's a video game ace.
01:46When a new game arrives in a local venue, he goes to great lengths to try and beat this.
01:54There's a very unexpected outcome in the piece.
01:57The game characters escape the confines of cyberspace, and he winds up in a real-world laser battle in the
02:06arcade.
02:06In 83, this was a few years before Paperboy.
02:10There are many Atari cabinets that you can see.
02:14Yeah, as it applies to Tom Hanks, he was reportedly considered for the role of youth hockey coach Gordon Bombay
02:23in the Mighty Ducks in 92.
02:25A movie of Estevez wound up playing this character.
02:29The cast featured Joss Ackland, Wayne Smith, and Joshua Jackson.
02:34In another video, I talked about Tom Hanks in 89 Joe Dante comedy, The Burbs.
02:43Dick Miller and Robert Picardo have minor roles as garbage men.
02:48Estevez and Sheen as garbage men in Minute Work.
02:52I often think about the similarity between these characters and these films.
02:59In another recent video, I mentioned the possible Stephen King future Easter eggs in Paperboy.
03:06Emilio Estevez worked with horror author Stephen King in his sole directorial credit, 1986 sci-fi action horror Maximum Overdrive.
03:17Machines and cars are possessed by some alien force and come to life, stalking any humans that may be standing
03:26around.
03:27Other casts include Pat Hingle, Yardley Smith, Leon Rippey, and Marla Maples.
03:33I did the recent video on Matt Frewer and One More Man 2.
03:38And Emilio Estevez also was in a very interesting science fiction film, Free Jack in 92.
03:44A very similar premise as some of the cyberspace, cyberpunk, action adventure films that would come later in the 90s
03:53like The Matrix.
03:54Free Jack also featured Rolling Stones musician Mick Jagger, actress Renee Russo, and Anthony Hopkins.
04:02You are your the main welcome .
04:02We are the fan of Benficry Alex.
