00:39not play tonight gm sean horkov will address the situation shortly since i was on and mentioned
00:46that friedman has added we'll see how horkov addresses this but it sounds like the current plan is for
00:51larkin not to play until he's traded so that is interesting it's sort of a reverse hellebuck
00:58uh that's occurring here where hellebuck started the area i'm not going to report i'm not going to
01:03come all right i'm ready to come now and then he gets moved this is to arrive is what actually

01:09the thing exactly finish line and in this in this case larkin has been there since training camp began
01:14he's been doing all the stuff he got introduced on the home opener and got booed and then scored
01:20and now it is shifting to this guy's going to stop playing for you this is going to end and

01:29different kind of pressure but there is now pressure being applied this though to me could be pressure
01:35being applied both directions this can be the red wings telling larkin all right you got to expand your
01:43list here because we're not getting the offer we need to trade you and we're not gonna just keep
01:49doing this we need to figure out what we're doing we got a whole situation with simon edvinson we got
01:54to figure out we got this thing with you we're struggling we need to resolve this so we're gonna
01:59sit you down or it could be larkin saying i'm not gonna play until you move me now i'm i'm

02:05given you time i've played i've shown that i'm willing to do stuff for other teams you guys got to
02:11make a deal and i think it's going to be very interesting to see which side of those two
02:17initiated this and sort of pushed this to to where they are now where larkin is just not going to

02:24now and we're just waiting for him to get traded and the sabers we know chad didaminsis has reported
02:30that there have been conversations between yarmo kekalainen and sean horcruft who's currently the
02:35the gm in detroit and so we are keeping a keen eye on this situation but i think it's a
02:41fascinating
02:42one especially considering how it's a it's a flipped show of what you saw with connor hellebuck
02:49all right i had three different things i have to write down the third one i just thought i have
02:53three different directions that i want to go with all of this we can go all of them i know

02:57forgot what the first one was all right i'm going to jump back to the second one and then i'm

03:07is with the hellebuck situation he was suspended not being paid and they had an agreed upon

05:12a deal so that that part i like and with the sabers part of it doesn't it make sense wouldn't
05:20it make sense and i'm not saying that kakowainen is the kind of guy who gets backed into a corner
05:26but just all of a sudden everything you just said there made me think of thomas vanek
05:32because they needed to sign drury and briere and if they weren't going to sign both of them
05:38they needed to pick one and sign him but the one thing they couldn't do is on july 1st have

05:44of them vanish into thin air and drury gear looks dumb in that moment he looked that the organization
05:51looks dumb larry quinn looks dumb everybody looks everybody looks yeah it's a disaster not even dumb
05:56but like petty yeah and like they're not running the business properly we just saw what you did
06:02this franchise was nowhere and then you came out of a lockout and you were so smart and so ahead

06:07the curve and you built this thing and it was awesome and all you got to do is well now

06:17and the next thing that happens is their young stud future star who has since become a member of the
06:24sabers hall of fame and will be inducted into said hall of fame coming up in a couple of months

06:34and probably the wise option would have been go ahead let him go we'll take five first round picks

06:49perception of your franchise if you now let that guy go we're letting our two stars go and also our
06:54future star that we all believe in we're going to let him go everybody wanted vanek here but
07:02the the the salary was higher than they wanted to pay him right and they just kind of had to

07:08they were just kind of forced to do it so is yarmo in a spot i'm not saying he listens

07:16the chatter what people are saying on this station what people are saying in newspapers online everywhere
07:21else i'm not saying he listens i'm not saying he should but the current attitude around yarmo the
07:28current perception of what just happened is he wanted a guy and he was incapable of making that
07:34deal happen does that make you go well crap this one's pretty public i gotta get on this right now
07:41and put that one to bed and then we'll get to the part where we figure out the goaltending situation
07:45and oh by the way the other guy played and got a shutout the other night so goaltending is not

07:49of mind in this moment if i strike now and acquire dylan larkin probably not in time for tonight's game

08:03pushed in any way because of the perception that that was a failure that helped even right even if
08:10he was like yeah i wanted him to a certain point but then the price was too much and i

08:20doing what they said i didn't value him to the level they thought i needed to to acquire him but
08:26you go to bed you're like all right i feel good about what i did and then you hear how

09:22time in columbus and goes wow this guy this guy does stuff this guy is bold this guy will take

09:28and this guy will make deals that's very exciting great it was not a time when he first came in

09:36where you're going to be making big addition moves they were at the bottom of the league
09:40not winning games but they get hot and they find their way to becoming suddenly a great
09:47great team and immediately we all get to like oh this is like this is the kind of thing where
09:53he
09:54would do like if everything about columbus if he's the same guy like he's gonna do something here
09:59and we get all these robert thomas rumors there's some elias peterson mixed in there and we get colton
10:06pareko after robert thomas falls through and then that doesn't happen and there's all there's all
10:12this buzz before the deadline and ultimately nothing really gets across the line he ends up trading isaac
10:18rosean and and and some junk for logan stanley and and shen and like that didn't really work out
10:25but it wasn't it wasn't what he was trying to do so that's like his first almost pareko nixed my
10:32deal
10:33because of a no move i was in on thomas and they didn't they just didn't want to do it
10:37but i was
10:37ready to do it so that's two deals he's ready to make don't get made three if you count hellebuck
10:42three right that that was next that is that is at the draft we get to the draft and it's
10:48okay well
10:49now hellebuck's out there and the sabers are in on that they're right there we know now there's there's
10:54i mean they're talking about the deal today like confirming what the deal was that there was a massive
11:00trade on the table for hellebuck to the sabers on draft day and the jets didn't pull the trigger
11:06but they were there and and and buffalo made a strong offer including quinn including that that
11:14fourth overall pick including murka like there it was a big package the rumor back then was they
11:19didn't want to give up number eight and it seems to be true exactly it's been it's been confirmed now
11:25essentially that the sabers had a monster package and bigger than the one that the jets got from new
11:29jersey so that is two swing that is three swings and misses from yarmo like trying to hit bombs
11:36big daddy like david ortiz hacks at these pitches that he is taking both all three of those miss
11:44then you get to once again july 1st there's another run at hellebuck that doesn't come through
11:50that's four now we get a fifth hellebuck run in season this year last week that is five you just
11:59made him go over three on one trade but i'm with you but it's you know you're right separate events
12:03separate deals like it is it is separate runs at it well because the deal didn't get made if you
12:08failed and he got traded then it would end but he didn't get traded and it's every time there's
12:13reports like now they're done that they're not going to talk again different circumstances every
12:17time just different reasons for it but yeah different over three on the same trade different
12:21no move clauses that have activated different players that are playing well jack quinn right
12:26all of this is not even me or you saying yarmo went over three this is us saying yarmo knows
12:33that
12:33he went over three like internally i wanted that guy i didn't get him and i tried again and i
12:38didn't
12:38get him i tried again and i didn't get him and now he's gone so i can't try that anymore

12:42now what can i do now what now how do i spend my money how do i spend my players
12:45now i'm calling
12:46sean horcruft of the detroit red wings and talking about dylan larkin and how how frustrated am i right
12:52now how his job is to not be but human nature would suggest he's probably pretty peed off
12:59sure and you brought up they turned themselves into a great team last year and i immediately
13:05it was like great team yeah they weren't but it suddenly made me realize there's a difference
13:09between a great a great team plays in the 25 26 season the 25 26 buffalo sabers were a great
13:17team
13:17doesn't make them a great franchise doesn't make them anything it just they had that team like had
13:21a great year equals had a great team for that year but undeniably i would say objectively
13:31this team you wanted it to get because it wasn't perfect you wanted it to get a little better and
13:35i
13:35think objectively it got a little worse and all you're trying to do is get a little better but even
13:40if we'll count i will count byram and zell wigger as a wash and i think a brilliant deal all
13:46of that
13:46especially because you wind up with the fourth overall pick in that with another defenseman that's
13:51in the system who we probably won't talk about a lot unless it's trade related for a couple of years
13:56um but adding uh crevier
14:03does not make up for talk no so no so in the best way i can paint it a team
14:12that was great last year
14:14in the current definition that i just laid out of what is great a team that was great last year
14:18and
14:18needed to get a little better got a little worse not a lot worse didn't blow it up didn't ruin

14:23most of the guys are there but you got a little worse and the gm was trying to make them
14:28a lot better
14:29a lot better so with this other idea of how to make them a lot better going away it would
14:36make sense
14:38with all and i don't want to just start this again we're on larkin watch but it would make sense
14:43that a guy who's perceived to be as aggressive as kekalainen is who just swung and missed
14:50three to five times if you want to cut sure right um it's at least three if you want to
14:55make hellebuck
14:56one move but it was three runs at it and you've got pareko thomas in there mixed in if he
15:01is
15:03looking at his own um i don't know his position in all of this his his stamp on the team
15:13he's been
15:14the team got better when he got hired because he's meaner looking than kevin adams i don't know
15:18but the attitude changed and things just maybe he got lucky and the timing was right whatever it is
15:23he still has to look at and go well this in mid january of last year he had to be
15:29like well this is
15:30awesome this is this is how it works like i just come in i replace him i walk down there
15:35i have a
15:35stern look on my face and they all start playing i give a couple of press conferences where i talk
15:41about how people are going to be accountable and suddenly they are man this is awesome all right
15:44now it's time for me to do my job and actually improve this roster and here's what i want to
15:49do
15:49and it doesn't work it doesn't work he's got to be dying yes to get in there and do something
15:55that's his um and the next pete you know it was friday that the hellebook thing fell apart not
16:02fell apart it ended right um and you said yeah by monday i'll have a name in mind well i've
16:06had
16:06we've had larkin's name kicking around for a while but all of a sudden and i'm not saying they're
16:12entirely related but i'm saying i can see a world where they are all of a sudden this guy this
16:16he's
16:16scorned to a certain extent right absolutely this guy who wants to go out there and take control of
16:21this and improve this team and make it push so that a great team turns into a great franchise
16:26great team from last year into a middling team mediocre middle of the pack team right now
16:32push that forward and he's got ideas on how to do it and more than ideas on how to do
16:37it he really
16:38wants to put his stamp on it it would make sense but that thing falls apart for him on friday
16:44and he
16:44continues and we're hearing a push you know conversations in that direction and suddenly it's
16:49announced larkin's not playing tonight and he's not playing anymore for the red wings until he's
16:54moved um that sounds like yarmo to me that sounds like a heavily i can see a world where it's
17:02at i'm
17:03not saying for sure they're getting them because hey if suddenly it becomes apparent to the league
17:08that larkin's for real available not just yeah you know if you want to call no no no we're making
17:13this
17:13move uh last call for dylan larkin and that's when other people have jumped in and that's where
17:17new jersey jumped in and and beat the sabers last time but um i wouldn't want to rule it out
17:25rule it
17:25out that a scorned yarmo is a more aggressive yarmo and that this whole thing where dylan larkin's not
17:33going to play has to do with the sabers on the verge of or at least putting in offers that
17:40are close to
17:41acceptable to make the thing happen that's if there's if it's connected in any way to the sabers
17:47i think that's the way i think it is that this this hellebuck thing ended for them on friday
17:54afternoon friday morning and it quickly we are mo turned his sights and said who else is out there
18:00larkin all right let me talk and it doesn't mean that the red wings are interested in trading him
18:06here or that larkin would come here but what could be happening is the sabers are like listen i'm ready
18:12to make you a big time offer are you trading this guy or is this happening is this time for
18:19me to tell
18:20you what i'm willing to give you or are we still putzing around and just waiting because i'm ready
18:26to do this and we've got a bunch of games and stuff we'd like to use them right even if
18:30that if if the
18:31red wings looked at the sabers went not you that could have spurned the red wings to go to boston
18:38or to minnesota or to carolina or any of the teams that are on the list and say listen we're
18:44getting
18:44we're getting offers from people who we can't trade this guy to if you don't get real now
18:51you might not get him and i might have to ask him to wave somewhere that he doesn't want to
18:56go
18:56and then you'll miss out so let's get let's get going it's time and maybe that's the moment
19:01that might be what we're observing right now exactly we tripped that switch that led us into
19:07all right your list isn't good enough we can't make the deal we're done screwing around get off
19:11the ice you're going to get hurt before we can move you we're doing this we're not doing so it's

19:14to go it's time and um and that does not again that doesn't have to mean sabers no but that

19:20what it means is that horcruft and the red wings have gone this is this is not a situation we

19:26in it sit down we're going to listen to everybody we're not just listening to your list you can't
19:30demand everything right we're we're done you have the right to refuse it but we're going to start
19:34having conversations we're not going to keep acting as if you're just on the team like this
19:39is going to go away which is what they've been doing for the first dozen games of the season or
19:43even we're just going to wait for somebody to make us or not we're going to start going out there
19:47and harvesting like all right come on minnesota what are you going to give us because this is happening
19:52and he's he's getting restless we're getting restless other teams that would want him are
19:58getting restless and maybe i can you know catch somebody in a bad spot like yarmo and get an
20:05overpayment well and you're also you don't have to call every team that's uh on the list and say hey
20:13heads up we're really pushing forward you make that announcement loud and clear by saying he's not
20:18playing anymore exactly other general managers know what that means we're speculating about it
20:22we're i think intelligently taking in all the information and trying to spit back what it could
20:27mean but a real an nhl gm worth his salt knows what this means this is this is a smoke
20:35signal or a bat
20:36signal like call us now about larkin because this is happening and if you want to be involved now is
20:42the time so it's it's certainly raising the temperature on all of it and there's nothing
20:48to indicate that the sabers wouldn't be a part of the conversation wouldn't be interested in it
20:52and i i think it's very likely again back to the yarmo scorned thing it makes sense to me that

20:59guy wants to put his mark on this team whether he cares what people think about him or not i

21:05think just being uh human pride would kick in and be like i it's on me to make this team

21:12walked into a team that got really really good on my watch without me doing it and it's time for

21:20to do it and the only and you you elevated it but if this team went from what it was
21:25last year to a
21:26little bit better that might be a conference finals type of team but it goes to a little bit worse

21:31might be a team that misses the playoffs his goal is to win the cup so let's skip the little
21:35bit better
21:35and jump to the much better idea and you never know i mean of course everybody every day would
21:40like to make everything a lot better you can't always do it i mean that's a oversimplified way
21:45to put it but just thinking of the position he's in and how things have gone for him over the
21:49past
21:50whatever eight months or so sorry 12 almost 12 months it's been 11 months almost a year we're coming
21:57up on a year um and he doesn't have a signature thing that he's done to make the team better
22:03and the perception is that he's failed in his attempts i'm sure he's got reasons uh what's
22:09my list i want to get my list out uh cop-out crotch excuse and explanation i'm sure they're all
22:13explanations but to people who are just like damn it i need i needed hellebuck it sounds like an
22:21excuse or crotch or a cop-out right if you explain why it didn't happen i think it's all logical
