00:00Jules comes in about where on a hypothetical ranking of terms for where Dalton Kincaid says he was hit.
00:11It's, I mean, it's a little bit, not genteel, but it's not, you know, you have to, if you know,
00:19you know.
00:19Yeah.
00:20It's not that descriptive.
00:22There are other more descriptive terms that would not get you bleeped.
00:27Right.
00:27I feel like it's maybe the least offensive way to refer to that part of the male anatomy.
00:38It got laughs.
00:40Yeah, I guess.
00:42Yeah.
00:42Yeah.
00:43Probably wasn't funny to him when he had it happen.
00:47Maybe it was.
00:47Yeah, I don't know.
00:48Yeah.
00:48Maybe it was.
00:49Yeah.
00:50It got like chuckles.
00:51Yeah.
00:52From the press.
00:53Yeah.
00:55I, um, yeah, I, I had originally read online that the, the trainers were looking at his knee and, uh,
01:03Tim, Tim Graham had a good line on that during the two o'clock, uh, the start of the two
01:07o'clock hour.
01:08When he was talking to Brad on his way back from training camp, uh, you know, referring to just how
01:14large an apparatus we're talking about.
01:16If they were looking at his knee after getting hit there.
01:19Um, so why would they have been doing that?
01:22I don't, I don't know.
01:23You wouldn't want that for the bills for Kincaid sake, right?
01:25It's possible that was misidentified and misreported or I don't know, but there, you know, I, I, I, I guess
01:33I believe Dalton Kincaid that he's, his knee's fine.
01:36Would you even think about it?
01:38I always think about it.
01:40So if with him, with him, I always think about it.
01:42I'm the gullible one.
01:43Would you just trust him automatically?
01:46If, if trainers are looking at his knee, if they were, that's kind of weird.
01:51If he wasn't hit in the knee and they would go to him, like, wouldn't the trainers normally like, what
01:56happened?
01:57Yeah.
01:57Where does it hurt?
01:58Right.
01:58And he probably wouldn't have said his knee.
02:00He probably wouldn't say family jewels to the trainers either.
02:03No.
02:04Right.
02:04But he wouldn't have said knee.
02:05He'd be a lot looser with the lingo there without microphones around.
02:07He'd just point.
02:08Right.
02:08If he had to.
02:09Yeah.
02:09Or just, then they would know.
02:11Right.
02:12Yes.
02:13The last thing Kincaid would want.
02:15I got knee in the crotch, guys.
02:17Okay.
02:18The last thing Kincaid would want would be anybody speculating about his knee.
02:24I agree.
02:25Either knee, ankle, anything down there.
02:28To me, it's possible.
02:29I didn't see Sal tweet this.
02:31I just saw it, you know, I follow, you know, I don't want to, I don't want to have to
02:38be discerning.
02:38I just follow everybody, it feels like.
02:40So I get a bunch of that.
02:42And maybe they just, you know, maybe they jumped the gun.
02:45Maybe they misidentified me.
02:47I don't know what happened there.
02:48So, I mean, I wasn't there, so I don't know.
02:50I can't.
02:51Oh, well, if you weren't there, how could you know?
02:53I can't vouch.
02:54Nor have I seen video of the trainers examining anybody.
02:57It would have to have been destroyed by now.
02:59Right.
03:00You can't have video of that.
03:02Right.
03:02You can't get out.
03:04No, Kincaid, I mean, I wasn't there either, needless to say.
03:07But there's the tweet, he is leaving practice after an injury.
03:15And they're like, lower body or leg injury.
03:18That was said.
03:20He was leaving.
03:21And that was enough.
03:23Enough time went by before he was like wearing his helmet again and was standing out there.
03:28I don't know if he did anything else.
03:30I'm sure that information is known.
03:32But he like was still out there after this all happened.
03:36But there was enough time after the original report for pretty much everybody to, you know, jump in on him.
03:45And like the last thing, it's not even really fair because it comes off like it's his fault.
03:50Right.
03:50I mean, there are times, I'm sure, even professionals where they are a little bit soft when it comes to
03:55injuries.
03:55And they, you know, you want them to be more of a gamer and they're not.
03:58I'm not saying that's true of Kincaid, but there's only so much you can control here.
04:02And the guy's had several injuries now.
04:05So he gets hurt.
04:08Maybe it's his knee.
04:09You're saying trainers reportedly are looking at his knee.
04:12You know, I might have done a thing that is the reason why, like, that might help color in exactly
04:21what you're laying out here.
04:22Because I'm going through and I don't see knee.
04:27But you see leg.
04:29Yeah.
04:31Or lower body.
04:33Yeah, I don't know.
04:34I don't.
04:35Was it all deleted?
04:36Walked to the side and talked with athletic trainers.
04:38Slow to get up.
04:42Yeah.
04:43Talked with trainers.
04:44I might have jumped to the conclusion that, oh, it's got to be his knee.
04:49Okay.
04:49Maybe, I don't know.
04:50I've only found two so far.
04:52Maybe there's definitely more.
04:55Definitely more.
04:55Anyway, so, yeah, I want to back out of wrongfully accusing reporters covering this as having said it was his
05:03knee.
05:03Because maybe they didn't.
05:05And I just assumed it.
05:06Whether they did or not, the thing that would be the worst for him is for all of us to
05:13think it was his knee.
05:15And that would be kind of funny if it looked like they were looking at his knee, like you were
05:21saying, and they really weren't.
05:22I don't know.
05:24I just feel like, for him, that's what, I just couldn't stand it at this point if I were Dalton
05:30Kincaid.
05:31You know, and like, what he's out to prove this year is that he can stay on the field.
05:38And, I mean, it's easy to say.
05:40And the more times you're injured, I think the harder it would be to be able to do that.
05:45I mean, it just takes a toll on you.
05:46And even maybe emotionally, psychologically, it takes a toll on you.
05:51But that's really what, I think it's pretty much almost unanimous on him at this point.
05:58Which is, look, when he's out there, he can catch it, he can run, he's a weapon.
06:04And the Bills have, to a decent extent, at best, acted like they know that.
06:10I mean, when he is running routes, he gets the ball more on a higher percentage of routes than most,
06:18if not all, tight ends the last couple of years.
06:20Like, he's not a decoy.
06:22They don't, it's not Sammy Watkins, you know, when he showed up and the Bills spent all that they did
06:28to draft Sammy Watkins and then just couldn't be bothered.
06:30Like, that's, I mean, that was egregious.
06:33So, I think they know that they've used Kincaid, like, that he can be dangerous.
06:42But it's injuries and that he's not multidimensional.
06:47Right.
06:48So that he, they think he has to come off the field.
06:50And it's probably also with the injury point in mind, too, that you're saving him a little bit.
06:55I think I would really like to find out in a year here.
06:59Like, if he, if he, despite today, which turns out not to be as much of a scare as maybe
07:05it seemed like it was when it first started getting, you know, reported that he was down and being looked
07:11at.
07:12Maybe we will, if he can, like, get through camp and there's not, like, pitch count, you know, days for
07:20him, even in the regular season.
07:22Like, if he just seems healthy, right?
07:23He's not on the injury report.
07:25We don't see him with a wrap on his leg.
07:27He's not getting vet rest.
07:28Like, he just seems like full go and they still use him the way they have been.
07:34Then that becomes a personnel issue, a problem with his being, like, lacking enough of a variety of skill sets
07:45to be used more.
07:47Because I've been sort of wondering, are they, do they limit him intentionally because they're worried about his health?
07:55And if he's clean health-wise, then do we see him play?
08:00Does his snap count?
08:01I don't know.
08:02Double would be a lot, I guess.
08:04But maybe by 50%, his snap count goes up and they, then they use him more.
08:10And he becomes a guy that can catch 100 passes.
08:12And maybe challenge 1,000 yards.
08:15You know, and all that.
08:16Well, last year, how many games did Kincaid play more than 55% of the snaps?
08:26One or two, if that.
08:27Zero.
08:28Okay, zero.
08:28Yeah.
08:2955 was his season high.
08:3155% in week three against Miami.
08:35Five for 66 and a touchdown.
08:37Even in the Baltimore game, when they were down so bad.
08:40I guess that, it didn't take that long, that comeback.
08:42It wasn't like the whole.
08:43It was like 15 minutes, yeah.
08:44It was quick.
08:45And, but they were always chasing in that game.
08:48And he played exactly 50, well, 50.6% of the snaps in that game.
08:53And, all right, so you're going to Houston in week one, this point you're making.
08:57Do you think, like, week one is the, that's what's going to tell you?
09:02That's what's going to tell us?
09:03I mean, there could always be, like, a matchup issue that can affect that.
09:07Yeah, I wonder if they will be reluctant to use him, say, on 70% of the offensive snaps.
09:14Either because of his skill set, or is it fear?
09:20Protecting him.
09:21Load management.
09:22That kind of thing.
09:23Like, we know he's had a history of blank, right?
09:27And so, we want to try to manage that as best we can.
09:31And 50% of him all year is better than 70% of him for a few weeks, but then
09:37he's shelved.
09:38So, that maybe has been their approach.
09:42But I wonder if it does, like, if he just is as healthy as he's ever been as a Bill,
09:49does he get more?
09:51Or is it always going to be this for more than one reason?
09:56His health and or Khalil Shakir's their slot guy.
10:00He's valuable to them.
10:02Kincaid is almost a given that it's going to be a pass play.
10:06We don't want to waste his reps on blocking because we want to maximize what we have him here to
10:13do best,
10:13which is catch the ball.
10:14So, we don't want to use him in situations where he's a decoy because that's just wasting, you know,
10:20potential, you know, you're giving him another opportunity to potentially get hurt or hurt himself.
10:26So, slow play it.
10:28I don't know.
10:30When you draft a guy in the first round, I'm not thinking about, you know, you playing half the snaps.
10:36Usually.
10:37It's all been so complicated.
10:39Yeah.
10:40With him.
10:40The one thing that there isn't, you know, injuries happen.
10:44He was injured going into that draft.
10:46Like, he didn't work out at the combine that year, if I remember right.
10:51So, it wasn't, like, out of nowhere.
10:53And injuries, you know, anyway, can, of course, often be just very random.
10:58But what there isn't from the Kincaid draft is a wide receiver that we've been, you know, dying for around
11:07here for at least this long.
11:09That's 2023 when Kincaid was picked.
11:12That's sitting there that just went after him.
11:15Right.
11:15They all went before him.
11:17You had four in a row that went shortly before Kincaid was drafted, including last year's Offensive Player of the
11:23Year in Smith and Jigba.
11:25But there isn't, like, somebody – we don't have that.
11:31We're lucky from a caller standpoint that there isn't some stud receiver that was picked after him.
11:37It's always been complicated, and the injuries make it more complicated.
11:41What the injuries don't have to do with that is that it was always going to take circumstances, but more
11:50importantly, a really interesting mind that could figure out how to make Kincaid worth such a draft pick on a
12:00team with knocks on it and with digs on it even at the time.
12:03And Shaqir has been in the way, if you will.
12:08They're in each other's way a little bit, but Shaqir, as a slot receiver, he doesn't move from his position,
12:14and that just makes it – I think it just makes it more complicated.
12:18When you're talking about these guys, and this is what we're doing, and we're often doing – when you're talking
12:24about them individually, then that's what's complicated is, well, what do I need from Dalton Kincaid to make this look
12:33like it's been worth it?
12:35What do I need from Shaqir now that he's getting real money, he's got his next contract, right?
12:40So what do I need from him to make it look like that was worth signing him to, paying him?
12:45And then there's Knox, who they've been paying really good money throughout this whole period, even though I thought maybe
12:52he would be gone by now, but nope.
12:54So it's complicated individually, take just those three guys alone, having it look good that each of them is worth
13:06the investment.
13:08From a team standpoint, which is what they should be and probably presumably are more interested in, it's gone fine.
13:16I mean, they've won like crazy.
13:18So it's not like these – even Keon Coleman, you know, like it's not like these picks are getting them
13:23beat.
13:24So much.
13:25But it just – I feel like we're always wanting when it comes to, you know, maybe not Knox or
13:31even Shaqir, but with Kincaid especially, and of course Coleman.
13:35We're like wanting something that may or may not even be possible or in their plans.
13:41Right.
13:42Again, for the two different reasons or maybe the two reasons combined just to make it enough, health and schematic.
13:50Like do I have a place for you if all we want to do when you're on the field is
13:56throw, as easy of a tell as that is, I mean, I think it's maybe to Kincaid's credit and maybe
14:02their credit as, you know,
14:06drawing up this offense that Kincaid is as successful as he is with as damning as some of those splits
14:14are.
14:14Like that they are exclusively going to throw mostly when he's on the field.
14:20Like the percentages of that is in the 80s, I think, if I remember right, which is just a massive
14:25number.
14:26And so can you – the guy you prevented, he could be the most durable human on earth.
14:36And with their personnel and the way they operate, I wonder if it's feasible for him to play more than
14:43he does.
14:45You know, that's why we just have never really known because his health has always been somewhat of a question,
14:52at least once he got through that rookie year.
14:54The last three seasons – excuse me, two seasons – have been a lot of that.
15:00Basically just manage his reps and he's going to miss – you know, oh, he's down this week, he'll be
15:06back in a couple weeks, whatever.
15:08And we just have never really been able to get our hands around exactly why he plays as sparingly as
15:14he does.
15:14But the end result is, I think you've got a guy that looks like you could be getting more out
15:21of, and we're not exactly sure why we're not.
15:25It's almost a little bit like Gabe Davis in that particular way.
15:31Not the last exact point, do we think we should be getting more out of Gabe Davis?
15:35No.
15:36But how he was a complimentary piece in their offense.
15:40He had that one 13-second game that's like record stuff.
15:44But for the most – and it was very useful, like touchdowns and, you know, contested catches.
15:50Like Davis played – I'm thinking more of the first time than the second – than the return.
15:54But, you know, he was a complimentary piece and, you know, mostly fans got kind of tired of him and
16:03frustrated with him.
16:04But, okay, like mostly you would call that a pretty good win, Davis.
16:08Oh, yeah, for a fourth-round pick, for sure.
16:10But he was not a first-round pick, you know, and that's what – Kincaid is one of these guys
16:14that there are many of over the years with the Bills and the Sabres
16:17where you're always holding them up against – into the light – next to the light of their draft capital,
16:23you know, if that makes sense.
16:25And it's going to be tough to win.
16:27It always was going to be tough to win.
16:29I mean, I've thought that since the beginning with that pick.
16:32In the second round in that draft, for what it's worth, there were four wide receivers.
16:35So the Bills could have – you can always do something else.
16:38Those are not the only two positions in football.
16:42But it was in order of – in that draft, Jonathan Mingo, who was drafted by Carolina, traded to Dallas,
16:51and has busted.
16:51I mean, it's pick 39, not pick 9, but still.
16:54Not a win.
16:56Jaden Reed, nice player for Green Bay.
16:58Rashi Rice, nice for Kansas City.
17:01And then Marvin Mims, Bills killer.
17:03Marvin Mims was the last pick of round two that year, 2023.
17:07Then Tank Dell.
17:10Well, so crisis averted maybe, family jewels, not a term I've heard in many years, not an expression I've heard
17:20in many years or maybe ever used.
17:23But okay, it seems like a pretty good choice by Kincaid, you know, in that sort of setting.
17:27I think it's safe, yeah.
17:28You know, good call.
17:31What is the story so far?
17:33So I was in Chicago over the last few days, and of the few Bills fans that I interacted with,
17:39you know, that maybe knew that I worked here or something,
17:44and this is kind of typical, there were two questions about training camp that I got.
17:49One is, so how do they look?
17:53And you know what, man?
17:55I don't know.
17:55Probably fine.
17:56It's early.
17:56It's practice.
17:57Yeah, right.
17:58I'm not sure I want to take anything too seriously as far as that goes.
18:03But the real one is, like, is there any news?
18:06Injuries?
18:07And we had a close call.
18:09CJ Gardner-Johnson had a Saturday morning thing that turned out.
18:14I mean, we still don't know a timeline, but certainly, you know, we know what a timeline would have been
18:19for a torn Achilles,
18:21which is what some people were speculating about on Saturday morning.
18:24I don't think that that's accurate.
18:27I think maybe an Achilles injury is less serious than a calf strain at this point.
18:30Yeah, I don't know.
18:31I think that would have been the year.
18:34So that, you know, was avoided, but I don't know how long this – I find it interesting, too,
18:41and you're always learning, and maybe, you know, I can use to pay better attention.
18:47I guess I've never really thought about the calf being large enough to be upper and lower.
18:52But, you know, it is, you know, it's a lower calf.
18:55Okay, is that worse than upper?
18:58Is that like high ankle sprain versus ankle sprain?
19:01Like, I don't know how all that works.
19:02I've never really heard – I've heard calf strain, ruptured calf, whatever.
19:07I've never heard upper-lower calf.
19:10It's, you know, it's about six inches long or whatever.
19:15So –
19:17By the way, we've moved on to the calf.
19:19Yeah, we're on – yes, thank you.
19:22Very important to make that clear.
19:23So do we have upper or lower?
19:25That's what I'm saying.
19:26They said lower – it's a lower calf strain.
19:27Lower calf.
19:28Lower calf strain.
19:29And you don't know if that's better or worse.
19:30I have no idea.
19:31I don't either.
19:32I don't know.
19:32I've never heard that used to describe a calf injury is what I'm saying, like upper or lower.
19:37Maybe upper doesn't even – maybe you never hear upper, but lower is differentiated.
19:41I have no idea.
19:41I thought of Joe Burrow when I heard calf strain.
19:46That was two years ago.
19:47And that –
19:48I was like –
19:49That was a while.
19:50That kind of wrecked him.
19:51Yeah.
19:52I mean, he – maybe it was upper.
19:56Maybe it was a different grade.
19:58Mm-hmm.
19:59Yeah.
19:59Everybody's different.
20:01But, you know, okay, doesn't sound that bad.
20:04Could have been worse.
20:05We watched the clip of Burrow pulling up, rolling right a couple years ago.
20:10And like, oh, is that an Achilles tear?
20:12What is this?
20:13No, it's a calf strain.
20:15But he struggled to get right.
20:19I mean, it took him some time to get out back on the field, and then it kind of was
20:23always there, I think.
20:24Then he had another injury.
20:26And then he hurt his wrist or something later that year, I think, is what ended up doing him in.
20:29But, yeah, no, that's right.
20:30So I can appreciate that this could have been worse, but it's also maybe the kind of injury that just
20:36sort of is a problem for a guy.
20:38Linger, especially with a guy –
20:40He's older.
20:41I feel like a safety – any DB, really, is – there's a lot more change of direction than –
20:48you know, a quarterback is going to run around.
20:51But it's not – he's not backpedaling and then pivoting to, like, leap forward and try to make a play,
20:56which is what DBs often are doing.
20:58So, yeah, it could – it's certainly still going to bear watching.
21:04But, again, you know, at least we don't have reason to think it's threatening his season.
21:10And Sal was on this morning and was asked about, like, how are they going to proceed without him.
21:14And he mentioned how there was a backup who was playing and that he got burned by Kincaid a couple
21:20of times.
21:21And, like, this is the reason why injuries are a problem because now you're into your depth.
21:25He wasn't supposed to be on the field.
21:26I forget his name.
21:27But somebody new went in to play the position.
21:29I heard that the two players who took turns, maybe this is – Geno Stone might be the player you're
21:36thinking of.
21:37No.
21:37Because Hamlin was the other.
21:38That I read, again, accounts that Hamlin and Stone were the two players who played in Gardner Johnson's spot while
21:46he was out.
21:46Well, I'm not sure – I'm not putting it on Sal that he said exactly he was playing in his
21:50spot.
21:51But there was a safety who was playing – and I'm trying to find it – because he wasn't there
21:56or just was playing.
21:58And it wasn't –
22:00Got torched.
22:00Going great.
22:01Yeah.
22:02Sam Franklin.
22:04Oh, yeah.
22:04I did see his name, too.
22:06Yeah.
22:06Okay.
22:07We'll talk to Sal at 5 today.
22:09Before that, Taylor Kiles, reporter for Patriots CLNS.
