Minister of Public Utilities, Barry Padarath, is confirming that a number of WASA workers will no longer be employed with the Authority, and have received letters to this effect.
However the Minister is seeking to make it clear that only short-term staff will be impacted.

The confirmation came during the meeting of the Standing Finance Committee.

00:00Are you aware that currently a number of WASA workers are being served with termination notices or notices indicating that
00:11their contract of employment will come to an end by the end of this month and there will not be
00:16any renewal of their contract of employment?
00:18And is that in relation to or as a result of the drastic cuts we are seeing under this line
00:25item?
00:25This is a usual practice of a notice being served to persons who wants your short term.
00:32That is why in the budget books it says short term employment and therefore as the need arises for short
00:42term employment.
00:42This is the same member who was ranting and raving just a few months ago about over 500 employees hired
00:49at WASA.
00:50So he speaks on one side of his mouth complaining about 500 employees then hired now that it comes to
00:57an end based on a short term contract.
01:03Based on a short term contract the member now complains that the contracts are coming to an end.
01:09There must be an assessment of the needs for short term employment but as I have indicated before, the variation
01:16in the figures that the member has presented has to do with employees on the establishment and therefore there will
01:22be no interference in terms of sending any of these employees on the establishment home at WASA.
01:31Unlike him, we are committed to keeping WASA employees.
