00:00Plans have been formally submitted to Newcastle City Council for a £128 million redevelopment
00:08of the 4th Goods Yard, a disused railway site next to Central Station. The project aims to
00:15transform what has been described as a bleak corner of the city into a vibrant, mixed-use
00:21neighbourhood. Proposals include over 500 built-to-rent apartments, a 650-space multi-storey
00:29car park, and the creation of an elevated urban park along a former railway viaduct.
00:35The redevelopment also suggests the conversion of railway arches into shops, bars or leisure
00:41spaces, with the first phase running from Central Station to the Redhue Bridge, featuring a viewing
00:46terrace and event space. The redevelopment forms part of the Wider 4th Yards initiative, which
00:53could see over 2,000 new homes built across Tyneside over the next two decades.
00:59Developers state the project will create almost 900 construction jobs. Work could begin in
01:05September and finish by 2032. The plans also introduce the Scotswood Line, a linear park for
01:12pedestrians and cyclists, linking the city centre to Newcastle Business Park. Advocates say
01:18it will create an active and connected part of the city, where once it was an inaccessible
01:23and bleak landscape. Critics caution the project's scale must respect existing buildings and the
01:28Tyneside Gorge.
