A new footbridge across the River Tyne could soon become part of Newcastle’s skyline, under fresh plans revealed for the long-awaited Forth Yards regeneration.
00:00A major new vision to transform one of Newcastle's most prominent derelict sites is taking shape,
00:06with plans unveiled for a huge regeneration of the Four Fjords area on the banks of the River Tyne.
00:12The ambitious Muster Plan could see 2,500 new homes built over the next two decades,
00:18along with green spaces, community facilities and even a striking new footbridge connecting Newcastle and Gateshead.
00:25The 52-acre site, long described as the city's last major development opportunity, has been largely empty for more than 20 years,
00:33but now with a £121.8 million government funding package confirmed, hopes are high that this long-awaited project will finally move forward.
00:42Among the highlights of the plan is a proposed High Line, a New York-style elevated park and cycleway
00:48that would follow a disused railway spur from Central Station along Scottswood Road.
00:53Council officers say it could be a game-changer in creating a new community in the city's West End.
00:59Newcastle City Council has launched a six-week public consultation, inviting residents to share their views on what the Four Fjords' development should include,
01:08from housing and transport links to leisure and green spaces.
01:12A series of drop-in sessions will be held across the city until the 26th November, with details available on the Council's LexTalk website.
01:20Council leader Karen Kilgower says Four Fjords could deliver huge economic boosts for Newcastle,
01:26creating hundreds of jobs during construction and many more once the new neighbourhood is up and running.
01:32With partners including Homes England, Network Rail and the North East Combined Authority,
01:37the city hopes private investment will follow, turning what was once an ISO into a thriving new quarter on the time.
