NE1’s 24 Doors of Christmas

NE1, Newcastle’s Business Improvement District, are working with lots of businesses in Newcastle for their 24 Doors campaign this Christmas, including Newcastle Castle, Nexus and Deep North.

00:00So, we're currently in Newcastle Castle, which is a venue taking part in 24 Doors this year.

00:0524 Doors is basically a city-wide cultural advent calendar, where a venue opens their

00:13doors each day to the public throughout December to kind of let the public know a little bit

00:18more about the history of Newcastle, the culture of Newcastle, and just experience new things

00:22that they might not have done before.

00:24So we've got a range of venues taking part this year.

00:26We've got some returning people, some old favourites.

00:29So we've got obviously Newcastle Castle, we've got the Theatre Royal, Bessie Surtey's House,

00:34a whole host of people taking part.

00:35And then we've also got some new faces as well, which is really exciting, doing some

00:39more experiential stuff.

00:40So we've got Deep North taking part this year, who are doing some donut making, which is

00:44really fun.

00:45And we've also got Nexus taking part too, who are inviting people into the Nexus Learning

00:50Centre to get to know a bit more about the metros.

00:53And also they get to experience the opportunity to go on a metro driving simulator as well,

00:58which is something you would never normally get to do, which is really fun.

01:01We've been involved for a few years with 24 Doors of Christmas.

01:04I think from our perspective, it's nice to be involved with something that's city-wide.

01:10We very much view the castle as being part of the lifeblood of Newcastle.

01:16It's iconic building, I suppose, it crops up on all the sort of council stuff around

01:20the city and what have you.

01:21This is the season when things start to, I guess, slow down a little bit for us.

01:26As you can probably feel, it's very cold in here.

01:28And just as the winter goes on, I think people are thinking, there are fewer tourists around,

01:33people are thinking more about shopping and getting their Christmas shopping ready.

01:37And it's nice just to be able to give people a little break for that and get some people

01:41into the building in one of our quieter seasons and just give them a chance to have a look

01:47around this kind of...

01:49And I think it fits very nicely with the idea of just getting the doors open.

01:53There are lots of magnificent doorways in the castle which we're glad to be able to

01:57open up for Christmas, really.
