Back at Lake Kerkini in the heat of summer, the birds are busy, the light is harsh, and the action comes fast. This relaxed bird photography outing follows a return to Greece after months away, with a search for little bitterns, glossy ibis, bee-eaters, pelicans, and plenty of squacco herons along the canals and reed beds.

The day brings a close look at squacco herons, a purple heron, and a dramatic moment when a juvenile goshawk makes a failed attack on a little egret. There’s also a memorable sequence of a squacco heron catching a huge fish and struggling for minutes to swallow it before the meal gets away. As thunder builds and rain moves in, frogs start calling and dragonflies gather under shelter, giving the scene a vivid summer wildlife atmosphere.

Created for viewers who enjoy bird photography, wildlife watching, nature documentary style travel, and birding at Lake Kerkini in Greece. It also fits searches for heron photography, raptor attack footage, summer wildlife ambience, and relaxing nature video with birds, wetlands, and stormy weather.

00:00dived and caught a monster fish and at this minute he's struggling to swallow the thing it's so big
00:24so hello again it's been a while since i was able to bring you a video i spent the last
00:31few months
00:32back in the uk at home and though i had hoped i would be able to get out and make
00:39some videos
00:40from the uk i guess life took over and i was too busy trying to earn my living
00:48but now i'm back in greece and back at lake at guinea and it's full-on summer it's the third
00:56of august
01:00incredibly hot incredibly humid and you will see a completely different side to the lake
01:09than that of the winter which if you've been following my videos up until now you will have seen
01:18mainly winter and a couple of videos that i made in the spring here
01:24so yeah i'm just taking i've just arrived this afternoon and i'm taking before i go to the hotel
01:31a quick drive around the northern and eastern side of the lake to see what the conditions are like
01:41and to see what species of bird are are around and so far i've seen
01:48little egret gray herons uh the purple herons aren't there that were there in the spring
01:56there's lots of glossy ibis around as well which is cool so we'll have a go photographing them at some
02:01point um what else uh bee eaters uh not so many as we're here in the spring
02:10but still plenty um and there's uh dozens of both white pelicans and the dalmatian pelicans as well
02:21they're quite far out so we'll do that from the boat
02:28and in the meantime i'm heading down to one of the canals that runs off the lake here
02:36where i hope to see and photograph some little bitten this afternoon but we'll see
02:49there's another place down there
02:56okay yeah so i'll catch up with you in a little while hopefully from the canal
02:59with uh some little bitmins in the shot so i'll see you there
03:06so
03:40so i'm at the canal
03:43and what i'm trying to do now is find the gap in the reeds
03:49that i might park up at and see if i can wait out
04:12it's quite well hidden behind the reeds so i can't go let's try further along
04:19see if i have any more luck
04:26oh and the gray herring just took off
04:34you can probably hear squawking away there
04:45big wasp just here
04:51i've not actually seen those in the uk
04:54big wasps here with the massively long dangly legs
05:04hidden combine
05:14much around
05:15and go around the other side i think
05:39i might just have to choose a spot
05:44and wait it out
05:48another squawker there
05:54not so far my little bitmins this year
05:59this gives me a pretty good view onto the canal
06:05so i'm gonna hang around here for a little bit and see if anything turns up
06:10so i'll see you then hopefully
06:16so i have a squawk o'heron just behind me in the reeds here it's quite a nice clean shot
06:25just a little bit of video for me
06:34so
06:35gray herring in this place
06:36just so
06:39fly through the gray herons
06:44a little squawk o'rriving
07:05Dived and caught a monster fish and at this minute he's struggling to
07:12swallow the thing, it's so big. That's so funny, so cool, I wonder if he'll manage it, oop I think
07:30he's going to try it, where is he?
07:42He's gone into the shade to try and swallow in there.
08:05Still struggling.
08:28It's so good.
08:35It's so good.
09:04I hope this video is going to be fine.
09:06in focus because he's gone in behind the reeds. So the reeds are sort of blowing in the wind
09:14in front of the herring and I'm not sure if it's focusing on him or it's picking up the
09:22reeds and refocusing on them. I hope they'll stay sharp. It's now four
09:34minutes that he's been struggling with this fish. Oh, and he's dropped it. Noo!
09:46It got away.
09:52Poor thing. He thought he had the meal of a lifetime there I think and it got away from him.
10:07And I think the fish actually was still alive. He escaped.
10:16I guess that's how it goes sometimes.
10:22I'm taking a drink of water now. Trying to recover his composure.
10:29Well, that was really fun. Poor little guy. A bit off more than he could chew.
10:40Right, this time I will make a move. I'll see you in a bit.
10:44The weather is starting to close in which doesn't surprise me with the level of heat and humidity
10:52that looks like a thunderstorm is starting to build.
10:58So, I've arrived where I saw the, there's a few down there still, the Glossy Ivers,
11:07which is at a place we call the Triangle, at the north-eastern corner of the lake.
11:16So, I've parked up behind this big flame tree and I'm gonna try and make my way down to the
11:26water search
11:26without scaring off the birds though. I doubt I'll be successful in that.
11:35But we'll give it a go and see what happens.
11:41So, bear with me whilst I get everything together.
12:09So, unfortunately I was predicted most of the Glossy Ibis flew as they're quite flighty little birds.
12:16And I'm left with a few Squakos and a bunch of more hens.
12:22But, um, I'll give it a little bit of time. Maybe they'll come back.
12:29Hopefully before the rain comes. You can probably hear the thunder rumbling there.
12:39It sounds like we're in for a bit of a storm later.
12:43But, uh, with any luck it'll hold off for a little while at least.
12:49Okay, so I'm gonna settle in here for a little bit and see what comes along.
13:07Shall I start again?
13:11Okay.
13:12I start in with a little more.
13:14Right?
13:18Alright.
13:20Let's go.
13:22Hmm.
13:24Right?
13:25If you want to go somewhere.
13:26Right?
13:27Hmm.
13:27Hmm.
13:27Hmm.
13:28Hmm.
13:29Hmm.
13:29Maybe.
13:30Hmm.
13:30Hmm.
13:30Hmm.
13:30Hmm.
13:30Hmm.
13:30Hmm.
13:31I'm.
13:33Hmm.
13:34Hmm.
13:38Well that was pretty exciting, it was very far away, but I think it's a gosfolk, I can't
13:45be sure.
13:47He came down and had a go at one of the little egrets, didn't get him, and then he was
13:52chased
13:52off by all the cormorants.
13:56We'll have a look at that later on the laptop, it should make a nice photo, I'm hoping.
14:01I couldn't quite grab focus as he flew off, but whilst he was attacking the little egret,
14:08I think I managed to get a decent shot there.
14:11Nothing on video unfortunately, it all happened so quickly, but that was very cool.
14:18The thunder as you can hear is still rumbling away behind me.
14:26Today there mostly has been a day of our squawco herons it seems, wherever I've been it's
14:32just full of squawcos.
14:35There are other birds too, but it's the squawcos that have been the less flighty of them all,
14:43and they've stuck around it to let me photograph them.
14:49I think the frogs must be sensing the storm coming as well, because they've all started
14:53croaking away as well.
15:05So the purple heron just turned up.
15:10Chuck the squawco heron off.
15:13It's perch.
15:16They've got these stunning birds, I love purple herons.
15:26Big lightning strike, and the rain has come.
15:29Big lightning strike, and the rain has come.
15:30Big lightning strike and the rain has come.
16:06There's been shelter under the tree, in the rain, let's see if I can show you.
16:24Damsel flies.
16:40So, I think I'm going to call it a day here and head back to the hotel for a bit
16:47of dinner.
16:51And get an early start in the morning and hopefully bring you another video.
16:55I'm still not sure what I'm going to do for tomorrow, but I'll have a think tonight and
17:01we'll see.
17:02So, thank you for watching, I hope you've enjoyed this one and sorry it's been so long
17:07since the last one.
17:09So, I hope you'll join me again tomorrow.
17:10Thanks for watching.
