00:03So hello again. I've just literally finished up filming the herons down by the lake there,
00:14which will be the previous video to this one. And I had thought of including this bit in that as
00:21well, but I think it might end up being way too long to retain people's attention. So here it
00:29is a separate video. And what I'm going to do is driving down now to the canal, which leads off
00:38from the lake on the eastern side.
00:42And in previous years on that canal, I've been able to photograph and film a little bit, which is a
00:50stunning bird and a fantastic eagle hunter as well.
00:55Absolutely deadly to frogs and tadpoles. So yeah, this little canal has got a few reeds. I think they've suffered
01:08over the years, the reed beds there.
01:11But the little bitters like stalking through them and finding frogs and things to eat. So, and they're really brave
01:22too.
01:22They, I mean, they don't, they're totally unfazed. At least they have been when I've been photographing them.
01:30And there's been times when I've been literally just shooting straight out the window down into the canal.
01:39And they're six, seven, eight feet away from me and they're completely unfazed by my presence. So hopefully they've returned.
01:49Ten days or so ago when I went by the canal, I couldn't see them. So I'm hoping today I
01:58might have a little bit more luck.
02:00So I shall catch up with you when I'm done. See you later.
02:08Okay, so I'm down by the canal and I've got myself set up with a tripod outside the window.
02:16Which should hopefully make focusing a little bit easier because when I rest it on the, on the beam bag,
02:26the focusing ring is against the beam bag and it makes it really difficult to focus.
02:32So I've set it up on the tripod outside. And I'm opposite a nice stand of reeds,
02:38which is fairly open rather than being close and clumped, which I know the little bitens prefer,
02:46because it gives them that much more space to stalk through.
02:52So hopefully it's just a question of time and one will come along.
02:58There's lots of great reed warbler here as well. So I've got those to focus on as well whilst I'm
03:07waiting.
03:07So, okay, so I'm hoping it's just a question of time now.
03:15And I'll get back to you as soon as I have something interesting in the frame.
03:20Hopefully a little bit and see another look.
03:26So, I'm really happy with what I just spotted.
03:30Um, not a little bit and basically a little bit and flew past down the canal.
03:35And as he did, I followed him down, um, just watching him.
03:39And as I watched him fly down the canal, this bird flew across that I didn't really recognize.
03:45And it perched up in the tree, just behind me.
03:49And I jumped out of the car as quietly as I could, as slowly as I could, saying I jumped.
03:56But, um, anyway, the bird perched on the tree and I managed to get a little bit of video of
04:02it.
04:02Uh, and it's a first for me. It's a greatest spotted cuckoo.
04:05Which I didn't even know we had here.
04:08And I'm really happy with that. I wish I could have gotten a still of it though as well.
04:12Um, anyhow, then hopefully a little bit and we'll fly back again and, uh, visit this stand of reeds as
04:19well.
04:20But that was just awesome. Uh, really exciting.
04:26It's not the most stable of footage as I was desperately trying to get the camera focused and, um, level.
04:34But, uh, hopefully it will stabilize in post.
04:39Absolutely stunning bird.
04:43Well, there's a little bit of stable footage on it.
04:48Beautiful.
04:50So I'm really happy with that. I've never seen one before.
04:55Anyhow, back to the little bit and I'm still waiting.
04:59And hopefully, like I said, I watched him fly down and hopefully he will fly back again and visit this
05:05stand of reeds.
05:07So, uh, back with you in a bit.
05:09Okay, so one flew in.
05:12He went in behind the reeds.
05:14And he slowly made his way forward, uh, through the reeds.
05:19Uh, stalking, whatever.
05:20He made a couple of dives, but it was out of, um, out of reach, uh, for me to, um,
05:26get a close-up shot.
05:27And I don't think I could focus fast enough.
05:30But, um, and then, uh, he's just come forward now to the front of the reeds.
05:38And he's just sat there.
05:41Absolutely stunning little bird.
05:44To give you an idea of size, they're about the size of a normal 30cm ruler.
05:50So they're quite small.
06:07So, uh, okay, well hopefully he'll come back.
06:18I also managed to, whilst I was waiting for him, a couple of great reed warblers and also
06:26kingfisher came and was fishing just along here and then flew to the next stand of reeds
06:32as well and I got a brief shot of him there as well before he flew off.
06:37So that was nice too.
06:40I really want some decent hunting shots of the little biton there.
06:49Well hopefully he'll come back.
06:56Okay so I gave up the stand of reeds that I was staking out.
07:04An hour has gone past and the little biton didn't come back so I'm happy with what I
07:13got but I would really like to get some footage of him hunting and some stills too.
07:23I got a couple of stills of him perched but no hunting so I'm gonna drive around the canal
07:35a little bit.
07:36There's a few points, a couple of points that I can cross back and forth from one side to
07:42the other.
07:42the other.
07:45So I shall endeavour to find where he might be at.
07:54Bear with me and hopefully I shall find another individual willing to be photographed or filmed.
08:03The thing is as well they're so well camouflaged.
08:08and small so spotting them is a challenge.
08:33I have one right below me.
08:40So let's see if I can get some footage.
08:49I can't focus.
08:51It's really normal.
08:54I'm that close to him.
08:56Let's switch out the camera.
08:59Let's see if I can do it with a DSLR.
09:25Not the greatest of shots.
09:29Everyone's looking at me.
09:32Okay so I got some really nice shots of him hunting with a, he caught a frog.
09:42Poor little frog.
09:43I mean he just squeezed the life out of him and then swallowed him whole really really quickly.
09:55So I got a nice series of shots there but I would really really like to get it on video
10:01now.
10:04So that's what we're going to concentrate on for the next few minutes here and see if I
10:10can see if he'll hunt again and I can get some footage of it.
10:14Let's see if I have any more luck this time with the video.
10:18Okay with the crop sensor.
10:21On the 500mm I was just so close.
10:24It was just his entire head and beak that I was getting in shot.
10:30So I sort of, I took the decision to risk losing him and switch out the lens for my 70
10:39-200mm
10:40and now I've got the whole of him in frame.
10:43And hopefully he'll do a bit of hunting for us now.
10:50So fingers crossed, he's just sat on the reeds at the minute.
10:57Keeping perfectly still waiting for his opportunity.
11:28It's just a question of patience now.
11:31Okay so unfortunately he didn't hunt again here for the video.
11:37And he flew across to the other reeds and I have a feeling, a horrible feeling, because
11:46I could hear a little chick, probably one of the reed warbler's chicks, squeaking away.
11:57He might have been attracted like that, to go in and raid the nest.
12:06I'm hoping that's not the case.
12:11He's just come out again.
12:13I'm going to switch lenses because he's far away again now.
12:25He's gone back in again.
12:28So he's gone in high up in the reeds.
12:33So he's not looking for frogs at the base.
12:45of the reeds by the water, he's actually gone up high into the middle of the reeds.
12:54And I think, I have a horrible feeling, at least he's looking at the nest, maybe grabbing a chick.
13:06Oh my goodness.
13:11Nature can be brutal.
13:18That is the nest.
13:22And I just saw the parent reed warbler just fly into it.
13:27And he went in somewhere else though.
13:30So maybe he's not going for the nest.
13:34With any luck.
13:36I don't particularly want to take his picture with a nut.
13:41And then she just chased him away.
13:46There's another one that chased it away.
13:47Hang on, he's come down onto the reeds.
13:57So there was one that was chased away.
14:03The one that went in, that I had been filming here,
14:06went across there, went in the reeds,
14:09and then was chased out by another male.
14:15So that's interesting.
14:17Okay, so that's all focused.
14:20Let's see if he comes out.
14:21The second one.
14:23The first one flew off over that way.
14:26So maybe I'll drive there if this one doesn't come,
14:28and see if I can spot him again.
14:31Back with our original male.
14:35Who is below me again.
14:37I've had to switch out lenses again.
14:42And hopefully this time he will hunt.
14:46And catch another frog.
14:48Okay, so he just caught a massive frog.
14:52And I managed to get it on film.
14:57So I'm really happy about that.
14:58So photos and footage of the little bitten hunting.
15:07He hasn't left.
15:08He's still there.
15:09So I'm gonna stick around until he decides to leave.
15:14Maybe we'll get another hunting.
15:19But I think for the moment,
15:22I'm gonna call it quits on this video.
15:27And I hope you've enjoyed watching such as it is.
15:33Amazing little bird with a little bitten.
15:36So yeah.
15:37Thanks again for watching.
15:39And I shall see you again soon.
15:40Bye for now.
16:14Bye for now.
16:45Bye for now.
17:11Bye for now.
17:45Bye for now.
18:07Bye for now.
18:40Bye for now.
19:05Bye for now.
19:07Bye.
19:35Bye for now.
