00:22Hai Coach, bagaimana Anda?
00:26Kabar baik.
00:27Kabar baik.
00:27Atau dalam kultur Indonesia kita katakan, sudah makan.
00:31Sudah makan.
00:33Sudah makan, sudah sarapan?
00:35Sudah sarapan.
00:38Ya.
00:40Ada apa-apa pembicara lain yang Anda belajar?
00:45Saya boleh minta kopi dan susu panas.
00:51Bungkus.
00:52Itu yang sempat.
00:54Itu sangat standar.
00:55Itu yang digunakan.
00:56Femal Indonesia.
00:57Ya.
00:59Baiklah.
00:59Baiklah.
01:00Saya ingin mengucapkan selamat menikmati Indonesia dengan saling pertama.
01:06title in 35 years so i see that indonesian fans have a massive expectation uh towards um
01:17towards the football scene here so how do you handle that pressure at turning it into a fuel
01:25for the the a positive fuel maybe for the players
01:32well it's the reason i came here it's the the reason we do what we do it's it's that that
01:39pressure that expectation the scrutiny and the consequence it's what drives you to
01:47push limits for your players push your own boundaries but just to show people when you
01:53do it what's possible what what really is i think the expectation here is uh born out of a
02:01frustration a starvation of just not feeling the success frequently enough and when you've been
02:09six finals and not one a final i can imagine that's just years of build-up of hurt generations
02:17generations that haven't been able to celebrate together so listening to a a man in the airport
02:25telling me he was able to celebrate the trophy win with his son and his dad so a generation sat
02:36around
02:37the tv watching this is what it's about it's just about reminding indonesians that we can't uh it's
02:46possible and you inspire hope i mean i've been a kid myself i've been a football fan myself where
02:57england's 1990 world cup inspired me to go on and be a football player coach it's moments that only sport
03:06can bring something out of people and that's what drives us not not the pressure of it i guess it's
03:14just
03:15the opportunity that comes the other side of success you you know you can make fear people feel stronger
03:24happier so it's basically the possibility of um rising from the ashes as you say yeah i think it's it
03:32is
03:34rising from the ashes but once you've risen from the ashes you put it somewhere where somebody else has
03:41to take it to another place and then somebody else has to take it further and i think this is
03:47this journey this country's on i think parkeric to here his vision for football in this country's helped
03:54take it to to a to a level and we're now taking it to that next level and that next
04:02level
04:04will be the 2030 world cup that's that's the mission yeah i'm gonna get to that later but before we
04:12get to
04:13it i have a simple question i'd like to break down to you not only about interpersonal dynamics within
04:20the team but also how you um um how you manage to um because uh from what i have uh
04:30seen the way you
04:34direct not direct the way you coach your team from new zealand toronto the canadian men women you put
04:42culture first before tactics always the way i see it always so how do you adjust that when you come
04:51to
04:51jakarta for me high performance is high performance we're in the business of human performance right
05:01but we're in a very unique field because this group of athletes this group of society become situational
05:12narcissists because of the realities of what they deal with they're in a very unique
05:20life style that they have scrutiny every day they get idolized or hated one or the other
05:29they have people offering their money they have people taking money away
05:34they are every day comparing themselves with other people so they become very protective
05:41they they can become very insular and that goes against everything that great teams are about great
05:50teams are people who surrender their egos who sacrifice for a greater good who are willing to mask your
05:57weaknesses and heighten your strengths in in the goal of a common cause that's not what modern sport is
06:06really well if you look at most athletes they're in survival mode they're surviving day in day out to
06:15keep their job to keep their jersey to keep their playing minutes to keep the fans off their back or
06:22to keep
06:22the fans happy to get another contract to get a better contract i mean this is this is part of
06:31i think the fight of many athletes and if you listen to the modern athlete now if anyone listens to
06:38high
06:38performance podcasts and you listen to a professional footballer they'll tell you we're in survival mode
06:47we're surviving is that how you see most of the players yes without a doubt it's it's a survival
06:53reality they're in a very privileged position because of the wealth and they get to do what they enjoy
07:02but they only enjoy it when they're playing they only enjoy it when the fans are writing nice things
07:09and when they're getting paid what they feel they're worth so when you talk about the element of culture
07:16before tactics for me it's about tapping into each individual and understanding where they're at in
07:25this cycle how far down the continuum are they this way or they're on this side of it are they
07:32okay
07:33and then all of us every human operates at their best if you want creativity if you want connection if
07:42want people to work as a team together they have to feel safe you have to feel safe you don't
07:49work
07:50collectively if you don't feel safe and safety at the heart of that is trust
07:57and trust is elements of a culture that you create a brotherhood a sisterhood where
08:03you agree some common values and those common values aren't words they become actions
08:09and those actions are celebrated because the coach is bringing attention to those things and you build
08:15leaders within the team that you know espouse those values and you remind the leaders that they do that
08:23constantly then you build rituals routines that bring people together silly things that we'll do in our
08:31environment fun activities that every day they have to connect they don't get a choice whether we've won
08:38lost drawn a game they have to spend time in a way that's more than just football so that's part
08:46of
08:47the culture before tactics because you can have tactics and you can put tactics before culture but the
08:55reality is when things get tough on the field and inevitably in high performance sport they do
09:05teams disconnect under pressure under fatigue so the stronger this is the less disconnect you get in the
09:16inevitable heat that comes so if you want somebody to really focus on their their job on the field you
09:26have to
09:26to remove the distractions of the internal competition the internal fights okay so that's that's what we do so the
09:38culture is the foundation
09:39yeah the foundation is a value system a behavioral system that leads to winning
09:48that's it this isn't some hocus pocus you know rainbows and unicorns and fairies and blue skies this is
09:58everything everything has to lead to winning and if you want consistent winning which you know
10:05winning is going to take dealing with adversity and you want men women to connect and bond in adversity
10:14then that value system better be strong and you're just seeing that in fifa our scene this team bent
10:20but it didn't break and when players are fatigued and tactics go out of the window
10:28because fatigue ultimately their minds their bodies can't do what their minds want to do at the speed
10:34that's required then it comes down to the togetherness the collective will the desire to bring a first
10:45trophy to indonesia for 35 years to come back to why we're here we have a cord of our shirt
10:54maximal effort always and i'm going to commit that to you because i know you're going to commit that to
11:00me
11:00and we've got to look each other in the eye and in the mirror after again yeah this is the
11:07depth of
11:09brotherhood that we're building here so the the brotherhood that you were building i would like to
11:18focus on that part because is that the kind of mentality you were not forcing you were
11:25uh put on the players here uh and how do you um how do you bring together that kind of
11:36mentality
11:37uh to the locally developed players and the uh the diaspora players do they have what kind of bond
11:46activity that kind of mentality well i think it's it's learned from my side as a coach it's studying
11:54other winning teams but it's the experience if you go to an olympic podium for the first time in a
12:02country's history in 86 years then you go back to back it's never been done in a century in a
12:09country
12:09men or women in an olympic sport and in those experiences you realize this isn't a straight path
12:18you don't start game one and then end up on a podium and it was all just a vertical line
12:25like we're
12:26progressing yeah it's tough it is tough and mindset is at the core of everything so you have
12:34a concept the mindset skill set structure so i can put a system and tactical framework in place yes
12:44i can use all of your skills and you have some elite skills but if your mindset's not right
12:51if you're fragile yeah mindset will undermine skill set and structure every time so you
13:02always have to prepare the mentality of the group for specific games if you're playing against for
13:09for example um a team an underdog team that you know this is their cup final yeah but where we
13:20should beat them every day we should beat them you have to prepare the mindset right because if
13:26something doesn't go quite right in that game a referee decision or the opposition team start to
13:33get a bit luck the mindset can then affect skill set and structure people don't focus anymore on their
13:40talent they focus on oh my god what are the media going to say we're nil all and it's the
13:4670th minute
13:47and we haven't scored and i'm going to get killed on social media i'm going to lose my contract i'm
13:51maybe the coach won't select this again and then the mind overwhelm this happens in games no different
13:57to you as a professional journalist there'll be moments in your career where you've allowed the mind
14:04to override just the basic talent that you have you overthink yeah i experienced that right now if
14:12we're being very honest with each other yeah that's true um you've mentioned three components
14:18mindset structure and what skill set and skill set and you often talk is that one of the pillars that
14:26you often mention because you have skill tactics physical mental and sports science if that's correct
14:35me if i'm wrong so how far along is the sports science side with the national squad yeah well i
14:43brought
14:43uh dr cesar milan with me he's been to the olympic podiums uh from bronze the gold medals he's been
14:57on the
14:57world cup journey with us with canada so he's bringing all of that international experience
15:03to indonesia and laying the foundations for world cup qualification because we've lived it
15:10and he understands the realities of working with players who have to travel from europe our players
15:18had to travel from europe to north america to to perform and then the realities of for example our
15:25world cup qualification we played three games in 10 days for example we started in
15:36honduras playing in 30 plus degrees heat two days later we're flying to canada to play in minus 13
15:47on a plastic field a turf field of course three days later we're flying to el salvador to play in
15:5430
15:55degrees heat extreme weather extreme weather yes yes yes three day turnarounds travel over different
16:04continents and countries time zones we've been doing that for 15 20 years together so with with dr milan
16:15he's trying to make sure that we are closing the gap on experiences that teams like japan australia
16:27korea saudi arabia who are consistently qualifying for the world cup they're building these experiences
16:34of how to qualify indonesia hasn't built that experience as an organization and it's not just
16:41the coaching team when i say organization we're talking about logistics our social media team
16:49our video team our commercial team how to deal with it all when it starts to get bigger
16:56so we're bringing certain experiences like when wilco qualification starts we have to send people
17:04to the country prior to us arriving to have everything set it's not something they've done in the past
17:11but it's something that we did with canada in our qualification campaign so when you say about
17:17sports science dr milan will have a chef ready in an environment with our nutritional reality set up
17:29specific to our players so we're not relying on a hotel i could give you anything yeah so there's there's
17:36elements we uh we're starting to close the gap on world cup qualification experience that's been missing
17:44here that our competitors have gained over a 30-year period it is it's that specific to your treatment
17:54in terms of sports science or is this something other coaches of them i haven't seen like i said since
18:02i
18:02since i came here we conducted a very thorough survey you know with players staff to understand the
18:11last cycle of world cup qualification the two-year period what went well what didn't go so well what
18:20are the players need more of or less of where are the gaps there were gaps in operational areas there
18:27were gaps in logistical areas there were gaps in cognitive load emotional load like there were
18:34gaps in a lot of areas but there were also things that were done very well so for me it's
18:40just been
18:40trying to balance and understand right i can start a feel this is the the biggest and most important
18:49gap we got to close now this is where we can bring our experience of world cup qualification in
18:54and conquer calve to asia so i would like to transition a little bit you've on previous
19:05statements you've said that you've recently spoke about how pundits here analyze the national team's
19:12tactics um what's the core of um the tactical identity that you want to build so that the players are
19:23not
19:23uh so the players aren't confused by the demand of modern um modern football transitions like because you've
19:34mentioned how like uh they're not having the same experience as you so what gives you the credibility
19:41for you to go on give this commentary like how do you know i think i think my my take
19:48on this is
19:51what i think it's when you when you listen to football analysts
20:00what you hope is they've had some relevant experiences so in football countries i've worked
20:08whether it's new zealand canada england yes if you're going to comment on the national team
20:17typically you've played national football you can empathize yes from the players perspective from the
20:26tactical perspectives or you've been a coach you've been in the locker room you understand when you travel
20:35away to this venue in these conditions so the the detail that you can provide tends to be at a
20:44level
20:48it's considered and it's empathetic as well it's not about whether it's positive or negative i don't
20:54care like it's just that stuff's noise what i'm trying to do is help the country ask for more
21:01like why why isn't for example bam bam you know with a a person who has had a lot of
21:09international
21:10experience why isn't he talking about the national team in in the media what like because that's who i
21:20would listen to yeah and i'm hoping people like yori amat when he ends his career who's played at the
21:28highest levels who's walked in the shoes of players who's experienced a lot of different coaches in a
21:35lot of different countries you hope that someone like him can walk in to give perspective good or bad
21:43doesn't matter but they've lived the experiences so it's more
21:51the sensationalism that comes with or the responsibility that comes with journalism
21:58it's making sure that if you haven't had those experiences then talk to people who have had those
22:05experiences bring bring an ex-professional into your studio to talk and someone that's been in the modern
22:14game not somebody that was playing 30 years ago you know when football looked this way football is
22:22different now that i'm i'm trying to raise the level at all all levels in the game here i'm not
22:29above
22:30i'm not saying i'm above critique of course i'm not but i would i would love to hear it from
22:37um i don't know thierry henry he's he's he's he's commentated on my games before yeah yeah yeah or
22:47an ex-national team player no problem so i just think we we have to be more responsible because
22:56we we as a country need to lift this team more
23:03the the the the the it's too easy to knock the team down and that has an impact on our
23:09national team
23:09players that makes sense because you know it's um there's a saying in indonesia kalau tidak mengomentari
23:19tim nas itu nggak akan makan in english if you're not commenting on the national squad you're not gonna get
23:25fed
23:26yeah unfortunately so um i'm gonna move forward to asian cup and world cup so the asian cup first
23:35asian cup first looking ahead into the asian cup um will you bring more diaspora players
23:46i think every every day every week we have our people looking and working on different projects that
23:54we have on diaspora players we have people looking every week i'll be at a game this weekend i was
24:00at
24:01a game last weekend this is the beauty of us living in indonesia i can feel the local game so
24:08we have
24:08people watching domestically we have people watching internationally to bring the best players here that
24:16have indonesian blood that's our mission to bring more tier one tier two players because those players
24:28are what take you to the next level is there any particular um players that you've taken interest
24:36yeah i mean there's there's obvious obvious players out there that uh are well noted on social social media
24:44i i i think i to respect the player and their their circumstances it's really important to
24:52to be respectful this is where i have to keep and try and raise the standards because ultimately when you
24:59start name dropping players are in their processes as well whether it's they're trying to decide between one
25:08country and another how many how many we have we have 10 players on our current watch list on our
25:25current list
25:28but 10 but 10 10 10 is long long term conversations it's difficult to say because uh the country has
25:39high
25:39expectations so for me in this moment i learned a promise and over deliver hopefully
25:46well fortunately we have uh concluded our interview for today uh thank you so much for having us
25:53um and um in indonesia we say semoga selesai so hopefully we stay healthy always thank you
