00:13Weed's is hitting all the high notes for the second year in a row as renowned musicians
00:18cover the theme song of Showtime's breakthrough series written by Malvina Reynolds in 1962
00:26as a biting commentary on post-World War II sprawl Little Boxes still resonates today
00:31When I first wrote the song into the script of Malvina we weren't sure we'd be able to afford her
00:36so we got some covers then we got what we wanted and Mark said hey I've got all these kind
00:41of fun covers of it
00:42you know why don't we try to open this up and it really became a watershed
00:46Little by Little the covers of Little Boxes took on a life of their own
00:50It's very popular a lot of people are doing it on spec and sending it in
00:54Some of them are very funny
00:55Little boxes made a turkey turkey
01:01Little boxes on the hillside
01:04Little boxes are the same
01:06Joan Baez is doing one
01:08Linkin Park, Jesse Mraz, Devendra Bant
01:11This year the writers and producers have received over 90 submissions from artists thinking outside the Little Box
01:17and hoping to have their version end up in the opening credits
01:22Grammy and Academy Award winning pianist and songwriter Randy Newman let Showtime into the studio for his take
01:33Or two on the song
01:36I love the song
01:37You know I hadn't heard it in a long time
01:39Usually songs like that about suburbia
01:42They're so right on the nose
01:44And they stereotype it
01:45And she does stereotype it of course
01:47But she's not lying
01:48I mean there's a great deal of truth to it
01:50It has been for a couple hundred years
01:53The lead you know lives in a house like everybody else
01:56And yet her life and her living is so totally at odds with the people in the Little Boxes
02:02The song's perfect
02:03You can do it a hundred different ways
02:05The Little Boxes on the hillside
02:07All way to the university
02:10Little Boxes
02:11Da da da da da da da da da da da
02:14And I thought about it
02:15And I like her version very much
02:17You know
02:17Little Boxes on the hillside
02:20Little Boxes made of ticky tacky
02:23That song will live
02:24I think because I did it
02:25Little Boxes all the same
02:27There's a green one
02:29And a pink one
02:30And a blue one
02:32And a yellow one
02:33And they're all made
02:34And they're all made
02:34And they're all made
02:43And they're all made
02:43And they're all made
02:43And they're all made
02:43And they're all made
02:44And they're all made
02:44And they're all made
02:44And they're all made
02:45And they're all made
