Easter Eggs To James Bond Gadget: "The Ghetto Blaster" In Maniac Cop ('88+) Movie Series

While recently viewing the Maniac Cop trilogy of action / horror films I picked up on some possible easter egg references to a gadget shown in  the James Bond spy films.   The Ghetto Blaster is based on a portable stereo, also known as a "boombox", which became popular worldwide in the mid 1980's. It was shown in The Living Daylights (1987). Q shows this off in his lab, it fires a rocket at a mannequin.   - Actor Robert Z'Dar played the titular cop, Officer Matt Cordell in all 3 starting in 1988.  - Laurene Landon played Officer Theresa Mallory and  also an amazon warrior in 1986 post-apocalyptic action film, America 3000. The movie poster for this shows a mutant holding a boombox stereo. - When you get to sequel Maniac Cop 2 in 1990 the connections get stronger, Robert Davi joined the cast in this as a hard boiled police lieutenant. Davi also played drug lord Franz Sanchez in '89 Bond movie License To Kill.  - Director Sam Raimi plays a news reporter in Maniac Cop 1&2. He envisioned 1990 superhero Darkman. Star, Liam Neeson was a favorite tom play James Bond in the late '80's / early '90's. - Another wild connection to The Ghetto Blaster: Danny Trejo appears in Maniac Cop 2 as a prisoner. He was also in Robert Rodriguez action film Desperado in 1995. A famous scene in this has a Mariachi shoot a rocket out of a guitar case in a similar fashion to what is shown in Bond.  - The Ghetto Blaster made another appearance in 2002 Bond film Die Another day, it can bee seen in the background in Q's warehouse. - Michael Madsen plays an intelligence operative in that movie and worked with Quentin Tarantino & Danny Trejo (Chasing Ghosts - 2005).

00:07Bond spy films based on the writings of British author Ian Fleming.

00:14And this would be the Ghetto Blaster, a boombox, a portable stereo system which became popular in the mid-1980s.

00:23This was shown in The Living Daylights in 1987 starring Timothy Dalton.

00:29A cue played by Desmond Llewellyn demonstrates this.

00:33The stereo fires a rocket at a mannequin.

00:37So recently viewing The Maniac Cop, a slasher action films directed by William Lustig and written by Larry Cohen.

00:47I was able to visualize a reference to this actor Robert Zadar starred in these three films as the titular

00:57cop officer Matt Cordell.

01:00The first film was out in 1988 with a cast that featured Tom Atkins, Bruce Campbell, Laureen Landon, Richard Roundtree,

01:10and William Smith.

01:11Now, Laureen Landon played an Amazon warrior in the 1986 sci-fi film America 3000.

01:21This starred Chuck Wagner.

01:22The movie poster for this film features one of the mutant characters holding a boombox.

01:30When you get to the sequel, Maniac Cop 2, in 1990, Robert Davi joined the cast in this installment.

01:38And he played drug lord Frank Sanchez in the 1989 Bond movie License to Kill.

01:45Talisa Soto and Anthony Zerbe were also in this.

01:48And further hints to back up this theory, director Sam Raimi has a part in the first two Maniac Cop

01:56films as a news reporter.

01:59He envisioned 1990 superhero film Darkman starring Liam Neeson and Larry Drake.

02:07Neeson was among the frontrunners to play the famous spy in the early 1990s.

02:13And another wild connection to the ghetto blaster and James Bond can be seen through the presence of Danny Trejo,

02:22who played a prisoner in Maniac Cop 2.

02:26He played a thug in Robert Rodriguez's 1995 action film Desperado.

02:33This starred Antonio Banderas, Salma Hayat, Steve Buscemi, Cheech Marin, and Quentin Tarantino.

02:41There's a famous scene in this in which one of the mariachi shoots a rocket out of a guitar case

02:51in a very similar fashion to what's shown in Bond.

02:55The ghetto blaster made another appearance this time in Die Another Day in 2002 starring Pierce Brosnan.

03:02It can be seen in the background in Q's Warehouse.

03:08After Michael Madsen played Damian Falco, an intelligence operative in Die Another Day,

03:15he worked with director Quentin Tarantino over the years as a Danny Trejo.

03:21These two were in a few movies together including 2005 Mystery, Chasing Ghosts, starring Shannon Sosaman, Gary Busey, Meatloaf, and

03:33Michael Rooker.
