Hollywood and Alex Donno react to the latest Miami Dolphins quarterback situation after another rough performance from Malik Willis. They break down why the front office's evaluation of Willis is so concerning, compare the soft culture of Dolphins practices to the high-intensity energy at Miami Hurricanes practices, and discuss whether Miami fans should just root for the No. 1 overall draft pick.

00:00Oh, boy, we got a long one about Malik Willis here from the 973 that just came in right now.
00:05Every Dolphin fan is down on Malik Willis, including me.
00:08I don't think Malik Willis was brought here to be the Dolphins quarterback of the future.
00:13It goes on to talk about that in New Jersey.
00:16Pat, thank you, Pat, for the for the text.
00:19Dono, I don't know about this Malik Willis situation.
00:21I wanted it to work.
00:23Maybe it was just me trying to, you know, will it into existence, trying to speak it into existence.
00:30That it was going to happen.
00:31I also I thought that the guys in the front office here, you know, Halfley and John Eric Sullivan.
00:39They seem to be kind of, I don't want to say all in, but, man, they seem to be pretty
00:44high on this guy.
00:45Like he was going to come in here and maybe be the guy.
00:50He stunk on Sunday.
00:52He was terrible on Sunday.
00:57Dono, I don't know what to think anymore.
01:00Everything I seem to think is wrong.
01:02So we're going to perk join us at eight o'clock.
01:05But this Malik Willis thing seems seems troubling at best.
01:10And you pair that with another troubling situation, which is like, I don't know what quarterback to take first.
01:15Even if you were going to take a quarterback.
01:17Right.
01:18With the first pick in the draft.
01:19So that's also another if if the Dolphins tank properly and do end up with that first pick.
01:26The Titans are terrible.
01:27The Titans might not win a game.
01:29I got to think the Chargers win one at some point.
01:33Right.
01:33I would think although Mike, Mike McDaniel and Justin Herbert are doing whatever they can to make sure that doesn't
01:38happen.
01:39They're running the same offense.
01:41It seems like from from the limited stuff that I've seen, Don, granted, this is all red zone related.
01:46But from what I have seen from the Chargers, it looks like they're doing a lot of that quick screen.
01:51And, you know, yeah, that and the stuff that worked here because the Dolphins had two ridiculously fast receivers.
01:58They don't have that in L.A.
02:01And so it is not working out right now for Herbert.
02:03Every time Herbert throws, I don't say he looks like Tua, but, you know, he's thrown to the other team.
02:09It seems like every time he drops back to the throw.
02:12So it's Herbert and Tua.
02:13They're like the Spider-Man meme now.
02:15Look at each other.
02:16You don't know who's who, but on the Malik Willis thing, it's, you know, there's certain things I want to
02:22still give this front office a certain benefit of the doubt because a lot of their rookies are playing well.
02:28So it's like, all right, there are there are signs that John Eric Sullivan knows how to draft at least.
02:34But the Malik Willis thing, it's like it's indefensible at this point, because like you mentioned, nobody knows Malik Willis
02:41better than Sullivan and Halfley because they watched him at every single practice.
02:46And Green Bay.
02:47And yeah, they didn't give him like Sean Watson money or something, but they paid him a reasonable amount of
02:53money to come and play quarterback here.
02:55So they definitely were investing in Malik Willis.
02:58So anyone who's like, well, no, they know he sucks and they want to tank with him.
03:02You could tank with what was already on the roster.
03:05You didn't need to go out and get Malik Willis if you're trying to tank.
03:08So they obviously thought they see something in this guy.
03:12So, yeah, I mean, if Willis doesn't find a way to turn things around and I have a hard time
03:18believing he will based on this five game sample size, then, you know, do you entirely trust Sullivan to select
03:26your next quarterback?
03:27If there's clearly something off with the Malik Willis evaluation?
03:31Yeah.
03:31What well said there, Don, that was my concern, too, is that, you know, this guy or these guys seemed
03:37very high.
03:38And how many times have I heard people say he spent all that time in Green Bay with him?
03:42You know, they must know.
03:44And, yeah, it's very concerning right now that how bad he is.
03:50Like, he just looks very, you know, lost and off.
03:55You know, he's running.
03:57You know, Donna, they had a first and goal at the one and he's running backwards and takes a sack.
04:02Like, what are you doing, man?
04:03I mean, it's just like kind of a lot of rookie type stuff.
04:06And I know that he's younger, you know, in as far as like games played, he's younger.
04:11But that stuff has got to got to be very concerning.
04:18And this texture says maybe we gave Willis 40 million to tank.
04:21It's it's it's a possible conspiracy wrinkle, Dono.
04:25That's why, though, you had you had bad quarterbacks already on the roster.
04:30You could have taken.
04:31You probably could have rolled two out there and, you know, accomplish the right thing.
04:34Maybe they thought Malik Willis gave him the worst chance, the best chance to lose.
04:38And they that they decided they'd bring him in there.
04:41And and figure out, figure out how to lose with him.
04:44But I got to tell you, though, too, I saw a mock draft.
04:47I don't even know where this one was.
04:48I don't know why people are doing mock drafts this time of year.
04:50But I saw a mock draft that had the Dolphins taking the Texas receiver because they fell to like third
04:57or fourth or something in this mock draft.
04:59And they took the Texas receiver Coleman.
05:02Oh, my God, Dono, if that happens, I'm going to just cry.
05:06I'm sure he's I'm sure he's fine.
05:08But, man, you know, I don't know.
05:11I think he prizes, Dono.
05:12I want I want the number one prize here.
05:15All right.
05:15We got to sit through this.
05:16This season is brutal.
05:18And we're going to have to sit through this for another.
05:20We're five weeks in there, 17 by my math.
05:24That's 12, 12 weeks, three months, give or take.
05:27Right.
05:28Am I my math fair on that?
05:30It's good enough for me.
05:31Checks out.
05:33So if we got to sit through another three months of this, plus another offseason, so about another almost another
05:40year of this, I'd like to at least end up with the top prize in the draft, like whatever that
05:46may be.
05:46You know, if it ends up being one of these quarterbacks, if Darian Mensa ends up being the guy, if,
05:52you know, Mestamaker ends up being the guy or I have no idea.
05:56Arch Manning ends up being the guy.
05:59Well, who knows?
06:00Um, but I just want the number one.
06:03I just want the pick, at least if we're going to be this bad, I would I would certainly like
06:08the pick.
06:09Wayne says it's crazy with the backpedaling.
06:11Hey, man, I got sold on Amalek Willis.
06:14I did.
06:15And I watched him in practice, too.
06:17This wasn't just, you know, me being sold a bag of crap from the from these, you know, people there.
06:23I watched him in practice and he and maybe I'm just used to watching the other guy practice, but he
06:28looked good in practice.
06:30Like physically, he does have skills.
06:31He does have tools.
06:33He's got an arm.
06:35He's fast.
06:36It's just that, you know, when he when the game, the live bullets are going, he just is not just
06:41does not seem to have it.
06:43So, you know, again, doesn't always translate to to the field.
06:48And, you know, you can the other problem is, Dono, you've you've seen both practices.
06:53You've seen a Dolphins practice and you've seen a Hurricanes practice.
06:57And we went from one to another.
07:00I think basically in the same week, it is much tougher to evaluate players and talent at a Dolphins practice
07:09than it is at a Hurricanes practice.
07:11The Hurricanes go at full speed.
07:12Yeah.
07:13Right.
07:13So you can tell by watching at a Hurricanes practice, like what's happening, who can play, who can't like you
07:22can tell at a Dolphins practice.
07:25Everything seems like it's half speed all the time.
07:27So it's like that.
07:28And I don't and I've the I've never seen another NFL team practice outside of the Dolphins.
07:35So I don't know how that compares, but I imagine like a Chiefs practice, a Bills practice probably looks a
07:41little better.
07:42Yeah.
07:43And I think it got I mean, it definitely I don't think it got better with with Jeff Halfley.
07:49Like it's not as bad as it was.
07:51I mean, it was with Mike.
07:52The practices were weird, man.
07:54Yeah.
07:55If you ever saw one of those practices, if you ever went out there like they would come out and
07:59they'd stretch and it would be just a lot of, you know,
08:02run around and shorts and half speed stuff.
08:05And at least it's a little better now with with Jeff Halfley.
08:09But like, I think that's Don, I'll be honest.
08:10I'm guessing that's how the NFL is these days with, you know, they just they don't they don't go hard
08:17like the college teams do in in practice.
08:21And so it's it's definitely, you know, I don't know if that's a good thing or a bad thing, by
08:25the way, but it's tougher for us to evaluate.
08:28And all you can do is, you know, I watch Malik throw against no pass rush and all that good
08:32stuff.
08:32And, you know, you obviously can't touch a quarterback out there even when there is one.
08:36And, you know, you saw a lot of good physical stuff from him, a lot of good tools.
08:40But it it just does not translate it.
08:43So, yes, there is a CBA, you morons, seven, eight.
08:46Yes, I know.
08:47I realize that's that's what causes those.
08:50It's true.
08:51But I mean, you know, there are also a lot of different regulations, you know, for those who choose to
08:56follow them that come from the NCAA.
08:58But they're pretty teams are usually good, pretty good at following like the practice guidelines in college football.
09:07But, you know, certain programs and a lot of it comes from the Saban coaching tree, because I remember Carson
09:12Beck telling me last year that Miami practices are structured pretty similarly to what he had at Georgia.
09:20Because, you know, Kirby, Smart, Mario, Cristobal are both from the Saban tree.
09:24And I think a lot of people kind of copy that format for practice.
09:28So it's like you kind of I think and I think you should be doing this in the NFL as
09:32well.
09:33Like you have to kind of push yourselves right to the edge of what's allowed.
09:37Like you can't be outright breaking the rules, but you need to the maximum physicality you're allowed to do, the
09:44maximum number of practice minutes you're allowed to do.
09:47If you want to be great, you have to do that.
09:49Like you have to be doing the max.
09:52Well, the hurricane is getting set for for FSU.
09:54The Dolphins on their bye.
09:56We do have a bunch of text coming in that I would certainly like to to get to here.
10:00Dono 786 here says you guys brought in Tannehill to a now Malik.
10:05Please take that as a sign.
10:07You guys have no clue.
10:08I don't know who he's talking about.
10:09He's talking about you.
10:10Was that your fault?
10:11Was that Hollywood who drafted and brought in those quarterbacks?
10:14I'll take the blame for that one.
10:15Dono, you don't have to shoulder the blame for that one.
10:17I'll take the heat for for Tannehill.
10:20I definitely will take the heat.
10:21That was that was my selection in the show.
10:24When was Tannehill drafted?
10:25That's got to be 2012 years ago now.
10:28Yeah.
10:2814.
10:29Yeah.
10:30Yeah.
10:30I'll take the blame for that one.
10:32All right, Dono.
10:32We're going to get to Chris Perkins.
10:34Maybe he'll take the blame for for some of this stuff as well.
10:37Perk's a good dude, though.
10:38You're a very nice guy.
10:39We don't want to be too too rough with Perk this morning.
10:42He'll stop by.
