Congress and opposition leaders held a protest march in Delhi, mobilising large crowds on the streets of the national capital. Rahul Gandhi was unable to reach the Supreme Court personally due to the gathering. The opposition subsequently filed a petition through the Registrar General instead of meeting the Chief Justice of India directly. The petition names the Election Commission, the Chief Election Commissioner, and two Election Commissioners as respondents and is scheduled for a hearing in the top court.

00:00A symbolic stir where the Congress leaders, the opposition leaders have shown off their numbers saying,
00:04look, this is the might, this is the support that we have on the ground on the streets of the
00:08national capital.
00:09Shreya Chatterjee is also live with us on this broadcast.
00:12Shreya, the original plan was that Rahul Gandhi would attempt to meet the CGI,
00:16that he would attempt to enter the Supreme Court.
00:18But because of the sheer crowds that have gathered in the streets of Delhi this evening as a part of
00:23this agitation,
00:23he simply couldn't make it in time.
00:25So the petition has been filed, just not personally by Rahul Gandhi.
00:29And so the demand itself of the opposition MP saying, we want to meet the CGI, that no longer stands.
00:41Well, absolutely.
00:42You know, they tried to go to the Supreme Court.
00:45They tried to reach the doors of the CGI.
00:48The CGI obviously clearly said that it is not something which is fit right now.
00:52The primary reason is because there have been multiple petitions of the SIR
00:56that has already been moving in the Supreme Court.
01:00And that's why he said that if you want to meet or if you want to come to the court,
01:03come by the route of the petition.
01:05So that's what they did.
01:06They filed a petition by the Registrar General today.
01:10And this is the road, Akshika, that they were trying to use to march forward to the Supreme Court.
01:15But here is where they were stopped.
01:17And finally, after a long hour of tussle between the police and the protesters,
01:22finally the roads have been cleared.
01:23And they've agreed to move back.
01:25But it was a pretty chaotic situation over here.
01:27Because huge numbers of crowd actually turned up at this very point.
01:31They didn't quite go till the Supreme Court.
01:33But the kind of visuals that we saw, the kind of mobilization that we saw,
01:38that kind of looks like a success for this India Bloc protest march that was called today.
01:44It looks like things are now calming down in Delhi.
01:47You know, there's been no clash, fortunately.
01:49No sort of ugly showdown between the cops and the protesters.
01:54None of that that really played out.
01:55Because the cops seem to have allowed all of the opposition MPs to continue with their dharna
02:01to walk right up till a certain barricaded spot.
02:04The opposition too has largely cooperated with the police,
02:07stopping and turning off just before the barricaded spot,
02:10making it very clear that with the petition being filed now before the Supreme Court,
02:14which I will remind you once again, will be heard tomorrow in the top court,
02:18they feel that it's mission accomplished for the day.
02:21Now, what will tomorrow bring a new form of protest?
02:24Or is the focus spotlight going to completely be on the Supreme Court?
02:27Nobody really knows, because that's how Rahul Gandhi has kind of been playing it,
02:31where every single day he's been changing up strategy,
02:33he's been whipping up a new game of how to really take on the CEC,
02:37how to target the Election Commission.
02:39Now, this petition, remember, the respondents in the case have been named
02:42as the Election Commission, the CEC, as well as the two ECs in the case.
02:47So that will come up for hearing tomorrow.
02:49It will be interesting to see what really comes out as a result of that particular hearing,
02:54but I will highlight once again that this isn't the first petition
02:57that's been filed in this matter in the top court.
