00:02Parts of India's capital, New Delhi, remained under tight security for a second consecutive
00:08day on Sunday, as the cockroach Janta party pressed ahead with protests demanding the
00:13resignation of the country's chief election commissioner over a controversial revision
00:18of voter lists.
00:20Thousands of protesters were detained on Saturday, according to media reports, including party
00:25founder Abhijit Dipke, and fellow leaders Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka.
00:31Most protesters were released on Saturday evening, while a court ordered the release of the three
00:36party leaders on Sunday after they appeared before a magistrate.
00:41The party has vowed to continue its demonstrations, while opposition parties, led by the Indian
00:46National Congress, plan to resume protests on Monday.
00:50The unrest was triggered by a newspaper investigation in late September, alleging that chief of
00:55election commissioner Gyanesh Kumar had ignored concerns raised by two election officials
01:01over changes that resulted in more than 130 million names being removed from voter lists.
01:08The election commission has denied the allegations, saying its decisions were unanimous and that
01:14differing views were part of the decision-making process.
01:17The demand for Kumar's resignation comes ahead of key state elections, including in Uttar Pradesh,
01:23India's most populous state, raising the political stakes for Prime Minister Narendra Modi's ruling
01:29party and its opponents.
