00:01Repairs to one of Leeds City Centre's oldest streets are finally set to begin almost three
00:05years after a building partially collapsed. The 18th century building on Lower Kirkgate caved in
00:11in April 2024, forcing the road to close to traffic. Now Leeds City Council has awarded
00:18a contract to Gio Halton & Sons, with work schedule to start on the 19th of October
00:23and finish by the 22nd of March next year. The 20-week scheme will stabilise the privately-owned
00:29buildings and reduce the risk of further collapse. Costs have risen by more than a quarter of a
00:36million pounds from the initial estimate, with the council hoping to recover the money from the owner.
