Plans for new measures to make some of the busiest areas of Leeds city centre safer for pedestrians and shoppers will move to the next stage following overwhelming public support. Consultation on the Briggate Action Plan asked the public for their views on proposals aimed at tackling a number of concerns they had raised, including the estimated 1,100 bikes travelling up and down Briggate each day.

00:00More than 2,100 people took part in the Brigitte Action Plan consultation,
00:06which asked if there should be a requirement to walk with, rather than ride bikes and e-bikes,
00:11within the city centre's pedestrianised shopping area during pedestrianised hours.
00:1687% of people were in favour.
00:19It also asked about an extension to pedestrianised hours, making them 10am to 8pm, with 84% in favour.
00:2669% of people also want to see a restriction on peddlers or street sellers on Brigitte.
00:32New legislation may now be implemented in the next 12 months.
00:35Here's some of your Brigitte reflections.
00:38Living around the corner has made me really aware of how many bikes come up and down the street.
00:43And some days it really is a problem, because they come out and they're not looking at where they're driving.
00:49But I'm also aware of how many restaurants are around this area and how hilly it can be.
00:55So I can see why there are so many bikes.
00:58But maybe if the proposed Action Plan is to have them all roll in them, I assume, right?
01:03So I could see why that could be a good idea and probably would work for the best.
01:07Well, I did nearly get run over by one.
01:10But you just don't hear them coming, do you?
01:15But in reality, I mean, it's the modern world, isn't it?
01:19So let them get on with it.
01:21There's too much foot traffic going down Brigitte.
01:24And there's been enough times one of the Uber driver, cyclists or whichever delivery company they work for,
01:31kind of near enough knocking everyone down and they just huddle around.
01:35So absolutely, I think that's a great thing to do.
01:38I think I'm a very much big believer of pedestrianised streets like that in general, like Brigitte.
01:44And I do think that having bikes going fast kind of does reduce how friendly it feels to pedestrians.
01:51Normally, I'm quite sympathetic to bikes.
01:53But I do think that Brigitte is very wide, so it's maybe not too bad of a problem right now.
01:59But I think generally it makes sense as a precaution.
02:02I think Brigitte's changed so much.
02:04I'm born and bred in Leeds.
02:06I think we do now have a lovely pedestrian area.
02:08But the cyclists and the Uber bikes, things, you know, to me, they're two different things.
02:13And I think that they shouldn't really be on here.
02:15It's a pedestrianised area for walking.
02:18As for stands, I think that it would be good to have times.
02:21If people knew that on these days or this point in the weekend, there's going to be something, that would
02:25be fab.
02:26But maybe not all the time.
02:27Have free zones for people to come and enjoy it as families and prams.
02:30As for the sellers, I think sweet corn and stuff or roast chestnuts you see at Christmastime, they're kind of
02:37fine.
02:38They're kind of gaff knickknacks are not for me.
02:41But maybe if that's, I don't know who that interests.
02:44I can understand wanting to get sweet corn.
02:45I can't really understand as much wanting to get lights or toys or whatever.
02:52Yeah, I think there's a need to be kind of a cap on how many.
02:56So I have found recently that there does seem to be quite a lot of them.
