00:00This is Rachel. They're all running together here in the Pacific, but Hurricane Rachel, a powerful storm.
00:04It's been holding steady as a Category 1 for much the past few days, for at least most of the
00:09time.
00:09Also, a small chance of development here farther south of Mexico.
00:13And, you know, we highlighted NOLO on the map yesterday, which is a typhoon.
00:18Now it's just so far out there, it's off the Earth, at least off the curved nature of this sphere
00:24map here.
00:25If we were doing some kind of a, you know, a Mercator projection, you'd still see it out there.
00:30But we've got the three-dimensional view of the globe here.
00:32So it's so far off to the west, it's beyond the horizon.
00:35Here we are with Hurricane Rachel.
00:37Again, we're dealing with this moving west now at 8 miles per hour.
00:40So it's going to continue to move in that fashion.
00:42Then it will apply the brakes.
00:44Look at this. We're still moving west.
00:45Category 1 hurricane into the night.
00:47And then it basically just stalls, and the steering flow is lost.
00:51So there's nothing to push it along.
00:53And it stagnates for a short time.
00:55It'll lose a little bit of wind energy here, sitting over some cooler water that it, you know,
00:59as a top layer gets swept aside.
01:01Storms sit for too long.
01:03They tend to weaken a little bit because the water underneath them begins to cool just a bit.
01:07And then a new trough is going to end the heat wave in California.
01:11It's going to bring snow to the northern Rockies.
01:13And it's also, number three, going to scoop up Rachel and shove it east.
01:17So we're going to see this become a tropical rainstorm, lose its wind energy.
01:21But it will be making, again, kind of an unofficial rainstorm landfall in northwestern Mexico,
01:28the Baja California Peninsula, and bring some heavy rain into the desert southwest.
01:31Hey, we've been here before, haven't we?
01:33We've had several flash flood events in the desert southwest because of tropical systems.
01:37And we're going to be facing another one.
01:39Now, we are dealing with, again, a nasty setup here.
01:43Again, we've had other systems here making landfall down into western parts of Mexico.
01:48And a new tropical rainstorm has formed south of Mexico.
01:53So we've got two separate systems.
01:54And the new rainstorm that has yet to get named is going to ramp up severely.
01:58So I know it may seem funny to have the wind of 120 to 140 miles per hour without an
02:03official name yet.
02:04But we're confident in more trouble for this next storm system that is already a rainstorm.
02:10It's going to be ramping up and moving into western Mexico.
02:13This is separate from that low risk of development on the horizon.
02:16So Guadalajara, 8 to 12 inches of rain.
02:20And that's happening around the same time we get into some heavy rain into parts of the desert southwest.
02:25So, again, we have our first landfall from Rachel.
02:27Rachel then sends the worst impacts into the northwest part of Mexico.
02:31We also have 40 to 60 mile per hour gusts.
02:34And while that second storm yet to be named hits western Mexico, Rachel is going to be raining out.
02:40No longer an official tropical system at this point.
02:43But more heavy rains coming to the southwest.
02:45Very active time in Mexico and the southwest.
