00:15what's up everybody welcome back to another edition of new york got game dexter henry here
00:20day two of training camp for the knicks is over and my guy here to your right is with me
00:25jared schwartz does a great job covering the knicks for us here at the new york post despite being an
00:30arsenal fan jared how you doing man good dexter how are you we are a couple days into to the
00:37repeat
00:37attempt so we're starting to get going here yeah yeah we are so day two there's still some
00:43interesting things to talk about we saw a media day you and i were there we heard from josh hart
00:48we heard from carl anthony towns about their potential contract extensions and then today
00:53deuce mcbride uh spoke about that what did you hear from him and what were your takeaways
00:58when you heard deuce mcbride talk to the media for the first time this year yeah obviously dexter
01:03on monday when we were all there kind of the theme of the day was carl anthony towns and josh
01:08hart and
01:08their uncertain uh situations and some of that uncertainty likely trickling into the season
01:14both of those guys were pretty open about wanting a new deal um not wanting it to trickle into the
01:21season even though that's likely and sort of talking about the comfort comfortability um of
01:26not having that certainty about their future and what that could do to a locker room and their own
01:30psyche sort of miles mcbride was a little more um not as open about that you know he was more
01:36um
01:37towing the company line and saying that he wants to be a nick uh he likes being a nick um
01:42and he has
01:43faith in in his representation and his agents getting a deal done um when we asked him about
01:49it how he's handling the the uncertainty and and the uncomfortability he kind of just said
01:54you know you go into every camp needing to prove something and needing to you know prove yourself
01:59whether it's a big contract whether it's a bigger role whether it's your place in the team um so he's
02:06kind of looking at it that way the one area where he was really good was talking about playing
02:11through an injury last year and that ties into all of this because he feels like he sacrificed for
02:16the team he feels like he sacrificed his body and playing through pain and playing through injury
02:20and he should be rewarded with that with a new contract and if you remember last year he was
02:26awesome for most of the year um had the sports hernia had the sports hernia surgery missed you know
02:33pretty much the rest of the regular season came back for just the last couple of regular season games
02:37and then went into the playoffs and didn't have a great postseason struggled a little bit wasn't
02:42as efficient of a shooter um you could see he didn't move as well and you know he's talked about
02:47how limiting it is it you feel it in almost every movement whether you're reaching for the remote or
02:52reaching for a loose ball it's right in the middle of your body and it's it's painful and he said
02:57now
02:57that he's healthy now that he feels good again it's crazy to look back at how much he was injured
03:03during the playoffs you know it's that's what he said and that's notable because he's a guy who is
03:07trying to prove that he was more the regular season version of himself than the playoff version of
03:11himself and that he did put his body on the line he sacrificed his body and now we have the
03:17healthy
03:17version of him um but he also you know probably wants to be paid like the healthy version of himself
03:23yeah i'm sure he does and that's the interesting thing for the knicks here and for
03:27deuce mcbride too because if he's healthy and then we all know this from covering sports motivation
03:31can be huge for players right especially in a contract year but as i'm sure deuce knows as well
03:38too and his agent knows he is probably right now the knicks most tradable asset so do you look at
03:45this jared in the same way we might look at josh hart and carlty towns where you wonder because of
03:51all
03:51of that he's got the motivation but still is one of the knicks most tradable assets especially if they
03:55want to upgrade another area that the whole contract situation with him it could affect him that is
04:01possible that it could affect him right now like you said he is definitely the best asset that they
04:07have that is tradable um he's an expiring contract so his deal is done after this year and that's the
04:13only that's a somewhat of a difference between cad and josh hart because cat if he opts in can't be
04:18back next year josh hart is back next year um deuce is an expiring contract and with the edict under
04:25james don't to stay under the second apron they really probably can't give him a big contract this summer
04:29and someone probably will someone probably will see him as a starter type player who is worth 14
04:3615 million a year perhaps maybe more maybe a little less but starter money not seventh man or sixth man
04:42money and the knicks this front office if if you've noticed doesn't like leaving uh letting guys go for
04:49nothing in the offseason mitch was pretty much the one exception because they needed him they needed him
04:55for a championship and i don't think he would have gotten much in a trade but a lot of other
05:00guys if
05:00you were if you know from this front office that in previous years they've traded them before they
05:05reach um be you know before they just leave in free agency for nothing and this is a team that
05:10has
05:11decent depth at guard they both jose alvarado they brought back jose alvarado they brought back
05:15they brought back um jordan clarkson all guys who spend time in and out of the rotation last year
05:22but certainly held their own um they're thinner at big and and they need centers you know they they
05:29right now the only lock for the roster behind carl anthony towns is andre drummond and he's 33 he's
05:36he's pretty much a short thing but it's a little risky to go into a season with only two bigs
05:42carl anthony
05:42town certainly has got into foul trouble a lot you know in in his past so do the knicks want
05:48to
05:48you know look at miles mcbride as someone who can bring in a better backup big and someone who could
05:53actually you know who can be a contributor and bring you know be the level that he is at at
05:58a
05:58different position maybe because he's the one guy that you know can bring back decent talent because
06:04he's young he's cheap and he's actually pretty good yeah and that's the thing and it really comes
06:09like you mentioned to the big situation with them will they want to upgrade the bigs i like looking
06:15at the actions of the team i think the fact that the knicks had tried to sign moose to see
06:18say to
06:19offer sheet earlier this off season told me that they would probably like to upgrade their backup big
06:24situation or at least feel like they have some more depth so i wonder if deuce is somebody that could
06:29be
06:29on the move not saying it would happen now but i wonder if it's something that could happen down the
06:34road as we get closer to the trade deadline now the knicks did they love yeah go ahead and they
06:38and and they love deuce you know it's not like they're looking to trade him he's someone that they
06:43love mike brown loves him his teammates love him he's ultra dependable off the bench he's a great
06:49shooter he's a great defender um he's tough he fits everything that this team is it's just the reality
06:55of the second apron era is that you have to make sacrifices on the roster at times you have to
07:01pick
07:01yeah and you have to prioritize which stars and which starters um come first and right now there's
07:08multiple guys in terms of contract extensions that would come first yep i would think that josh hart
07:13and not in this order necessarily josh hart and carlty towns would be ahead of deuce in that and
07:18because of deuce's contract how trade friendly it is and his production how it's been and i should
07:22give deuce credit he is one of the best knicks development stories probably in the history of
07:27their franchise when you look at his shooting ability and how it's evolved over the last couple
07:31of years and the deal they've had him on so you have to like that there too i did want
07:35to talk
07:35to you about a couple of moves jared um because there were some fans that were asking in the
07:40comments uh for previous shows like what happened to john contrar didn't see him on media day well
07:44the knicks they waived john contrar so he's no longer with the team had some uh personal things going on
07:50that he wasn't able to be with the team they signed they signed jayden atkins to their final two-way
07:54contract um and then they also signed tony bradley uh to uh another a deal um exhibit 10 deal excuse
08:02me
08:02that they signed tony bradley to so what do you make of those moves we know there's some battles
08:07at the end of the roster who's going to get the last couple of spots could it be a big
08:12could it be
08:12a wing or a guard um there's a lot going on what do you make of these two moves that
08:16we saw for
08:16knicks are announced on the second day of training camp yeah mike brown didn't expand too much today on
08:22on the contrar situation they kind of just said that's what they decided to do
08:25and then they wish him and they wish him the best um jaden akins is is notable because that was
08:33the
08:33last two-way deal uh the last two-way slot that they had you know they already have um tyler
08:38nickel
08:38on on a two-way deal um so that was that was the last two-way deal that they had
08:42ready so he's you
08:43know he'll fill that and then kevin mcculler was brought back on the on you know the other two-way
08:48slot from from last year so they have their three two-way guys now in tyler nickel kevin mcculler
08:53and and jaden akins um and they mike brown said he's a high upside guy that they liked early in
08:59the summer so that's you know that's always good he's a michigan state guy i remember um he was there
09:04at practice today so you know we'll see what he brings tony and when when we asked him about that
09:10mike brown actually unprompted kind of bring brought up uh tony bradley who's you know in a training camp
09:15deal it's not guaranteed he'll be in that group of veterans that are competing for that last 14th
09:20roster spot and he talked a lot about bradley um as obviously a big and he said you know it's
09:26obviously a position that we're looking at it's a position that we need and that goes back to the
09:32miles mcbride situation where maybe they want to upgrade it at backup big and he talked a lot about
09:38that when a guy hurts you you kind of remember it then you want to bring him in and and
09:43and bradley
09:43was part of that pacers team uh two years ago that eliminated the knicks in in the eastern
09:48conference finals and that was before mike brown's time but i guess enough people in that room remember
09:52bradley as part of that team um he's a veteran he's big he's certainly experienced um mike brown
10:00had some pretty good things to say about him and and now that that competition has shifted a little
10:05bit you know without conchar now it's um wiseman um drew eubanks and and tony bradley as the big
10:14sort of in the veteran and then you have bruce brown and akbaji as as like sort of like the
10:18wings
10:18in that in that competition and we'll see you know you know conventional thinking thinks they'll take a
10:24big because they need us the big they need a center they'll take a center um but you know bruce
10:28brown
10:28is probably the best player of that group but it's a position that they that they kind of have decent
10:33depth at you know a guard who can kind of play bigger than he is rebounds well plays good defense
10:39and is shoots well enough from three um conventional thinking would would make you think they take a big
10:44but it probably also depends a little bit on how andre drummond looks in camp they probably want to
10:49see how he looks if he can be a 25 minute a night backup for carl anthony towns if they
10:54feel comfortable
10:55with that and want to take a bruce brown and sort of kick the the third string center situation down
11:00the line a little bit and go into the season with just uh carl anthony towns and drummond and
11:06if a need arises then bring someone in and sort of play it by ear of those three centers i'm
11:11curious
11:11from you you talked about wiseman you talked about drew use eubanks and tony bradley now if the knicks
11:17were to go with a third center do you think any of them who do you think is most likely
11:22to maybe
11:22landed is it wiseman because of his upside or could it be someone like tony bradley because of the
11:26experience that he's had in the knicks no firsthand how he hurt them in the playoffs a couple years ago
11:30yeah that's the that's the two sides of the pendulum right um wiseman is definitely the most
11:34like intriguing because he was very very high draft pick he was someone with a lot of potential and
11:41who's someone whose career has really been derailed by injuries we haven't really seen him just
11:45get a full leash and play very much um mike brown knows him from his warriors days when he was
11:50an
11:50assistant with the warriors um he said they didn't keep up that much in in the years past but
11:55he's obviously the most intriguing and maybe the highest upside if he's finally healthy and he's
12:02finally ready to contribute and finally ready to kind of present his best self and like you said
12:07eubanks and bradley are way more like known quantities steady veteran you kind of know what
12:13you're getting out of them they've been the same player for for their whole career um they're not
12:17going to blow you away you're you're you're you really kind of know what you're going to get
12:20so i think a big part of that is how healthy wiseman looks you know let's see let's talk
12:25the end of training camp is he practicing every day um is he limited at all is he does he
12:31have
12:31any set you know any recurring in you know any old injuries coming back um so that that obviously
12:37they want to see how healthy and good honestly wiseman looks um but yeah that's the two sides of the
12:44pendulum right it's it's the young sort of mystery of wiseman or like the less exciting but maybe more
12:51steady veteran option yeah that's going to be intriguing to see i'm intrigued to see how
12:55wiseman looks when we get to the preseason game starting on monday one other player that talked
13:00to the media on day two was landry shamit who returned to the knicks it was different for him
13:05the last couple of years he signed non-guaranteed deals and i meant to say earlier i had misspoke
13:11about tony bradley it was exhibit nine deal non-guaranteed deal now in exhibit 10 but
13:16shamit gets had non-guaranteed deals the last couple of years now has got himself a longer-term
13:21contracts probably you could argue just on paper one of the best value signings of the offseason
13:26in leon rose and company bringing him back what did you hear from shamit today about returning to
13:32new york he seemed like a place he wanted to be back here in the orange and blue what did
13:36he have
13:37to say today to the media yeah he was really good about that and like you said the last two
13:42years he
13:43was here on non-guaranteed deals at this point the last two years he did not know if he was
13:47going to
13:48be on the roster and honestly at this point last year he was not expected to be on the roster
13:53you
13:53know malcolm brogdon most people thought was that was good was ahead of him for that last roster
13:58spot and it really wasn't until he retired right before the season started that shamit took his spot
14:03and got that last roster spot this time around it's it's crazy nicks he's he's like a cult hero with
14:10nicks fans you know for how well he shot in the playoffs especially that cleveland series
14:16and you know the way he stepped in when he was out of the rotation for a little bit and
14:19step back in
14:20and he was really good in talking about just how much that means to him and how much it helps
14:27now
14:27knowing that his spot is solidified for also that obviously he's paid and he has you know much more
14:33money coming to him this year and he said you know i'm proud of myself um it's it's a great
14:38feeling
14:39it's great a feeling to be appreciated to know that you're valued um to know that you're wanted
14:45back to know that you're you know important piece of what this team is building he obviously loves new
14:49york his fiancee loves new york um they they can stay here now and he he was really appreciative that
14:56his career was sort of in in the crossroads the last couple years now he's a key bench piece that
15:02fans
15:02love that mike brown loves that his teammates love um and that is really important to this team you
15:08know we saw last year the way mike brown works you could go a couple weeks out of the rotation
15:15then all of a sudden you're playing 35 minutes you know as i mentioned before like alvarado
15:22shamit and clarkson all had points in the year where they were firmly in the rotation and firmly out of
15:27the rotation you're not getting any minutes and shamit talked about that group because all three of
15:31those guys came back all three of those guys were free agents and had the opportunity to go somewhere
15:35else where maybe they had more guaranteed playing time and all three wanted to be back and shamit said
15:43that group is great and he's never been around a group like that of backup guards where there's no
15:49ego and no ulterior motives where every guy is pulling for the other whether you know if alvarado
15:55takes five of my minutes so be it if if clarkson is now playing and i need to take a
16:00step back great i'm
16:02all for it and all of a sudden one of those guys comes out of the rotation and i'm stepping
16:07up i'm
16:08ready for it and he really talked about that he's never in his career um been around a group that's
16:13that selfless and that egoless and that really you know says a lot about this team and why all three
16:18wanted to come back yeah it's very interesting with shamit because i'm listening to what you're
16:23talking about his comments jared and you hear a lot of gratitude uh for him and in his journey where
16:28he's been in the last couple of years and you know you're always happy for a guy like that getting
16:32a
16:32long-term deal but then i think the other part of it is the last part of what you said
16:35the
16:35togetherness you're hearing from that bench unit from those guys and maybe that's one of the things
16:40that really carries over for this next team is they try to defend their title and we'll see because
16:44they're going to have some adversity and we will see how that all plays out but having that
16:47continuity and togetherness on the bench that can help so some interesting stuff only two days in
16:54to the start of the title defense for the new york hit knicks our own jared schwartz at training
17:00camp will be at training camp with the knicks through the duration and through the preseason
17:04jared appreciate you joining me on new york got game i'm sure we'll have a lot more to talk about
17:09soon and a lot more things to keep our eye on in training camp of course anytime we're just getting
17:14started we are just getting started we'll catch you next time everybody another edition of new york got game
17:21and thanks for watching new york got game boom shakalaka
