Joe DiBiase is joined by Buffalo Bills offensive lineman Austin Corbett for his weekly segment with The Jeremy and Joe Show. The guys discuss the sloppy game from the Bills offense, holding calls in the NFL, and more!
Transcript
00:00We'll take you the rest of the way.
00:01We now go to the Wester hotline and bring on Austin Corbett
00:06as the Bills will play the Patriots coming up after beating the Chargers.
00:10Austin, thanks for joining once again.
00:13And, hey, hockey season two coming up.
00:15I don't know if you're into it at all,
00:17but that's a couple games before you guys play on Sunday.
00:20It's almost next to Wings, I feel like, around here.
00:22It's like rite of passage.
00:23It's Wings and hockey.
00:25Oh, yeah, no big fan of hockey.
00:27So I had no problem there.
00:28I was able to, you know, once I signed over the offseason,
00:32was able to get my hands on a handful of Sabres tickets for the playoffs
00:36and what an environment that was, let me tell you.
00:39Okay, so that's well before you're even going to play a game for the team.
00:42You already were, like, ready to go on the playoffs?
00:45Oh, absolutely.
00:46You know, you can dial in.
00:48Yeah, I'll throw it out there.
00:49Obviously, he spent a bunch of time in Carolina.
00:51Yeah.
00:51My son did bring his Burk Haines jersey up.
00:54So, you know, he dialed in, but, you know, he's six.
00:57You can't be mad at him.
00:57But, you know, that's where his roots were laid.
00:59Yeah, yeah, that makes sense.
01:01Good time for him, too, winning.
01:03I mean, they played tonight, winning the cup.
01:06So before we get to some other things that happened in the game,
01:09Austin, with you, we had Deion Dawkins on the station yesterday.
01:13And I know this had happened to him before, I think maybe last year,
01:17multiple times, where maybe this is different for a tackle.
01:20Maybe you've done this, too, where you chop the arms of the defensive lineman,
01:26and it looks like holding to the ref.
01:28And it feels like every time it happens, Deion gets, you know,
01:31there might be nothing more annoying to him that's happening on the field.
01:36Yeah, 100%.
01:36And I think every offense lineman at some point, if you play along this league
01:43and you get called for it, I've been called for it, and it's crazy.
01:47And it's – we talk to the refs, you know, they come out in the training camp,
01:50they're a part of practices, we talk to them.
01:54Each different group of refs we get, we never really get the same answer about it.
01:57And it's, you know, just part of it, and you've got to – I don't know.
02:03Yeah.
02:03How often would you say it even happens, that, like, if you're in a pass block set,
02:09that it actually – that ends up happening?
02:11Like, is it even once per game, is it less than that?
02:14No, there's definitely a handful of games.
02:16You sit around the league, it happens every single week.
02:19And it's – why it gets called, why it doesn't, it's dumbfounding for sure.
02:25And we don't know, and it – like, struggling for words,
02:30because it truly just – it's an odd one.
02:33Right, there's no explanation for it.
02:34So, the game on Sunday, you guys get the win, and it's 3-0.
02:39I wonder, you know, what the mood has been like around the team.
02:42This team has such a high level of expectation.
02:46And also Joe Brady's role in – now with the head coach –
02:50like, some balance between – I think you don't want to be too down after a win,
02:54but also when the game goes the way it goes like that.
02:57Maybe not treating it like you would any other victory Monday.
03:01Yeah, I think, you know, as Joe's said multiple times,
03:04and, you know, just in standard across the NFL is you never apologize for a win.
03:09And it is hard to win in the National Football League.
03:11And you have to accept that first and foremost.
03:15And then you've got to be able to go and learn from it.
03:17And it's – all the statistics have been thrown out there of, you know,
03:22five turnovers, you know, not scoring, and all the other, you know, facets of that.
03:29And for us to still come out on top is just like, all right, like, let's take a breath.
03:33It's not up to our standard.
03:34We've got to be able to reset and, you know, focus on those little details.
03:38This is not a standard outcome.
03:41And so, being able to do that, and that's exactly what Joe said yesterday.
03:44And the guys are just in this locker room, and they've been around so much.
03:48They've won so many games.
03:49They understand that.
03:50And, you know, it's just, you know, collect our thoughts, you know, today
03:54and get right back to work tomorrow.
03:55Yeah.
03:55Do you think that can be the mark of a great team, though?
03:58Like you said, it's happened so infrequently in the NFL that there's not a lot of precedent for it.
04:04But when you do have a game that is that sloppy and still find a way to win it,
04:11I'm not sure if this, you know, would be in the immediate moments after the game.
04:14But that's how I've viewed it is, like, this team's not going to turn the ball over that much,
04:20hopefully, in many other games this season.
04:22That coming away with a win out of it, like, there's not many teams in the league
04:26that I would imagine could do that.
04:29No, for sure.
04:30And I've been on plenty of teams where if that happens, it's, you know,
04:34it's a complete deflation on the sideline.
04:36Just a complete, just, yep, well, we'll get to next week.
04:38And it's just that, you know, zero energy, no juice on the sidelines.
04:44And we learned a lot about this team.
04:46That's not what happened.
04:47We stayed together.
04:49You know, every time a turnover happened, defense came right up over.
04:52And they're like, hey, we got you.
04:53And sure enough, they did.
04:54And so, you know, early week three, to be able to learn that about a team,
04:58to be able to go through that adversity and be like, all right, like, we're good.
05:01We got each other's back, even, you know, and, you know, offense isn't clicking.
05:05We know defense is going to pick it up.
05:06And, you know, same things.
05:09The special teams is going to be right there, pulling it all together
05:11to make it that complete complimentary team.
05:14And so, to be able to learn that week three in the season, be like, all right,
05:17that's a big confidence.
05:17Let's get on a roll and just keep going.
05:20Yeah, take Austin Corbett with us on the Western Hotline.
05:22Take us to the sidelines, like, as that first half is playing out, like you mentioned,
05:26like not getting deflated.
05:28It's fumble on the first play.
05:30It's three turnovers on the first four drives of the game.
05:34Was it harder and harder to not kind of sink after each one of those?
05:40And then also, the two drives before the half, I wonder, like, going into the locker room,
05:44how big for player psyche that might have been to be tied going into the, you know,
05:50obviously going into halftime.
05:51Yeah, obviously, fumble on the first play of the game is never good.
05:56But, you know, sidelines, it's like, all right, it's no different than, you know,
05:59let's just kick it off to them.
06:00We're fine.
06:01We'll go get on a roll.
06:02You know, we're just starting this game from here.
06:04No big deal.
06:05And then you got a couple more.
06:06It's like, all right, these are dumb turnovers, too.
06:10Like, we're fine.
06:11Like, let's fix it.
06:11It's like, okay, take a breath.
06:14Okay, we're done.
06:15Like, we got to be done at some point.
06:17Put a foot down and do it.
06:18And I think the biggest one there was defense, you know,
06:21just blowing up, forcing field goals, but then also forcing the missed field goal,
06:25right?
06:26Like, they're putting pressure on the edge there.
06:28And that's – and Cameron Dicker, that's a really good kicker.
06:30And so to be able to force the edge and to get that missed where we're able to
06:33keep it, you know, within that one score and tied up at half, it's like, all right,
06:37like, it's a tie ball game.
06:39We've played awful.
06:40We've done awful.
06:41Defenses keep this up.
06:42So let's go do our part.
06:44And so that was big, like you said, at halftime to be able to do that and get
06:48that job done.
06:49Awesome.
06:50Corbett with us on the Western Hotline.
06:51Any – now that we head towards New England, any extra motivation for the way the
06:56seasons have gone so far or just in general a divisional matchup where – I mean,
07:01I know it's early in the season, but the opportunity to go up three games on the
07:05team that took the division crown from the Bills last year.
07:09Yeah, any time you play a division game is huge, right?
07:11Like, that's number one goal is always win your division first.
07:14And so to be able to get in here and ultimately just happens to be a division
07:21game, but to be able to reset and just kind of get back onto our standard
07:25operations and our, you know, level of, you know, expectations we have for
07:30ourselves, I think that's kind of the perfect week for that, right, to be able
07:33to really set up and buckle down on the details and do it with a division
07:38opponent where division games are always unique because there's so much history.
07:43There's so much detail that go in when you play a team twice a year and to be
07:47able to look back on the years past and to understand that you've got to set
07:50things up in this game for the second game, whatever that is in the season.
07:54And so there's a whole different pile of details that we need to focus on for
07:58this and a perfect week to do it coming off a little sloppy executing time.
08:04Bills and Patriots this Sunday at 1 o'clock.
08:07Austin Corbett, thank you again, Austin, for joining us.
08:10Enjoy the week.
08:11Enjoy the Sabres, too.
08:12The day before a game, I don't know if you're going, but, you know, I'm sure
08:16there'll be other opportunities.
08:18Yeah, that'll be tough there.
08:19But we'll always be logging in.
08:21It's such a great environment.
08:22Hockey, live hockey, there's nothing like it.
08:24I truly believe it's the best sport to go sit and watch in person.
08:29Yeah.
08:29You're from Detroit?
08:30Detroit?
08:31No, that's classic Wikipedia wrong.
08:33Yeah, okay.
08:37So, didn't grow up with any hockey.
08:39Okay.
08:39You know, kind of adopted the Knights once, you know, they kind of became a team
08:42and then enough time in Carolina.
08:44So, kind of got my West and my East covered now.
08:47And it's been awesome dealing with some hockey with my six-year-old.
08:51He's loving it.
08:52Gotcha.
08:52We'll enjoy it, and we'll talk next week.
08:54Thanks, Austin.
08:55You got it.
08:56Take care.
08:56Austin Corbett on the West, her hotline bills win over the Chargers.
09:01And the line overall did have some moments where the Chargers were getting pressure.
09:08Might have seen like it was happening more often than not because Allen wasn't seeing
09:12him scramble a lot.
09:13We have Mike Florio coming up at 9-15.
09:16I got a quick stat on something that we had a caller calling about a little bit earlier
09:21on, and there is, I think, maybe a false narrative about the Bills that is out there that I think
09:29is disproven by what the other teams in the league do.
09:34I was trying not to fall into like a Bills hole, like nothing else in the league matters.
09:39What's the context of what other teams do?
09:41And because I remember these losses the Bills have had in recent years to teams they should
09:50beat.
09:50I'm at the Miami game last year in Miami against a dead Dolphins team that blew the Bills out.
09:5831-13, they played horrible.
10:01They lose that game.
10:02There's the Jaguars game with Urban Meyer.
10:04I mean, go down the list.
10:06There's caught a bunch of them, but really there aren't that many.
10:11So the Bills, since 2020, when Josh Allen became an elite quarterback, they have lost
10:19eight games to teams that finished that season under .500.
10:24That's it.
10:2649-8.
10:29And I don't know if eight sounds like a lot to you or not as much as you thought.
10:35Maybe it's right where you believe they would be.
10:37Eight losses to teams that had a losing record that season.
10:40So it's a little more than one per year.
10:42But when you look at the other teams in the league, and specifically the conference, they
10:50are more consistently good.
10:52They consistently win the games they should as much or more than anybody else in football.
10:5949-8 against losing record teams in the last six years.
11:03The Chiefs are second at 44-8.
11:06The Ravens are third at 34-8.
11:08So the Bills have the best win percentage against bad teams in a six-year period.
11:16Now, I saw one tweet to this that I think is probably right.
11:21The one thing that would be the reason why they haven't won the one seed is there probably
11:30are years where the Chiefs or the Ravens or there's that year the Titans won the one seed
11:36where they don't lose any games to teams like that.
11:42And then maybe there are other years where they lose three.
11:43Whereas, if the Bills are doing it like once per year, twice per year, then if it's more
11:51consistently spread out, then that game could be the difference.
11:55But, I think in large part is this proves a fatal flaw of theirs that they had maybe with
12:03Sean McDermott that just isn't really true.
12:0649-8.
12:07The best win percentage in football for six years against teams with a losing record.
12:13Against the teams they should beat, they do it as much as anybody else.
12:19So yeah, you play enough of them.
12:21There's going to be one or two in there.
12:23And you'd like to have one season where you have zero and maybe they haven't done that yet.
12:27But, I just think it's overstated.
12:30Because eight losses in six years, again, it's as few as anybody else in the league.
12:37803-0550 is the phone number.
12:39We've got Mike Florio coming up at 915.
12:41Hockey season gets started tonight.
12:44I'll take a quick run through that schedule when we come back.
12:48I did for Locked On Sabres yesterday, Atlantic Division Predictions.
12:51And I had a tougher time doing it than any year I've done that show.
12:55It's really hard.
12:58Get to that when we come back.
12:59Here on Jeremy and Joe, this is WGR.
